Popular software from the 80s/90s that eventually failed?

I know a lot of opensource projects use them, some with a very large and very active user base.

Not only that, but sites like reddit will often have community sponsored channels set up for the particular sub-reddit. IRC is still all over the place.

Winamp really used to kick the llama's ass...

Can't remember the last time I used it.

What's it used for these days? I remember it was a great.. ahum.. resource.. for less than ethical software trading, but assumed torrents and ****** made it irrelevant

It's a collection of communities. It's true that some people used it to trade illegal software, but there's a lot more going on in IRC than just that.

I bet if I just go to the IRC channels I used to hang out in I'll still find some of my friends (or at least their bots) there.

Checked ICQ today and it looks like they did away with numbers, mine was 506***. Had to have the password reset and now use my email address to log in.

Wtf are you serious? I used to be one of those who proudly wore my badge of geekness of having a six digit ICQ number.

Edit: just checked, and while you can use your email address to login, you can still use your ICQ# too.

Novell/Netware yes, people installed netware becaue they were on the "i hate Microsoft bandwagon" god i hated Netware, it was with great joy when i flipped the power switch on my last netware server to OFF permanently .
IPX/SPX that's a protocol not a software
Windows ME was never ever wildly popular.

IIRC some people where selling their low digit ICQ# on eBay. You're right, just signed in with my 6-digit ICQ# and my contact list from the mid '90s are still there. :awe:

Prodigy
Compuserve

Borland anything, as mentioned earlier.

Corel still exists. Don't know how. Everything they have is slow and clunky.

Anyone still remember Stacker? The one that would make your hard drive larger somehow (way back then HDs were pretty expensive). I still remember their ads with a fish and then another much larger fish.

I remember Stacker. Used it on a 100mb drive back in the early 90's

I still use winamp every day, it's my audio player of choice and manages my iPod without being a mangy beast like itunes.

I think you're thinking of usenet, which is also still alive after over 3 decades.
