Ok honestly, if I smelled smoke and my computer was on, I would pull the plug, but that's because I'm an overclocker that knows that if my cooling fails, my system will burn. Now I think that most users will not know to do that, and assume something else is burning.

What happens if I get a continuous stream of popups? CTRL+ALT+DELETE. Do most non tech-saavy people do that? I highly doubt that. I think most people instinctively click on the X. This is ridiculous.

So every time you've been in a highly embarrasing awkward situation you've acted with perfect logic, reason and clarity?

Thats damn ridiculous. In the 9th grade some friends and I were caught surfing rotten.com during our web design class, and the teacher was pretty cool about it and couldnt stop laughing and gasping in disgust along with us at all the things. People seriously need to get their heads out of their asses, less they forget that their own ****** stinks too.

It doesn't matter... the stupid, vague, 19th century law says you get teh felony if you "impair the morals" of a child. Funny that MTV hasn't been charge yet. And I'm surprised some fundamentalist group hasn't charged all those atheists out there with teaching evolution in the school; I'm sure a jury made up of average Joe Americans could be convinced that saying we are descended from monkeys does indeed "impair the morals" of children.

Unbelievable... 40 years for a few pics shown to just a dozen students! PFFTTT, she was better off getting the real thing from the boys and blaming it on being mentally unstable. What the hell were the Jury thinking, this reminds me of 12 Angry Men.

The 40 years is a maximum penalty, all the way down to community service. Though this could be considered a sexual crime, with a minor.

One of the few people with some common sense in this thread. Some of you idiots need to learn to read, especially the OP, who misled anyone who just read the title.

She can recieve UP TO 40 years in prison. Thats because what she accidently did is show 7th graders sexually explicit material. She will probably get a much lighter sentence. The reason that she faces up to 40 years in prison is because shes facting 4 counts, which means that each one probably carries a max of 10 years. Seems fine to me that someone who in another case would be willingly exposing children to sexually explicit material should receive up to 10 years in prison.

surfing porn web sites during school time is worht 40 years in jail? Simply absurd. The USA is perhaps one of the LEAST free countries in the world, it is a country where the moral majority use their political power to destroy the lives of ANYONE WITH A NORMAL SEX DRIVE.

You must not travel much. You have no frame of reference whatsoever.

Obviously the sentence is ridiculous, but it's (1)the absolute maximum (2)a clearly unusual verdict, unlike the thousands of verdicts a day that don't make the news, and (3)being appealed, hopefully with a better lawyer.

The teacher was undoubtedly shocked upon seeing it and probably doesn't have the sort of "turn off the computer so nobody sees the porn" sort of reflexes us guys have.

Haha, yeah, you should volunteer to give that testimony on her behalf! "According to my studies, your average American male, when confronted with an unexpected porn popup, is able to close, hide, or mute it within 4.3 seconds. A female can take up to two full minutes, though with practice, times improve."

This nudity thing is just.. LOL did anyone here suffer mental damage from seeing porn as a child? WTF! How is that even possible? Most children LOOK for porn at every chance they get... *sigh*

Do parents still believe their kids are sexually unaware and know nothing about it? Kids nowadays know more at the age of 10 than their parents knew at 20... Baahh

Never mind the up to 40 years part.

This woman is going to have a felony conviction on her record for life over this. And I'm not sure, but it may qualify for a sex crime and put her on the list.

No matter what her sentence will be, she's hosed for life.

This is very sad. I do a lot of spyware and virus removal and I've seen computers do this to people who have never once intentionally visited a porn site.

Wow. The fact that she is even on trial for this just blows my mind. I think losing her job would even be too harsh a penalty.

If she gets sentenced to ANYTHING for this, I think I might lose any respect for our worthless court system I might have had before.

Considering that there are violent criminals, rapists, and killers who are out free for less than 40 years, this case is a mockery of justice.

Regardless of whether the sentence could be community service and up to 40 years in prison. The mere fact that 40 years is a possible sentence is greatly disproportionate to the offense committed.

MSNBC Article

She will be sentence on the 2 Mars and may face a year to 18 months in jail.
Even if she purposely showed the porno to the kids such a sentence would be way overkill.

How much damage was inflicted by her action? I can't think of any!

While I agree any jailtime would be overkill, please don't ask what damage is inflicted if you don't have young children.
