Poor performance with new 4890?

So I got my new XFX 4890 installed and I booted up windows and installed the 9.11 catalyst drivers. I ran the Windows Experience Index and I got a graphics and gaming graphics score of 6.0! My 8800gt got 6.7! Then I tried playing Fallout 3 and my performance was a little worse than my 8800GT. What is going on?

My system:

C2D e6750 @ 3.2GHz
XFX 4890 1GB (Stock)
G.Skill 4GB DDR2-800
Gigabyte P35-DS3L (PCIe x16 1.0 slot)
Xclio Stablepower 500w PSU (2x 12v rails 18 Amps each)

Run driver cleaner and reinstall the drivers. You should be getting at least 7.4-7.5 with a 4890. I've read enough cases of people going from an Nvidia card to an ATI card and having problems that it seems a bit suspicious.

If cleaning the drivers don't work, it can be that the PSU isn't feeding enough power to your graphics card.

Although it is 2x 12v rails with 18 amps each, the combination of that might be a tad low.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer doesn't include any reference of combined amperage for 12v or max wattage delivered by the 12v rails combined.

EDIT: Actually from this picture XCLIO STABLEPOWER 500W 500W ATX SLI it says max Wattage =500W and the combined 3.3V&+5V= 210W so the 12V should be around 290W which is something like ~24A.

I'm not sure, but 24A seems a bit too low for your card.

Well, I reinstalled all the drivers, but the performance is still the same :(

I made sure the nvidia and ati files were completely gone.

I can play crysis but at 1080p all high, I only get 30fps, which is a little better than my 8800gt, but it isn't 4890-level performance.

I get a 7.6 with my standard Asus 4890.

1. Make sure it is in the PCI 16x slot
2. Reseat the graphics card.

Things for you to do:

- Run another game and see if you get better performance;
- Reinstall Windows;
- Try to to see if you can either borrow a better PSU or use the 4890 on another PC with a beefier PSU.

PSU might be the issue, i was running a AC 550RF when i upgraded from a 4830 to a 4890 in system in sig and it was unstable and crashed alot, upgraded to a more beefy PSU solved all problems.

And that is a 33A PSU.

LOL

The psu is not "weaksauce" It's $100 PSU with a rebate and savings

The OCZ ModxStream Pro 600w also got many good reviews on newegg and by websites.

Plus, to be frank, I was on a strict $200 budget. I would have paid another $60 for a PSU if I absolutely had to, but the OCZ modxstream is a $100 PSU for $30

Well, I overclocked the card a bit and the WEI went from 6.0 to 7.6! I loaded up crysis and my pc shut down :(

I'm pretty sure it's the PSU. I'm looking at this is an upgrade:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341017

OCZ ModXstream 600w $30 after rebate!

That psu has a 500watt 12v rail, it will be fine. 80% efficiency.

Good quality but not the best.
If the 4890 dosent run easily with that psu return it.

To OP: While I think your problem probably is the PSU, since you are in a tight budget, I would try to at least to format drive and re-install windows as this poster is saying.

That OCZ is ~42A and should be more than enough.

Why does everyone think it's a power supply issue? The OP's system has never crashed when his vid card is running under normal condition. His system only crashes when he attempts to load Crysis with an overclocked vid card. But the crash doesn't meant that his power supply is not capable of running the vid card under stock condition.

Furthermore, I have never heard of a case where a stronger power supply would increase framerate. If power supply was the issue, then shouldn't we expect more crashes under normal stock conditions?

Actually, it completely shutdown at stock clocks as well as decreased performance versus my 8800gt.

I was able to play COD4 a little longer than crysis (15min) befor it shutdown as well. Like I unplugged it from the wall.

What shangshang said

+1

Possible configuration issue, not a PSU issue.

For what it's worth, my 4870 512MB at completely stock clocks gets a Windows score of 7.5.

+1 vote for thinking the problem is the power supply. The system hard shutting down is almost always caused by the power supply.

From http://www.vgaforum.com/showthread.php?t=21607 it says a stock 4890 can use 22.5A at load and a 4890 Toxic (this is OC 960 core/1050 memory) 26.6A.

This PSU list http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=205763, unfortunately, doesn't know the amperage of your power supply.

That's frilling wrong. The toxic version only has an 8-pin and a 6-pin which is limited by spec to 12.5a (150w) and 6.25a (75w) respectively. A pci-e can supply 6.25a (75w) as well. There is no way to get to 26.6a (320w). Max supply value is 25a 300w. A 4890 is never going to use that much, maybe near 200w OCCT SC3, 225w overclocked.
