POLL: would you date someone with a physical disability?

Assuming that the person doesn't gripe, complain, and use their disability as an excuse for anything. Picture the type of person you'd be attracted to and then add in a disability - would you still express interest in them or be willing to date them? What about long-term? How severe would the disability have to be before you'd refuse to date them on those grounds?

I wouldn't actively search for someone with a disability. And especially if the disability is congenital I would have reservations before jumping into anything serious.

OTOH, if I was with someone i cared for and then tragedy caused the disability, that wouldn't be grounds for leaving.

I most likely would not date someone in a wheelchair, and it really depends on what kind of disability it was. I was thinking about this a couple days ago, if I were in a wheelchair, I'd be screwed in the relationship department. (not that I'm anywhere in that department anyways... :roll

Really would depend on what it is. Honestly I can say it would be a severe detraction. Although it could happen to anyone I can say that I'd not consider somebody in a wheel chair. This isn't to say that I'd break up a relationship with somebody if it happened after the fact, but to begin one no way. <- hypothetically speaking

I have dated someone with a physical disability (well, kind of - she had a REALLY messed-up back)... it, in itself, didn't bother me. Bothered me that she used it for an excuse for not working, for staying home from school, etc.

However, my current girlfriend doesn't have a physical disability (quite the opposite actually ) and I'm not gonna cheat on her so this question is moot...

to answer your question Hotchic, I wouldn't rule somebody out simply because they had some sort of disability... we all have issues of one sort or another, most of us are just lucky enough that our's are not readily visible.

Like succubiss said, I would have reservations about dating someone with an inherited disability. If the disability was acquired sometime in life, it would depend on the severity. If the person were still able to enjoy life, then I would most likely be able to look past it.

In response to your later question, an acquired disability would be no reason for me to break up with someone.

Just because the disability develops after you start dating doesn't mean it's acquired. It can still be inherited.

well my friend mike who is one of the greatest and sweetest guys i know only has one hand, the other is what we all refer to as "the nub". i know it sounds mean, but thats what he himself calls it and its all in good fun.

i would never not date him because of the nub, infact, i have a little tiny itty bitty crush on him, but we are good friends and hes seeing this super cute girl so im ignoring it.

but i mean, i dont even think of him as "disabled" so i dont even feel like he qualifies as an example for this thread.

in any case, i wouldnt not date someone solely because of a disablility but it also depends on what kinda person they are cuz ive met alotta "disabled" jackasses.

Well kat, I considered use of the word handicapped but it seems to have too much of a stigma.

Gosh......I sure hope so! I AM that someone! At least by "standards" I am.........I qualify for Social Security Disability but turned it down. I have a severely messed up back (2 surgeries and another coming sometime this Spring) but could not see the point of taking the S.S.D. when I am quite capable of running a business from my home and making 8 times what I would've receive from S.S.D.

I don't think most disabilities would prevent me from seeing someone, unless it was quite severe, but then I doubt they would be "out and about" if that were the case!
