Isn't the original point of widescreen so that you could have a wider theater and fit more people in? I doubt it was used for the purpose of having interesting things happen in the margins.

The original purpose of widescreen was to differentiate movies from the TV that was stealing it's crowds.

It also makes sense, since the human eye sees more stuff to the left and the right then it can to the top and bottom. Widescreen is more like the shape of our vision.

I love Widescreen and all..... but one stupid thing about widescreen is the multiple widescreen formats. So even on a Widescreen TV some movies will have black bars... (granted the bars arent as big as they are on a 4x3 TV but still, that sucks IMO) I really wish they would pick one format and have everybody work in that (TV's, movie directors, everybody)

Make sure you get anamorphic widescreen.

so, why are people making a distinction between widescreen and OAR? What's the difference?

Original Aspect Ratio

Films can be
1.33:1 (4:3...the old Academy ratio)
1.66:1 (Truman Show)
1.85:1 (Most movies as well as HDTV...approximates 16:9 - 1.78:1)
2.20:1 (Far and Away)
2.35:1 (Many special effects-laden films or panaromic films)

Those aren't the only ones. It just depends on what the director/producers have in mind for the way the movie should look and feel.

HBO-HD will crop any film down to 1.85:1. Just about as bad as taking 1.85:1 down to a Puke & Slash 4:3 ratio.

"Classic" films don't use the current theatrical aspect ratio (which is an oversimplification, since there are several which fall under the umbrella of "widescreen"). For example, you won't find a widescreen version of The Seven Samurai, since it was actually filmed in (something very close to) a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Im not saying its bad, just that there should be 1 format for everything.... and I have a feeling most people think that if they buy a widescreen that their widescreen movies will fill the screen. Or alteast the good one. Almost all new movies are 2.35:1

Death to widescreen!!! :p Seriousally.... I got about 6 TVs in my house, all 4:3. There is no way in hell I'm replacing them all. The TV in the living room is in an entertainment system that's built into the wall and the space is a square. There is no way to get a widescreen TV in there.

I like widescreen, but only because I have a big tv. If I had like a 30" or so I'd probably just use fullscreen.

But when all those 4:3s wear out what will you replace them with, assuming 16:9 continues to increase in availability and popularity? I have 4:3s too, but I know that when these puppies go their getting replaced with 16:9s.

GAH! Never!!

Even on my old 27" set I'd watch widescreen DVDs. SOOO refreshing to not have to see "This film has been modified to fit your TV". I want to see the whole thing.

I favor anamporhic widescreen. However, I can see how someone with a 27" or smaller TV wouldn't want to view letterboxed 2.35:1 movies on their TV. The detail is so small, it's hard to see. In that case, it's worth losing the stuff on the sides.

Fullscreen has it's place... just not in my collection. :)

If I were to say 'death to" anything, it would be non-anamophic (non-16:9 enhanced) transfers, overly compressed video transfers and edge enhancement.

16:9 movies look very small on my 19 inch in my room... they're a little better on the 32 inch in the living room... but I can't really afford $1000 for a TV at this time... my 32 inch RCA was on sale for $220.

Smaller than 25" TV = Full Screen
Larger than 25" TV = Widescreen

What's with all the animosity???

Just don't buy FS DVDs. How hard is that? There are extremely few DVDs that are not available in widescreen... and most of those were originally that aspect ratio to begin with. My peeve is how many are sh!tty transfers, or non-anamorphic. Now THAT is something to harbor anamosity over IMHO.

Idiot Question - Anamorphic DVD's are the ones that stretch out to fill the whole screen in a 16:9 TV right? Non-anamorphic will still have bars on the top and bottom of a 16:9?
