<< This thing would kickass at college...especially considering most colleges don't allow freshman to have cars. 😛 >>

Hmmmmmm.... what's the number one crime on my college campus? That would be BIKE THEFT. Until someone comes up with a convenient way of locking/storing this 65-pound self-balancing lawnmower, it's going to be impractical.

It'll be fairly useless in cold, heat, or rain, since people prefer the comfort and shelter of their cars. The technology is great, but there are still a lot of questions to be answered.

i only read part of the thread.
anyway, i think it's more practical if it's like a bicycle.
that scooter just looks not something for real life, maybe a movie like pleasanville can have "it".

<< 65-pound self-balancing lawnmower >>

You know....if they mounted a blade on the bottom of this guy, I'd be infinitely more likely to want one. I still don't see the utility of it unless it's VERY inexpensive (at least under $500) but if I could mow the lawn at 12MPH without having to have a big expensive tractor or industrial mower......hmmmmm

Also, someone said you might fall off it doing stupid things like going down stairs, but I thought the thing can handle stairs....One article on Yahoo definitely mentioned that.

I can see the uses for it (mail men, factories, warehouses, etc), and I think it could sell well for that, but I just don't see it being some massive consumer thing. I don't care how revolutionary the motor or the balancing system is, I'm not paying $3000 for a scooter.

Well then don't... bu that's the same thing people were saying when television and personal computers was developed.

I think this will revolutionize the world... it just won't happen in a year. More like 20+. I can definitely see city streets filled with people riding these things. And prices WILL drop.

Anyways, I simply don't see how the average consumer will want to buy this simply coz they don't really need it. Maybe senior citizens and people who need to move around a lot like a mailman will benefit from it, but a healthy person is simply lazy if they need to ride a scooter when they could walk.

What if you had to walk 3-4 miles to work. Driving a car would be kinda useless, since it'll be like a 10 min drive, and you'll have to deal with traffic. Walking is kinda out of the question, since that is a lot of walking. Public transportation? Sure. ANd if i had to choose between all those 3 and segway, i would just Segway.

Yeah, I'm sure these will be well received in the Pacific Northwest and the East Coast during the winter. The device is seasonal in nature, which lessens it's revolutionary nature considerably.

Well, supposedly this thing works just fine in snow... and from the looks of it, it probably would as long as there isn't 2 feet of snow.

No, it's the second stupidest idea in the history of bad ideas. It's the gee-whiz version of this, and you haven't seen them taking the streets of our cities by storm, have you?

Oh, and BTW, the number one stupid idea in the history of bad ideas, will be buying shares of the stock of the company that makes this debacle waiting to happen, particularly right after the IPO.

P.S. That Jeff Bezos thought "Ginger" was a good idea only proves my point.

<< Well, supposedly this thing works just fine in snow... and from the looks of it, it probably would as long as there isn't 2 feet of snow. >>

Yes, it works fine through snow, mud, gravel, etc. But what if it's raining or snowing? You can drive through both of those, but I personally wouldn't want to Segway through the elements, when I could comfortably hop into my sheltered car. Also, if it's very hot or cold, taking a Segway would be less comfortable than a car with a heater or AC.

This invention is pretty stupid. Sure the technology is impressive, but until the technology is used for something with a real purpose it's totally useless.

No consumer wants a damn scooter like this that costs $3K. Maybe mailmen and warehouse people might benefit, but thats about it. I don't care that it only costs me 5 cents a day to get to school with this, and that get there in 20 minutes without polluting the earth. I'd rather get there in 3 minutes at a cost of 1 dollar (if it even costs that) and put a nice dent in the ozone at the same time. Plus I get to sit my lazy ass down in a seat, with heat and my music.

Until they take this device and put a Porsche on top of it, they ain't getting my money.

It's no different than walking through snow or rain. Just like walking, if the weather is good, you're more likely to walk a longer distance... but if the weather is bad, you'll take a car/cab/bus and walk shorter distances. What's to stop you from doing that with this? Most of you guys seem to think it's going to be the ONLY means of transportation in a city. It's not, but i can see certain areas where this would be far superior to a car. I don't know where you live, but downtown in my areas are extremely difficult to manuever around in a car, and even harder to park. I use to live about 3 miles from school, driving was under 5 mins, but walking was about 30mins. Taking a bus was about 20mins as well. That's where this usefulness comes in.

The technology is amazing, the concept is horrible. You know how many accidents would occur? You know how rare it would be for someone to have one, since they will be at least $3,000 (most likely they will be 4k+)? Making them rare and easy to steal if you are riding it and expensive, no one will want one. Sorry I don't see it working out too well. It's like minidisc.

I think that this is a great invention. I used to work downstairs from Deka. I've briefly met Dean before, when I was outside having a smoke, or working on their servers. He seems like a cool guy, and he's smart as hell. This is WAY more than a scooter, maybe if you looked into it some more you'ld understand what's involved with this. You can use it ALL day and barley use any electricity. This device has some incredible science behind it. The gyroscopes are amazing, the software is amazing, and how the hell do they pack 10 processors in it? When I used to work below them, they were developing the "wheelchair", and I think they were drop testing it or something. You'ld be sitting around, and then BAM! Ah, I digress... Anyway, there are alot of implementations with the science behind this device. (Bedsides, I won't worry about falling of, and scraping my knees 😉 )

If it was a little cheaper (~2k), I would consider getting one. I live about 4 miles from work and would consider using this during the spring-summer months for commuting.

With time and tree-hugging legislation in California we will probably get tax breaks too.

I think the technology would be incredibly interesting if applied to a motorcycle-type device, that was heavier, and had better range - like say 30-40 miles.

Do i think it's an impressive technological achievment? Yes. Do i think that it has the potential to change our cities? Yes. Will i ever get one? No. 😀

its cool. Will everybody have one within a year, or even a decade? No, probably not. Espically here in Texas, during the summers and huge spread out cities, it won't be taking off. I think its more of an HDTV type thing - over time, as the price drops and the tech. improves, more and more ppl will get one.

Are you saying that people in Pacific Nortwest and East Coast are so weak/comfort driven that they can't walk during winter (we REALLY need the "rolleyes" smiley!)? Riding this thing is no different from walking, it's just faster. Surely you can be outside for the duration it takes to travel few miles with this thing?

Well i have to say its seasonal too. have you ever been in North Dakota, Montana or Minnesota in winter? dude it gets damn cold up there. do you know what -30 with 20MPH wind feels like? the last thing i want to do is walk in it much less ride a scooter.

The reality of the Ginger is that is a new design on a old product. its not going to go anywhere. no pun intended.

Well, lets see i paid about 1200 for my Specialized Stumpjumper FSR, and well, IMO its just as good as any "Ginger" Sure the ginger might be "effortless" but its not 2000 bucks less effort. THis might be nice on pavement, but i'd like to see it in action at our collage crappy maintained sidewalks and all.

All i will say this, the tech is interesting for use in other applications.
