Poll: who thinks "Ginger" is stupid?

It's to do with convenience. Most people don't need to take a car 1 mile to the store do they? But they do anyway. Sure they should walk, but they don't. Most people are simply too fat and lazy. Now would you prefer they take a car or a scooter? If the scooter is cheaper they may take that instead.

And it was not kamen who was hyping it up - it was everybody else.

<< "Ginger" is nothing but a scooter >>

Yeah, and Michael Schumacher's F2001 is just a horseless carriage!
>>

Well said. Just think of where this could take us.

yes, mary anne was the better looking one 😛

and i don't think the scooter is nice and all.... but the technology behind it is what gets me... very very interesting.

<< I have to agree, Ginger is stupid... Mary Anne was the smart one!

🙂

Nah, Ginger was the smarter one, contrary to popular opinion.

Too bad it's illegal in most of Canada.
Every city I've been to up here, has regulations to keep any motorized scooter-like machine off the sidewalks. Punishable by a fine.
This unique little scooter-like thingie may have it's advantages, I'm sure, but it won't see the sidewalk in any Canadian city. If it does, expect every other manufacturer of anything motorized to get all over the government to change the law. This scooter shouldn't be special.
Also, it's supposed to stop people driving 4000lb vehicles around town in favor of this small little thing. For $2000US?! I don't think so. People will still use bicycles, with unlimited range and health benfits.

Bottom line, I think this "IT" thing is going to be a passing fad. Sure, it's neat, and given the money I'd certainly buy one just to fool around with. But to expect people and cities to adapt lifestyles for this unit, is ridiculous.

Done.

yea this thing is retarded
it'd probably useful in a warehouse or something to increase productivity
but other than that....where the hell am i gonna park this thing and where's the antitheft features?!

<< Most people don't need to take a car 1 mile to the store do they? >>

i take my car so i have some cargo space...but that's just me

i think it looks pretty freaking cool, if only it would be affordable when the consumer version comes out 🙁

More clean transportation is a good thing, and this thing is relatively sidewalk friendly so I'm for it. Unline those suicide scooters, which are hazardous on sidewalks and unfit for bike lanes.

The technology is interesting but they will have to rethink the product. It has huge potential for injury. Also, think the cost of redesigning cities to give these things a safe place to run. Maybe useful for ferrying old folks around the mall. But the efficient motor and balance system could change the way "personal" vehicles are designed. Cool for future motorcycles for example.

<< It has huge potential for injury. >>

Considering the thing won't fall over...how so? Unless you wander into traffic or try going down stairs with it...

Hrm PII systems were a couple thousand not too long ago. Now you can get one for under 100 bucks?
Of course the price will come down once it's sold to consumers.

I said it before, and I said it again, it's cool! It CAN change the way we move from place to place! The reason people are opposed to it is because it's DIFFERENT from what we have got used to, and people are reserved when it comes to new and strange things.

As for the price... How much did cars cost when they were invented? I believe the word "astronomical" is the correct one here. Once mass-production of those things starts (and I hope it does start), the prices will drop accordingly. Over time, as the tech get more refined, the prices will drop again.

Don't just kill this idea, be open-minded! These things could do everything car does in downtowns. And do we REALLY need big cars to move inside cities? No we do not. We could eliminate the vast parking-spaces, we could make streets with fewer lanes (besides, several lanes don't seem to help one bit. Instead of 2-lane parking-lot, you get 4-lane parking-lot. They are packed with cars all the time), we could give PEOPLE more space, instead of giving CARS more space!

<< I think it's an outstanding idea, invention, and feat of engineering. This thing is a technological marvel!
It is the first invention that adapts to the human and doesn't force the human to adapt to it.
>>

Oh give me a break. You can imagine NO other invention at all in the history of the world that was adaptive to humans? What do you use for gloves? Bundles of sticks? What do you buy at the grocery store? Bundles of sticks?

That said, I think the coolest gadget lately is the optical mouse. I did not have to change the way I worked at all, and yet my work got easier.

<< These things could do everything car does in downtowns. And do we REALLY need big cars to move inside cities? No we do not. >>

Yeah, I'm sure these will be well received in the Pacific Northwest and the East Coast during the winter. The device is seasonal in nature, which lessens it's revolutionary nature considerably. Why? Because NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO GET RID OF THEIR CAR. That may be a slight exaggeration, but not much. A revolution would be an absolute car replacement. An innovation is this seasonal gadget that makes some metropolitan areas less crowded in the summer.

Does anyone have any videos of this thing in action? I want to see how loud it is. It would definately be fun to try out.

zippy,

You can still fall off it or run it into something, no?

Anyway, still high on the neato scale.

<< Yeah, I'm sure these will be well received in the Pacific Northwest and the East Coast during the winter. >>

Are you saying that people in Pacific Nortwest and East Coast are so weak/comfort driven that they can't walk during winter (we REALLY need the "rolleyes" smiley!)? Riding this thing is no different from walking, it's just faster. Surely you can be outside for the duration it takes to travel few miles with this thing?

And of course you would still keep your car! This thing is meant to replace car in urban areas! For longer travels, you would still use your car. But the fact is that you do NOT need a car to take you few miles in urban area. The street are already blocked by cars (most of which have one 1 or 2 passengers).

EDIT: This device is built around premise that you don't need car to move in urban areas. That it's more sensible to use devices such as this. It reduces traffic, pollution, energy-consumption, accidents... The reason why people are opposed to it is because it's DIFFERENT from current system. But that does not change the fact that the premise is 100% correct! No matter how you look at it! Our problem is that we have taught ourselves to live with faulty premise (that cars are needed).

the technology behind the scooter is ok, but this actual scooter is the worst thing ever, it just shows how lazy people are, if its supposed to be used for short trips, why not walk, roller blade, bike, whatever
and according to this
yahoo news stuff
a six hour charge for 15 miles, on level ground, not very convenient, and car techonology has dramatically increased over the years, yet the price of cars continue to increase and i'm not just talking about inflation, so i don't think you can really compare this thing to a computer and say its going to drop down to 1000 in a year or whatever, 3000 is probably already a generous decrease, one last thought, i think this technology dies with this scooter, it can never be implemented to a useful car, and since we have hybrids and the Hydrogen powered cars in the near future, all this huge invention can do is power a piece of sh!t scooter

why not walk, roller blade, bike, whatever
and according to this

Do you walk at 12 mph? Me neither. Additionally most people are unwilling to walk even when able. And bike to work? I just did it for 4 months. SUCKS. The reason it sucks is because I get to work sweaty and I get to put on wrinkled clothes from my backpack. Excercising to work is impractical.

<< a six hour charge for 15 miles, on level ground, not very convenient >>

How come? Go to work with it, plug it in for the duration of the workday, in the evening, ride it back home, plug in it for the night. No problems there. and of course, the battery-technology would improve over time.
