Depends on my mood. The Gary Jules video is a lot less gay though.

Gary Jules. He played it for us at Cats Cradle in Chapel Hill last month. Great stuff.

Personally, this is one instance where the cover track is as good, and in some ways better then the original. But still, TFF wrote this song and I loved it from day one. Gary's version adds a lot to it and is very good in its own right. I had to pick TFF simply because its their song.

Thats because Gary Jules covered this song for THAT MOVIE.

The guy has only done two songs from what I can find - this one and "Whiskey For Everybody" which is on some Myspace album. AND he didn't write this song he just covered it.

TFF .... I give em the nod just because Roland Orzabal's hair is to DIE for !!

I have a hard time going with a cover version on certain occasions .. this happens to be one of them. That is advice (for the young at heart, for soon they will be older).

Love the TFF version. Never heard of Jules and never saw Donnie Darko. So I guess I'm voting TFF.

I think they are both excellent songs, but there is something about TFF that makes it so powerful.

The other dude did it slower and sadder... but it needed that twing of craziness that TFF gave it. The morbidity made it interesting but it just wasn't as good.

How are you 15 years too late? This song was covered for Donnie Darko in 2001 (the year the movie came out) and that was the first time this song was heard. He didn't release it on anything else until 2003 so you would of had to buy the Donnie Darko soundtrack to get this song.

The original TFF song was written in 1982. Anyone who thinks Jules' version is "better" probably doesn't like the 80's pop synth scene. TFF revolutionized so much music and influenced tons of electronic music that we hear today no matter what genre

I presented these two songs to a culture and psychology calss as being representative of perceptions of external and internal locus of control. The orig, seems to be saying that the world the narrator speaks from is a mad one, the narrator is being affected by external factors outside of his control. The Jules version takes the exact same lyrics but it feels as though the narrator is speaking from an introverted persepctive, as though the world he is in feels mad to him.

Like both, prefer Jules, more impactful, speaks more to the experience of the individual.

Yea, the song that he didn't write speaks more to HIS experience as an individual. Not to the person who actually wrote the song. Makes sense.

Good art speaks to the universal experience of being. That's how we appreciate poetry or song, because it speaks to and informs our own experiences. We read poetry and say "yeah, I've felt that way".

A cover song can be a strict reproduction or it can be a reinterpretation, which is what Jules is doing, and doing well.

Ok. I finally heard the Gary Jules version. Curt Smith sings a lot better than Gary Jules and the music is much better. All IMHO of course.

I happen to like 80s music, especially the European bands, and Tears for Fears is no exception. Also, I grew up in the 80s but I still prefer the Gary Jules version.

Definitely Jules. The Tears for Fears version is too bouncy. Jules' rendition is haunting and beautiful; it will still bring a tear to my eye. Of course, I have special attachment, as I used the Jules version in a movie I made, so there's that.

In other polls, I prefer Disturbed's version of Shout to Tears for Fears'. Apparently Tears for Fears wrote songs I like, they just couldn't perform them well. It's kinda like Bob Dylan; say what you will but All Along the Watchtower was golden in the hands of Jimi Hendrix. And I've never understood Bob's popularity. If any other artist got on stage and started caterwauling like a possum being eaten by wolves, you would demand your money back. Doesn't make any sense...
