no, accountability - mentioned earlier
although maybe they could eliminate either one or the other, but not both

Fine with me, but I doubt it would do very much. Maybe I underestimate the postcount neffers.

I'm all for it.

Why are you for it? you're one of the few that has a special title.

I'd be ok with it.

You have an awesome custom title, just thought I'd let you know that :)

I like it too... but if it's takes losing it to help clean up this place, then whatever.

I don't care, but would prefer them kept just because of the flaming that would likely come from certain members.

Well, for people who are new to this site, postcount does provide some indication of which people have truly been around for a while... moreso than join date provides.

I suggest this: posts in OT and P&N do NOT count toward total posts.
Nef posts in other forums result in vacations

A little policing up front by the mods to make it clear that it'll be enforced, and all should go well.

Oh, and then create a homework help in math and physics forum, so I can get credit for those helpful posts that normally occur in OT :)

I was fixing to suggest the same thing.

exactly.

Most people who are lifers don't have 10k posts by writting postcount ++; they have it because of one of the following reasons

1) they post while at work so they respond to every thread
2) they get into flamewars with other members so they get in like 30 posts per thread
3) they actually contribute a lot
4) they have been a member for a while and its just added up

People are going to write stupid posts/nonsense posts and nef no matter what. Titles and post counts have very little to do with it all.

eliminating post count is a VERY BAD idea

would be VERY hard to spot the newly registered free ipod guys

also eliminates a way to find the active users, people that posts here a lot

usually I gauge the poster's quality by a combination of join date and post count (and custom title of course)

take away these and u might as well take away usernames

Honestly I love this place, but I love looking at the history. My number is important to me, if it was gone, I probably would post/and contribute a lot less.

That said, FS/T, etc, Ipod scams, etc, e-penii, etc...

No, because we're not all equal. Should we remove grades from school because all students are equal regardless of the quality of their work?

need a don't care option. I think most people know me now so it doesn't really matter.

Postcount may be unnecessary, but it's what we've got. The place wouldn't be the same without our hi-count uppercrust. It holds out the hope that someday, possibly, if I have nothing better to do with my life than post, I might become -

highly numbered? all around

I post here because it's one of my favorite communities and I love it here not because of a custom title. It would be nice to see RossMAN with a joined date and that's it. Then the only way you're distinguished from other forum members is your join date and content of your posts.

I'm still the same RossMAN I was when I was made the transition from
Junior -> Senior -> Golden -> Platinum -> Diamond -> Elite -> Chief Ferengi -> Grand Nagus
what spurred this on?

I think the join date is a valid thing, for the most part. The post count is worthless. Special titles for members like jokersmoker, RossMan, and the helpful folks in other forums is OK, but one read of a well constructed post will tell someone if this is a poster worth paying attention to.
The "squeaky wheel" method currently used to get a special title takes away from the title itself, IMO. We don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but something like a vote would be more appropriate. Say that a certain percentage of a given day's or week's posters has to vote when are put up for a title, or you don't get it.
