Reason being: I've got the all-too-common case of having parents that think AOL is great, and anything else is spyware. Installed Firefox one day only to be chewed out for "installing a virus on the CPU". Yep, you heard correctly, I installed a virus on the CPU. I respect my parents and all, but they are morons when it comes to the times we live in.

Oh, and by the way, the next computer we will be getting will most likely be an overpriced POS bought off of ShopNBC. All my time spent on NewEgg will have been in vain, and I don't even have the backbone to tell them they could build something superior for much less. Ain't it great? :disgust:

I feel your pain, When I was a teenager my mother came to me for advice she said "WOW we are going to be on the cutting edge, so hun I need your help in shopping for a computer" all of my advise was for nothing the day I came home and found some generic POS with a no-name crap motherboard, and then fast 2x CD-ROM with a mind of it's own( it ate many cd's). I have been in your shoes before and it hurts.

But I have an Idea, tell me what you want from new-egg and I will set up a fake buisness and sell it to them as the latest and greatest.

HAHA :D

I think I'm actually going to open to my mouth about building though. Better to try and not succeed rather than not trying at all. Wish me luck.

In a couple years, you'll see why suggesting others build isn't the greatest idea. Doing tech support and being blamed for a crappy computer every time they break it gets old. Unless someone really likes building and messing around with computers, building isn't the way to go. Suggest they get a Dell or something with a nice warranty and customer support. Makes your life easier.

Building is great for your own personal computer if you like that sort of thing. I've built every computer I've ever owned. Most people love to build systems for others when they first learn how and how much you can save. Most quit doing it soon after because it's a headache. Your parents will blame you anytime something goes wrong on the "custom" built machine. They will cuss Dell if you don't build it.

There's only one solution then: Nothing must go wrong. With all the knowledge I've picked up these past few years, and with the amazing AT forums handy, that goal isn't too improbable.

I do have all the money I would need for a computer stashed away in various personal bank accounts(My Aunt and I set them up), but my parents would never allow a second computer in the house for fear of the electricity costs. So, I'm not going to spend my own money on something everyone in the household will use, and therefore everybody else in the household will endanger.

And, in case my post is somehow misunderstood, I'm not arguing with you or trying to be hostile, no matter how it sounds.

And one more thing: Sorry, OP, for hijacking your thread.

i'd first like to say that i love your poll. you properly spelled all the choices and listed every choice i know of including an other option. *sets as example for the noobs* :)

firefox user here. <3 the extensions to death. the only reason i keep maxthon as a backup browser is because opera (aint bad) and firefox can't display some sites properly like launch.yahoo.com videos and trendmicro's housecall (online antivirus).

I use IE and I have all ActiveX features disabled. My browser has yet to be hijacked since having done this, but I do get an annoying popup I must click away when I visit any site that uses an ActiveX component.

I only started with Firefox this month because they finally got some stable Yahoo Companion support (mozdev). I cannot power-use without it.

I still hate the fact that not all websites/embedded vids work with FF.

Firefox primarily. I do still use IE occasionally, as some sites don't work with Firefox.

And neither are reasons I switched. I used IE exclusively till my friends showed my opera. It's the features that made me switch. IE has none. Opera does a lot of things that make my browsing faster, more convenient, and comfortable.

It's like upgrading from a dinky civic to a chrysler 300c.

Like? Maybe there's some I don't know about that will make me switch too. :)

A rebel is someone who does not comform to standards set by society. So using that quick defintion, Microsoft is the rebel here with its non-conforming and non-standards-complient web browser. Netscape is the original web browser untill Microrebelsoft came along. IE is just a Rebel, that does not conform to CSS. The opensource and alternatvie (opera) browsers are conforming to web based standards that MS does not adhere to.

I have mozill suite 1.7 and firefox 1.0 both work fine with gmail. OH, by the way Gmail Supports POP3, so why are you using your web browser to get email? Download Mozilla Thunderbird Email Client and set it to get your email for you and never use a browser to get messages again.

It's the features that made me switch.

Like? Maybe there's some I don't know about that will make me switch too. :)

Tabbed browsing. Doesn't clutter my toolbar when I go to several sites at once. And you can go to several sites at once with saved sessions. If there are a few sites you check out every time you browse, like I do, then it's handy to have them all load for your viewing pleasure.

Mouse gestures allow faster browsing. With a slight movement of the mouse I can open a new blank tab, open a link in a background tab or in a foreground tab, close a page, move forward or backward, fast forward or rewind(a little more advanced browsing), etc. It's very easy to use and makes browsing much faster.

POP3 email access. Checks my various email accounts at the same time and notifies me when I recieve new mail. Changes Opera icon to mail icon in case I miss the popup, but doesn't change the icon if it's caught by my spam filter.

Built-in IRC client. Simple way to access IRC if you don't play the idleRPG(people who are always in IRC).

Popup blocker. Built-in, allows popups requested by user so it doesn't block the popups you do want.

In the rare case the browser does crash, it saves where you were browsing so when you reload it it will ask you if you want to continue where you left off. Also saves every window you close in case of accidental closure. Quickly reopen the window and continue browsing.

The WAND! With a 2 button keystroke you can login to every site you visit. Saves your username and password for that site. Extremely handy and useful. Another way to make browsing quick.

Master password. Lockout other users from accessing info like email and whatnot through your browser by having a master password. Useful if you live with people known to be jerks like that. Kind of annoying otherwise.

I'm sure I'm missing some stuff other people use...

That's all great... and I understand you're attacking the "rebels"... but the fact remains $#!T doesn't always work on FF while it does for IE. Until useability is on par, this should not be used as a selling point.

And secondly, it is true that rebels are the driving force behind the FF campaign. I wish people would stop touting and hyping it like it's the 2nd coming.

The only thing I know of that doesn't work is ActiveX, I've been IE-free for years and since you can setup Windows Automatic Updates to download and install the updates or prompt you with them, there's no need to run IE for that.

And secondly, it is true that rebels are the driving force behind the FF campaign

So any software developers that don't work for MS are rebels?

I wish people would stop touting and hyping it like it's the 2nd coming.

It's better than the second coming, it's actually real.

Second coming is real too. New software being better than old software is an everday occurence, doesn't make firefox better than the second coming.

Yeah, wow those tabs sound truly amazing. Sure, I can alt-tab through open browser windows with IE, but tabs are totally Xtreme!!!!! Besides I like to browse 14 pron sites at the same time and that really clutters up my toolbar especially when I'm also burning 3 DVDs, chatting on IM,YM, and ICQ and playing Far Cry at the same time.

And, sure, Netscape Communicator 4.02 had built-in email support and we all skipped it it lieu of a full fledged email client.......but this Firefox one is open-source and Gen-X and l33t.
