No, a 4-speed OD automatic is only 4 gears, the 4th gear is the overdrive gear. That 4th "shift" he's feeling is the torque converter locking up. The torque converter locks for improved fuel economy and the locking is often perceived as an extra "shift". The locking of the torque converter typically drops RPM by about 500.Originally posted by: Bignate603

Hmm, low 90s mph in this (the burgandy thing in the middle, not that dinky red thing off to the right 😛) on I96 in Michigan on the way back to the Ann Arbor area from Grand Rapids. The speedometer goes up to 125 mph, but I don't wanna get a ticket slapped on me really easily. I did 0 - 90 mph from a red light turned green on a 45 mph road once around 1 am one night though. The stats for the van says it only has 4 gears, but I swear I feel it shift 4 times (1->2, 2->3, 3->4, 4->5) when I accelerate from 0. The tach red lines at 6000, but I've only taken it up to 4000 or so. I normally drive the max speed I can get under 2200 RPMs (normally around 70 mph) for fuel efficiency, but I would love to take it out on a good 10, 20 miles of empty road in the middle of nowhere and take it to the max (or just empty the streets of Ann Arbor and let me drive around wherever and however fast I want, heheh).
