The Ferrari F360 Modena is the most beautiful car I've ever seen a picture of. On the day I saw photos in Car and Driver, I stopped caring what any other car looked like. Everything else is just another car.

TRUE STORY:

I remember 1991 Auto Show; I think it was Geneva or Frankfurt perhaps... The Ferrari team was showing off the F40, while the Bugatti just introduced the EB-110. Both cars looked spectacular, and had about the same price and performance (but really the Bugatti was a bit cheaper and faster). One of the reporters came up to the Bugatti CEO and asked how his car compared to the F-40. Everyone gathered around... Lots of news people, cameras, etc. The Bugatti Guy slowly opens the back hood (engine in the back) of the EB-110, takes out a cigarette and places it standing on top of the engine! Then he continues to open the door, climbs inside and starts the car... Revs once, revs again, revs once more to redline, about 8500 RPM, the engine is going crazy, lots of noise etc... The cigarette is still standing... The Bugatti guy climbs out, and boldly says to the reporter: "I want to see Enzo Ferrari do this on his car". The Ferrari guys just turned around embarrassed and never made any more claims that day.

This is interesting if it is true (hard to see how it is necessarily a "TRUE STORY," given that you were apparently not there, and cannot articulate where this happened), but I doubt Ferrari would ever have said that a main design goal with the F40 was ultimate silence and smoothness, or, more specifically, the ability to balance cigarettes. I can't see why this demonstration would embarrass Ferrari in the slightest, since the F40 was essentially designed as a roadgoing race car, not a luxurious GT car like the Veyron.

The fact remains that the Veyron, as gorgeous and formidable as it is, is vaporware at this point. To borrow your phrase, this "REAL car enthusiast" prefers cars that actually exist. By all appearances the Veyron will raise the bar for what a roadgoing car can do, and I am all for it, but I will believe the numbers when I see the car in production.

Bugatti team didnt design the engine to balance cigarettes... The point is: it puts out 600 hp's or so, and when reved at max RPM's, it operates superbly, when the engine doesnt shake, it means all the parts are perfect to the nanometer, just ask any auto mechanical engineer. Ferraris are great looking and fast, but also you know Ferrari engines can only stand about 70K miles... thats it. A Ferrari with 50K on it is considered to be at the end of its rope. Bugatti engines are in the league with Porsche and BMW, where they can provide all the power and still be fully operational at 200K miles.

You need a honda/acura.
I have a Honda! LOL It's an '85 Honda Prelude.

You sure it wasn't beat on? =) I've got a friend who has a prelude with 175k miles. no major problems.

For a daily driver, somewhat practical vehicle, either an RS6 or an M5.

For a daily driver sports car, an NSX - Or two 360 Modenas so I always have one available while the other is getting repaired.

For a weekend driver that would be garaged the rest of the time, probably a Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina.

What I'd rather have? Aston Martin Vanquish.. class, style, speed.. :D

I wouldn't mind a Skyline Blackhawk either.. :p

Oh, and I think that Veyron looks ugly.. ;)

Audi S8!!! Thats a friggin large ass sedan, we are talking about sports cars here.

How can you call this ugly? Look at the interior, i say it beats the Aston Martin by a shot, it's like all wood and titanium/aluminum.

I'll take a wagon variant of the new RS6. I'm too practical for my own good. Besides, who'd expect a wagon to do a 4.7 second 0-60 :D

Great Article

The white iterior is ugly tho, i'd go with red/black. Look at that ass!

The first performance figures have also been finalized: it will reach a top speed of 406 km/h (252 mph) and accelerate from a standstill to 300 km/h (186 mph) in under 14 seconds.

To blink an eye is to miss half the fun that this all-wheel-drive sports car can offer! From a standing start, the Bugatti EB 16-4 Veyron passes the 300-km (186 mph) mark before 14 seconds have elapsed. A unique acceleration figure, even if largely a theoretical one. The real character of the Bugatti is to be sought in the unbelievable torque it places at the driver's disposal.

1,250 newton-meters (922 lb/ft of torque) overwhelm any opposition put up by gravity or aerodynamic drag to such an extent that the Bugatti EB 16-4 Veyron seems to be moving along the road as if these physical forces simply didn't exist.

0-60 should be under 3 seconds

The thing is, they only ever made 31 EB110s, and to date the Veyron is also not a production car. You are talking about, essentially, one-off vehicles with handmade engines, and all of the theories about what the Veyron can do (in terms of performance and engine longevity) are just that: theories. In the meanwhile, Ferrari has the richest racing heritage of any builder, ever, and the McLaren's 627 bhp engine is by BMW, who you just cited as a paragon of design excellence.

The prewar Bugattis are some of the most special cars ever built, but the only thing they share with the current and future Bugattis is a name; now Bugatti is just another (very small) part of the VW/Audi empire. I am not picking on the car, since it will by all appearances inherit the title of the world's best-performing street-legal car, but at this point it does not exist. Remember the Vector, which has been promised as a production car for something like 20 years now? That was going to be the world's fastest car too . . .

I can only pick 1? Hmm.. I'd have to go with the McLaren F1. If I could only drive one car though for everything I'd have to go with the BMW M5 because it's far more practical. Gotta love a car that seats 4 and will eat many hardcore supercars for lunch performance wise.

I feel sorry for the people that said saleen, NSX, and viper over such beasts as the mclaren F1 or a top of the line ferrari.

Anyway personally the MF1 although that 1000 HP bugatti is a hot piece of ass too.

I'm a fan of American Muscle, so I'm going with the '67 Shelby GT 500. My absolute favorite, regardless of the performance of any other car out there.

Close second would be a Viper.

Depending on the performance, the 2004 Mustang should be pretty sweet. It is going to be a flashback to the late 60s early 70s fastbacks.

In all of my dreams, I still have to tell myself that I can't afford any of these cars. I can't wait until my school bills are paid off.

I would chose a fun car to drive, not just the fastest thing on four wheels.

My personal favorite vehicle is the 1949 to 1952 Ferrari 166MM.

The 1999 Bentley Hunaudieres Concept you just posted doesnt come close to some of the cars here... It looks like a great car, but i dunno.. its a Bentley, i would not place my bets on it.

Linkey

Yes we all know that the McLaren has the BMW engine, so does the new RR, so BMW freaks (like me) can claim that BMW powers worlds most "luxurious" and "fastest" cars, to end all arguments, hehe. :D

The Ford GT40 wont be made, Ford already said that, for now at least... and even if it was, i doubt it could outrun a 911 Turbo.

Well, i remmeber back in 1991 everyone said that the EB-110 is just a concept car, etc.. But i have seen one of them on the autobahn in Germany... Kinda makes all the Testarossas and 911's look like family cars.

One more thing. The Vecror is a SUPER POS a car. If i remember correctly, its an American company who used Lamborghini engines, and the Vector W12 looked like an ugly Diablo, and had the same specs, and even the same price, since it was basically a Diablo with an ugly body.... They were produced, its not a concept car.
