POLL: Do you take the time to lap your heatsinks?

No since in lapping, unless you lap the core and the heatsink. Given that, I have lapped GPU cores (because they are very uneven), and GPU heatsinks. I've never done a CPU before though.

I use retail cpus, do not overclock, and I am not paranoid about cpu temperatures.

I usually use a dremel w/buffing wheel to get the tiny scratches out to get a mirror finish.

How do you all lap your heatsinks?

The only way I know to do it is on a piece of plate glass with different levels of sandpaper/compound.

Same way you do small engine cylinder heads...

no, I buy high quality heatsinks, lapping actually degrades thier performance.

I used to, but manufacturing tech has finally caught up.

Yep I lap my heatsink with 400grit then 600grit sandpaper. Thermalright heatsinks come very coarse. I got over 5C gain with the lap.
My older SK-6, I lapped to 2000sandpaper with silver polish. Mirror shine!

Man, that's WAY too much!

I bought a system from someone on here years ago that couldn't get it running stable. When I pulled it apart, it had about a half a tube of heatsink compound on it. I cleaned it up, lapped everything and put it back together with a (SMALL) amount of AS and it ran like a dream!

My computer at work is a P4 2.6. No thermalpaste and no lap at all!

heh, I wouldn't bother lapping a HSF, but I'm thinking about buying an extra intake manifold for $100, p&p it and add in a thermal gasket for my slow high 15 second 4 cylinder car.

Thats how I do it, then I finish off with a good metal polish.
