Demand for petroleum is and will continue to be on the increase, that is the reason why prices are as high as they are. Supply cannot keep up with demand for a few reasons:

  1. Refineries are near peak capacity.
  2. Refieries are also very old in the USA
  3. OPEC is intentionaly not pumping as much crude as they should
  4. China is now a major consumer of oil.
Demand will out strip supply for the forseeable future.

Not a very good liar are you.

Oil Inventories are at 7 year highs.

Oil Production has been in oversupply for past 2 years.

Gas Inventories are ahead of last year.

Try again, it has NOTHING to do with the BS Supply & Demand crap.

Oh and let China have all the Oil and Gas, we don't need it anyway since we don't make anything here.

I live in the inner city, in a town with decent public transport. I do think it is kind of funny the way people who drive cars are constantly whining about the high gas prices. I feel a bit sorry for them. But I also think maybe hopefully it will be a benefit for the environment if people are driving less often.

I remember 90 cents a gallon 🙁

I remember 75 cents a gallon 🙁

I remember when my boat took exactly 60 gallons, and it was exactly $60 to fill it.

My present boat takes 88 gallons and will sit in the barn, if this crap continues.

The lowest gas price I can remember, was when it was 29c per gallon, and my dad was complaining about going fishing in Canada and having to pay 75c per gallon at the marinas. 🙂

why dont they take some of that 15 billion in profit and build some more infrastructyure to suppor tthe increasing demand??

Answer: greed. nothing else.

Well, in the netherlands you pay a (40% ?) tax on new cars, as well as tax for owning a car.

I'm i favor of higher gas prices, if those 2 taxes are removed.
As it stands now I am not buying a car I won't be using it enough to justify the costs (public transport in my area is faster)
At least you have the option of public transporatation. Here in the states you drive or sit at home.

Higher gas prices = more research on hybrid and alternative fuel technologies. This is a good thing. One day alternative fuel will be cheaper and better for the environment than burning gasoline. That day will come eventually, and we can loosen the grip that oil has on every aspect of our society. We need that oil for other, more important things than cheap transportation.

I'm not sure about the rest of the reasons that people are talking about
The Brazilians have been running automobiles on ethanol for about 20 years now. The technology is there, but big oil in in Congress' back pocket and because of that nothing will change.

What about politics - the "not in my back yard" mentality?

i do like the idea that higher gas prices will force car companies to explore more eco-friendly cars.

Do I support them... no.

Do I like them... no.

Do I b!tch and moan about paying $70 to fill my tank... no. (Well I do, but just to myself...there aint nuttin I can do about it. I need to drive. I need to get to work etc. Although once I pay off my truck, I will be getting a smaller "commuter" car to get my backside to work and back. 😉 )

I'll keep the truck to haul stuff and tow the trailer.

😕
Um.... do you secretly (or openly) support a big wooden stick being rammed up your a$$ everytime you need to fill up?

I don't support rising gas prices overall; however, I do support rising the gas prices everytime a SUV pulls in at a specific pump. The gas prices should go back to normal after that SUV leaves.

no... but I do support increased taxes on especially fuel inefficient vehicles (SUV's, non-commercial trucks, hummers, etc)

i agree with this. if you wanna waste gas, you should have to pay for it

I fail to see what you and everyone else has against SUV's.

Perhaps a $.50/gal gas tax like they have in Europe would drive people to conserve more and help protect the environment. We sure aren't doing anything about it by letting the market determine it.

BINGO!!!
oil companies probably know that oil suppiles are dwindling and they want to cash in as much as they can while they still can

I secretly support higher gas prices because it means that less people will call me a moron for driving a hybrid (although I didn't buy a hybrid because I wanted to spend less money on gas).

We should charge more to fill up a hybrid since they get better MPG, that way we can charge less to fill up SUV's and trucks. If you want to drive a little peeon car, you should have to pay extra to do so.
