It's easy for me to say, because I don't drive, but I would totally support a tax that brought it up to $10/gallon, especially if the proceeds went directly to private research into alternative fuels.

Maybe:

1) Higher gas prices discourages joy riding. You know, those noodnicks who just drive around for the sake of driving around. Especially those with their stereos turned up too loud.

2) Less driving = less pollution

3) Less demand = gas prices fall again

What do you think?

1) Unless you do it EVERY DAY it doesnt affect this much. Most ride outs are once in a while, and 5 extra bucks of gas is not going to affect that demand.

2) less driving hurts the economy. alot.

3) Gasoline is an inelastic demand.

I completely disagree with #3. Thats why you have increased costs every summer due to "summer driving season". But if fuel prices are beyond the reach of consumers, they wont buy it! Pretty simple.

Sure there are 100million different reasons including reformulation that comes into play, but bottom line, people dont make money by keeping it in tanks; they make money when you fill up your tank. If I decide to walk - no money from me.

i support higher prices until this month when i am scheduled to drive to a 100 mile a day total to and from a client everyday for the next few months

yesterday morning on my way to work, gas was 2.69 for the cheapest stuff. on my way home it was 2.79. wtf is the reason for a .10 price increase in about 10 hours?

That pretty much does it for gas these days. Two things I really hate about gas prices are: as soon as something happnes (such as a pipeline bombing in Iraq or refinery troubles in New Orleans, gas prices rise almost instantly. It isn't like the expensive gas is suddently getting to the pump overnight... The second thing is when prices begin to fall, it is only 1 or 2 cents a day, but when it goes up, it goes up at 5 to 10 cents at a time.

That supply and demand stuff can only go so far; oil companies are ripping off American consumers big time.

Gas prices have been around 1.50 a gallon. after the war in IRAQ started it has doubled. Yet consumption has not decreased. infact, it has increased. You are saying Gasoline is not an inelastic demand? right now it's the same as with gas, water and electricity. Sure if electricity was more expensive, we'd turn off the tv and lights more... but that doesnt make it an elastic demand.

I'm not trying to say that #3 means that we would continue with our driving habits, but it is categorized as an inelastic demand in economy 101 as of now.

coal is the worst energy source there is in terms of pollution. Hydroelectric FTW, with natural gas a good second.

You guys stop complaining and enjoy your cheap gas as long as you have it - we pay 6.20/gallon....
It hurts, but it doesnt kill us...

But when we are taxed for everything under the sun to the max by our government and they increased the price of natural gas and electricity by 50% in the last 6 years the huge increase at the pump does effect us a bit more some more then others. Just because you or I are doing well doesnt mean EVERYONE is doing well. Just because you got an education doesnt mean everyone got one and because you did makes eveyone stupid.

Americans pay much less tax than most industrialized nations.

What do you think?

..raise the driving age to 21 and get yet even more reckless morons off the road and save a lot more then gas. Insurance rates would drop and lives would be saved.. pubescent joy riding/competition rap thumpers would be a thing of the past.

Exxon post sales in excess of $350 billion, The most ever.
Profit... $35 Billion, the largest ever.

No, I do not support higher gas prices, until I post the highest ever earnings as well.

I have 2 cars specifically for the purpose of "joy riding" as you put it. I call it cruising. Whatever.

They both take premium only and the price of gas (about $50 each per fill up today) doesn't matter a bit to me.

I would love to see $4.50+ a gallon and see GM go under and all the other Car makers making gas guzzlers switch to making more fuel "EFFICIENT" vehicles!!!!

I know a few dealer friends that work at Mazda & Nissan and they say people are trying to bring these SUV's in for trade for small vehicles and they laugh them off the lot.

You dumb in the head? If I had stock in any carmaker but foreign, I'd dump it quick NOW!!!!!!! Situations in the East are'nt getting any better.

Increase in raw material prices leads to increase in inflation which leads to higher interest rates and recession.

No I rather not have higher gas prices.

I'm the official thread killer.............. I post a remark and the thread is soon dead!
Touch my forehead for the POWER! **LMAO**

I love a Rainy Night!

Eh, stop whining... gas here is 2.89/2.99/3.09 and going up every day... and this is Texas 🙁 We always used to have the LOWEST gas in the country, not the HIGHEST. When you drive 60mi a day it starts to hurt.

i support rising gas prices if it encourages people to stop buying humongous "texas"-fat-a$$ edition suvs

Atleast in the DFW area we have some of the highest gas in the nation.

I like your suv name!

I agree with gas prices becuase it keeps people from buying SUVs that don't need them and discourages people to just joy ride for fun. Pollution, wasting oil FTL
