I know a lot of people who could do a good job of acting smart if they'd just keep their mouths shut.

<<For the purposes of this poll, we'll say that "intelligent" means you think you're smarter than 75% of the population.>>

Considering the number of third world countries, yes. ;)

Working as a medic for many years now, I have seen lots of people trying their best to win the Darwin Award.

Do you consider yourself intelligent?

I thought so yesterday but someone called me a 'dumbass' today so I'm not sure.

Cheers ! :)

I don't say a whole lot, but when I finally do, it doesn't make a damn bit of sense.

Insane people believe that they are sane. Morons believe that they are intelligent. What is your criteria for being intelligent?

Ehhh. I'm kinda the same as datalink. I can see the BS being played...most of the time I play it too, but sometimes i get pissed off because conversation gets really shallow and pointless. Like the many others here, I don't think grades or standardized testing or honors classes mean much, I know A LOT of people who are in honors classes, get high SAT scores, and "seem" smart, but are really stupid as hell, etc. I can reason pretty well, i remember things, i can come up to solutions to most problems, well educated, and have a bit of common sense, so I picked yes. I'm working more on the social part of my intelligence, it's adequate, but not doing too well :D
But now that I think about it, i doubt i'm really above 75%. Definitely above the status quo, but not that high

"For the purposes of this poll, we'll say that "intelligent" means you think you're smarter than 75% of the population. We're going to go ahead and limit "population" to the country in which you live. " <-- from first post.

I voted yes. 1440 SAT, 800 Verbal. 99th percentile on almost all of the other tests I have taken (except for math- more like ~87th there)

I was in the top 50 or so in HS out of a class of 700. However, my class included about 30-40 people who got into Ivy League schools and about 250+ who got into UC or higher. Also included about 10 people to get 1600s etc etc.

I think I have excellent writing skills and exceptional analysis skills for some types of problems. However, I am not "super" at math , nor do I consider myself to be socially smart. Luckily, however, I am generally liked by professors/teachers/employers.

PS- I am also a "slow" thinker- dont expect a fast answer from me on anything. :)

Why is it hard to determine intelligence? You're tested on it most times when you go for an interview and they throw you a logical puzzle (that you've never heard about). If you are even headed in the right direction with the answer, they may even hire you. If you're able to solve it or at least have some educated ideas to solve it, why can't that qualify as being intelligent?

What's with all these standardized exams? Bah.

calculus mark: 76%
physics mark: 89%
chemistry mark: 94%
english mark: 46%
social mark: 61%
IQ: 148

in terms of looking for what i know i'm looking for, yes i am very smart. in terms of trying to bleed a rock (interpret motive behind imaginary characters in books) then i'm a retard.

intelligence is not measurable, all is relative to the observer. everybody is intelligent but what are they intelligent at is the question.
pssssssst math is more credible than english because math has a right answer and a wrong answer, english is wrong unless it's longer than 5 pages.

I thought I was...until I came to Georgia Tech. A friend of mine was recently awarded the Rhodes Scholarship; he majored in both Physics and Match and finished both his undergrad and graduate work in 4 years. Now that is smart!

Granted, I am not the most intelligent person in the world, but I do have some street smarts. I'm smart enough to come to ATOT when I have a question, and that's good enough, right?
