I guess I'm pretty intelligent, but I'm not sure what my IQ is, and I'm not around lots of people to compare my knowledge with that of others.

<< Yes, I am very intelligent. I'm a MENSA member and my IQ is 236. >>

So you have high levels of smartness as well?

Not really. In fact, I'm just a few IQ points away from the what is considered average for a snail.

But don't tall anyone. It's kinda embarrassing.

So, what's the color of the boathouse at Hereford?

To anyone who's curious, you don't have to be Einstein to get into Mensa, you just have to score in the 98th percentile on a standardized IQ test. Also, an IQ score number is somewhat meaningless since different tests give different point values to the same percentile rank.

Brought to you by the giant throbbing brains of Mensa

According to standardized tests (ACT/SAT, no prep), I'm above 75% in math, science, english, history but below average in reading comprehension (freaking 37th percentile). Also, I'm not very socially intellegent. Take it for what its worth, I voted yes.

Yes, most IQ tests tell me I am brilliant (98th percentile). My EQ is high as well.
But then consider the waste my life has been, makes you wonder. :p

BTW: Don't forget that something like 75% of people (Americans polled on the Street IIRC but I think further studies have been done, not too sure of the figure but it's about that range) consider themselves to be above average intelligence/beauty/charisma etc.

We generally have a much higher opinion of ourselves than other people.

Take that bias into account when tabulating the figures.

I consider myself intelligent enough to get by high school and the first year and a half of college without studying and still pull around a 3.0. What do you think?

i don't equate good grades with high intelligence. intelligence is more than that.

don't really have a set definition. having common sense is part of it though.

Did you notice how easy high school and the first year and a half of college were? Lots of people have done that, it doesn't make you exceptional.

<< When I look around my classrooms at school, somehow I get the drift that I dont belong there. There are a lot of stupid people in this world... >>

That is EXACTLY how I feel. Or, I am walking around campus, and feel totally alone. Like all these people are concerned with the petty things in the world and they can't open their eyes and see that the path they are on leads to no good end.
>>

This is how I felt in high school. I recommend you read Plato's Allegory of the Cave. It's in one of the Republic books. 7, I believe. It completely captures that very idea. And it's amazing that someone wrote it that long ago. I guess people never change.

I feel the same way. Some of the questions they ask...

I am by no means saying that I'm the most intelligent person in the world. Beyond that, I'm probably not even close. However, I took all honors classes in high school and am working on an Engineering degree in college which makes it a bit more impressive. As far as street smarts (out of the classroom) yeah right. I'm completely lacking. I think that a lot of common sense can be applied in the classroom but most of that is based on book knowledge, so common sense shouldn't be limited to being able to get around in normal life. I can reason through a problem and guess the correct answer quite well which I attribute to common sense.

What is intelligent? Define "intelligence".

Does knowing many facts make you an intelligent person? Does knowing the history of World War II make you an intelligent person? Is intelligent synonymous with "smart"?

Although it may be true that there are a lot of stupid people in this world, there are probably a good portion of them who simply do not care for certain knowledge that normal people otherwise would consider important to know. The word "intelligence" is defined at dictionary.com as "The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge." and "The faculty of thought and reason." It does not say there, that in order to be intelligent, you must know many things. It states that you must have the capacity to learn. Acquire and apply knowledge. Whether you choose to do so, or whether you choose to acquire some knowledge or not, is not indicative of one's intelligence, going by the definition of intelligence from dictionary.com.

<< I guess I'm pretty intelligent, but I'm not sure what my IQ is, and I'm not around lots of people to compare my knowledge with that of others. >>

Comparing knowledge is not comparing intelligence. Someone with an IQ of 120 could easily learn many things that someone with an IQ of 160 does not know. Knowing does not constitute intelligence. Almost anyone with the desire and motivation can learn vast amounts of knowledge.

True intelligence is shown by ability to reason, ability to solve more complicated problems more quickly and make more efficient use of your memory system (not sure if that last thing would count, but I'll add it in, in case). In my case, I don't know all that much, I'm not great at problem solving, and I have fairly poor memory management. By such criteria, I would not be especially intelligent. So therefore I must draw the conclusion that I am in fact not overly intelligent and probably no more intelligent than the average male of my age. I do however have more knowledge pertaining to computers than the average person, even though that average is ever-increasing. I am fairly good at guessing, sometimes. SOME things I can remember easily/well, other things not. In some light, I may consider myself intelligent, in others not.

I doubt one can discern a viable definition of intelligence which considers all factors, to draw an accurate conclusion. Taking a simple 20 question online IQ test won't tell you anything.

And finally, my final point. Why is intelligence even contemplated here? Why does it hold any value whatsoever? Whether someone is intelligent or not somehow determines their worth? I think not.

I've probably made a complete fool of myself writing this, but that's ok, it wouldn't be the first time that happened. If you noticed, I used a somewhat clean and rich vocabulary and avoided making typograpihcal or grammatical errors. It seemed fitting for this topic. :)

G'nite, y'all! :D

Edit: For the record, I voted no.

Depends on your definition of the term.....if you go by the OT postings one would think Anandtech was inhabited by morons with little or no practical skills in life at all!

I voted no as I've always had the opinion that if I could do it anyone could. I decline to state the obvious....:D

Go through life thinking you are something special and life will kick your butt....

I read somewhere that Jeff Bezio (founder of amazon) used to put his IQ on his resume. Perhaps we should try that?
