What is intelligent? Define "intelligence".
Does knowing many facts make you an intelligent person? Does knowing the history of World War II make you an intelligent person? Is intelligent synonymous with "smart"?
Although it may be true that there are a lot of stupid people in this world, there are probably a good portion of them who simply do not care for certain knowledge that normal people otherwise would consider important to know. The word "intelligence" is defined at dictionary.com as "The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge." and "The faculty of thought and reason." It does not say there, that in order to be intelligent, you must know many things. It states that you must have the
capacity to learn. Acquire and apply knowledge. Whether you choose to do so, or whether you choose to acquire some knowledge or not, is not indicative of one's intelligence, going by the definition of intelligence from dictionary.com.
<<
I guess I'm pretty intelligent, but I'm not sure what my IQ is, and I'm not around lots of people to compare my knowledge with that of others. >>
Comparing knowledge is not comparing intelligence. Someone with an IQ of 120 could easily learn many things that someone with an IQ of 160 does not know. Knowing does not constitute intelligence. Almost anyone with the desire and motivation can learn vast amounts of knowledge.
True intelligence is shown by ability to reason, ability to solve more complicated problems more quickly and make more efficient use of your memory system (not sure if that last thing would count, but I'll add it in, in case). In my case, I don't know all that much, I'm not great at problem solving, and I have fairly poor memory management. By such criteria, I would not be especially intelligent. So therefore I must draw the conclusion that I am in fact not overly intelligent and probably no more intelligent than the average male of my age. I do however have more knowledge pertaining to computers than the average person, even though that average is ever-increasing. I am fairly good at guessing, sometimes. SOME things I can remember easily/well, other things not. In some light, I may consider myself intelligent, in others not.
I doubt one can discern a viable definition of intelligence which considers all factors, to draw an accurate conclusion. Taking a simple 20 question online IQ test won't tell you anything.
And finally, my final point. Why is intelligence even contemplated here? Why does it hold any value whatsoever? Whether someone is intelligent or not somehow determines their worth? I think not.
I've probably made a complete fool of myself writing this, but that's ok, it wouldn't be the first time that happened. If you noticed, I used a somewhat clean and rich vocabulary and avoided making typograpihcal or grammatical errors. It seemed fitting for this topic.
G'nite, y'all!
