yeah I got a beater, I think if its possible everyones first car should be total crap. I still have a car that my dad got me (another beater someone else wrecked the first one) and one that I bought with my wife. btw when you do get your car buy slightly used if you can afford one and pay ahead.

That is genius. I must do that when I have kids to parent... if they're not willing to buy their own cars, that is.

I have quite a storied past regarding me, cars, and driving. Basically, after the many times that I "stole" the family car(s), and being busted a few times by various authorities, including one time by the police for driving without a license (I was 15), I was grateful when my mom let me use her car to take my drivers license test at 17. I was moving out and she felt that I should have a license, should I be able to work hard enough to buy my own car.

Well, I did work hard. I bought myself a $250 beater '82 Plymouth Colt that experienced some sort of catastrophic manual transmission failure after about 2 weeks. Then, my dad eventually let me buy his '86 Dodge Omni for $550 ($150 down, four more monthly payments of $100 each).

In short, my parents did not buy me a car while I was in my teens. However, my mom did just give me her classic ?83 Volvo, after my beloved Civic was totaled by a left turning driver who made a big mistake, so I can?t say they never bought me a car in my life.

wow that's depressing. I've had enough experiences with old beaters to know the fear of driving them. How far will I get? How many quarts of oil will it burn today? How much money is the next repair going to cost. Damn that sucks.

Not really. Not anymore, anyway, now that I make a lot more than the $6-7 an hour I made whan I was a kid. I'm rather fearless about it, but I'm a card carrying member of the AAA Gold club ;) just to be sure. If a car's not in condition to drive safely without breaking down, I don't drive it. I fix it before it leaves me stranded. I almost always know when something's about to break. I've always been very mechanically inclined. For example, when I was a kid, I didn't play with my toys, I took them apart and put them back together.

My city didn't have a bus system. The reason I got a car was because my parents couldn't drop me off to school in the mornings :)

Ever heard of the SCHOOL BUS?

Interesting thread.....

I was very spoiled..... No car in high school, but public transportion is a norm in my native Mexico.... so I really didn't need it.

However, for college they offered a brand new 91 Nissan Tsuru (Sentra) if I attended one school, OR an apartment in my name if I attended another school...... (too far to drive)
I chose the apartment, so no car, but they bought me housing, which is better in my view :)

Answering the original question, no car, but owning fully paid housing is tough to beat!!! (I DO mean owning, they paid cash for the apartment.....!!!!) God bless my spoiling parents :)

hrm.

Actually, dad bought me three of them.

But you have to put it in perspective: the first one was an 82 beater that we sold to a cousin...
then he bought an 88 beater from my uncle, which was a nicer car...
and then got me a 95 le sabre when i was in college...

and I paid him back for the le sabre after i graduated.

and he's a nebraskan farmer. we ain't got no money, we's poor hicks here.

No, they never bought me a car. They didn't even help with my college tuition. I was practically forced to buy my first car. My great-grandma had an 84 Mercury Topaz, and she wasn't supposed to be driving anymore. So, long story short, they offered my $1500 for it and I ended up getting it, after $800 extra dollars in repairs to be able to drive it home. Truth be told, though, it was a great little car, and I almost wish I still had it around as a beater car.

Yes, in a way. My parents moved out of state when I was in high school. Because I ended up living along, I got to pick one of the two family cars==either a Rabbit GTi or an Accord. Needless to say, I foolishly chose the Rabbit. :(

I know the reason. They break down every other freaking week. I know Rabbits well. My mom has had two. She bought them from her parents, before her parents switched to Japanese cars. My aunt and uncle also had a Rabbit, and theirs was even worse than my mom's.

I got to use whatever extra car we had lying around (an old Taurus, and later a Dodge Ram pickup). They bought me a $2500 used Hyundai as a "graduation present" when I went to college.

Later, when I said I would be taking the city bus because I could not afford the 5-7mpg the 360 V8 was sucking up, she got all offended and pissed off. She ranted and raved that she bought the truck for me, which she never told me and which I didn't start driving until my senior year in HS, and that I was an ungreatful little sh|t.

Even though I worked to put myself through private school, paid for gas, and insurance on the truck like it was my own. I took care of it, including all maintenance that I knew how to do on my own.

Parents can kiss my ass.

I have similar feelings...I moved out of my parents house when I was 15 and moved in with my grandmother. I worked one part time job during school and two full time jobs in the summer. My parents would not sign for me to get a drivers license so I had to drive 3 years without one.

My parents can pucker up and kiss my ass...

They helped me get it, didn't want me to get screwed. But I had to pay for it.
They helped on insurance during the winter months, if i needed it.
Only a few times did that happen.

They gave me my second car, but someone gave it to them in a will, it needed work and they didn't want it
so they gave it to me and I paided to have it fixed.

Not in high school, but when I was 18, my parents got me an old beat-to-hell Honda CRX from a friend who was moving away. They sold it to us for $20 because they needed to get rid of it and the transmission needed to be fixed anyway.

God, the memories of that stupid car and the countless breakdowns I had in it before I finally got a real job making good money and could afford a new car on my own.

The following stuff had to be fixed (not necessarily in this order) while I had the car:

Starter died.

Alternator died

Radiator died (this is when I got rid of it)

Fuel Filter clogged up, causing the car to jerk around when applying the gas (looked like it had never been changed. This on a 13 year old car with 120+ thousand miles.

Engine blew up inside and had to be replaced completely. Mechanic admitted he screwed up when he worked on the car last and ate the cost of the new engine so we only paid for labor.

Transmission had to be repaired.

Struts needed to be fixed but never did (front end shuddered a LOT at 55 mph and higher, which made it loads of fun to drive on the freeway)

Right front tire blew up. Somehow a stone worked into the sidewall and basically caused the tire to shred. Fortunately I was only going about 25 mph at the time.

Old alarm installed by previous owner had an exposed wire somewhere under the hood that kept brushing against the side of the engine compartment and triggering the alarm, somehow. Finally figured out how to disconnect the alarm. Real fun when this stupid thing starts wailing while you're on the freeway.

Battery died. Got a new one free under warranty.

Odometer died at about 130,000 miles. I put maybe 9,000 miles on the car before I got rid of that POS.

Replaced a broken headlight but screwed up the aiming on the new one.

Right front marker light screws fell out so half the time the turn signal would be hanging by a wire.

Right front turn signal got busted out.

Uggggghhhhh....

Also had some old guy back into me and crack the right front side body panel. Woo-hoo. Almost improved the looks of the car as it was. :D

it was pretty spartan & broke down all the time.
