Basically, after the many times that I "stole" the family car(s), and being busted a few times by various authorities, including one time by the police for driving without a license (I was 15), I was grateful when my mom let me use her car to take my drivers license test at 17. I was moving out and she felt that I should have a license, should I be able to work hard enough to buy my own car.

Well, I did work hard. I bought myself a $250 beater '82 Plymouth Colt that experienced some sort of catastrophic manual transmission failure after about 2 weeks. Then, my dad eventually let me buy his '86 Dodge Omni for $550 ($150 down, four more monthly payments of $100 each).

In short, my parents did not buy me a car while I was in my teens. However, my mom did just give me her classic ?83 Volvo, after my beloved Civic was totaled by a left turning driver who made a big mistake, so I can?t say they never bought me a car in my life.

wow that's depressing. I've had enough experiences with old beaters to know the fear of driving them. How far will I get? How many quarts of oil will it burn today? How much money is the next repair going to cost. Damn that sucks.

No car in high school. I graduated and she got a nifty new Acura TL-s and gave me her nifty camry which has gifted me with years of reliability, shattered windows, stolen hubcaps, and a busted radiator.

I gave her my savings of about 2k so I figure I just got a really good deal. :)

Not just no, BUt HELL NO!
I worked at the McDonalds on Watt Ave in Sacramento, by McClellan AFB for 3.75/hr and saved $250.00 and bought a 1964 Econoline for $200.00 and used the rest for Reg and The first Insurance payment to Dad.

Yes. Shared a car with my twin in high school. Got a newer car in college (sharing it, too).

My parents would absolutely not let me drive some 'beater' car. They would want something safer & more reliable for me.

I had use of one of my parents' cars (we usually had 3), but the third car was mainly for driving my sister and myself to work at my dad's restaurant 50 miles away.

Just a hand me down. '88 Chevy Corsica with 267,000km which I'll hopefully be driving in a month or so...

There going to help me with insurance ($3400...I just can't pay that on my own and be able to justify having a car) and I pay all gas and repairs.

Its a 1993 Toyota Camry LE in otherwise excellent condition. :) I bag on it, but I know its a good car. It was after the econobox years so it has the look of a newer car.

My parents bought me an old K-car when I was about 14 (4 years ago). However, I didn't have a licence at the time (got it in Feb. of this year) and the car was a total piece of sh¡t. The body was completely rusted out, the driver-side door wouldn't close completely, most of the gauges didn't work, nor did the heater, and the engine misfired constantly. With the gas pedal to the floor it would go 35 MPH on average. Even the local junkyard wouldn't take it, so we gave it away to someone.

Now I'm saving up for a car that actually works right. :)

No, when I was in HS we still had the "East", the waiting time for a car was 15 years, the cheapest (Trabant) started at around 10000 (East German) Mark with a monthly salary for an engineer of about 1000 Mark - go figure (a color TV was 6000 Mark, but a loaf a bread was 0.30 Mark, a bun 0.05 Mark :Q

btw, my parants were already in line for a phone line for 14 years when the wall broke down , it took another two y. afterwards until we had one :D

I voted yes, but, not really. They didn't buy it for me, rather they helped pay for a <$2k car (I covered $1200 I believe). That was in 1989-90, a 1972 Cutlass Conv. Still have it (sorta, in my Dad's garage in another state). Still hasn't been fixed up yet. Maybe Someday.

not really. i got my license kinda late, so by the time i graduated, there was no need for a car, however, after i graduated, my aunt gave me her late model cutlass cierra. Without that, i could have never gotten the jeep i have right now. So, no i didnt get a car in HS, but got one after.

Yes and no. They said they'd match whatever amount I could come up with. I paid $700 they paid $500 for a '82 Mercury LN7.
