No, I was handed down the family car, 1987 Toyota Cressida when I was 16 and still driving it today (21 now). Over the years, it has lost AC, the driver side door cannot be opened, transmission busted, passenger windows won't roll down. Asked my parents to get transmission fixed, they just yelled at me.

My sister back then turned 16 and got a 1997 Honda Accord. Reason, they said she needed a reliable and safe car. Maybe some day I will afford a new car. :(

OMG, I got the same car handed down to me from my uncle. Mine lost it's AC, the power steering rack needed to be replaced, transmission was messed up, etc.. I was able to trade it in for almost $3k due to me haggling the hell out of the dealer.. :D

My parents bought a 95' Ford Escort LX w/ 170k miles for $2,000 for me and my older sister to share. However as time went on, my sister pretty much thought of the car as hers (Since I didnt have my license yet).

Then in January of this year, I got my license and then bought myself a car. I bought a 2000 V6 Ford Taurus SE w/ 65k miles for $4,700 (Which I saved from working a lot) and it was a lot of car for the money (Premium audio system, v6, cruise control, power everything, etc.).

Good job! That is a lot of car for the money, and props to you for saving for it, instead of borrowing for it.

No, we were a two car family. But sometimes my mom didn't need the car during the day so I would drive it to school and back. When I started college an elderly relative gave us her car. 1995 Grand Am SE 4DR. My mom got rid of her car so she drove the Grand Am. But occasionally I brought it up to college, for two weeks here and two weeks there. Finally, 2nd semester senior year of college I was able to have the Grand Am for the whole semester since my mom got a lease on a new car.

Shared a hand me down between myself and bro, but she was totalled last year (85 Bonnie). Sharing a new ride now, pop paid for tax and insurance, I make the monthly payments, and bro and I split the gas and maintenance.

Plan on saving for my own ride soon. Prolly a second hander manual sports coupe.

My parents bought me a 91 Olds Cutlass. Not the best car ever, but I am still grateful for it.

Kind of. My folks got me one for University because we live out of town and have to drive in to even catch the bus.

It's a 1988 Honda Prelude. It was a hand-me-down from my cousins (still had to pay for it) as both my cousin's had done some kind of major damage to it. And I continued that tradition by seriously messing up the rear end. Insurance write-off covered the repair costs :D so I'm still driving the thing. It's in their name, to avoid the insurance company essnetially bending me over and doing nasty things with the rates. I still pay for all gas and repairs (three major in the last 3 months).

Spoliled? Definelty not when I look around at what else is being driven on campus.

Nope, they couldn't really afford it...and even if they could...I wanted to make it on my own anyway. I think a card should be the first thing you have to work hard and save up for and then have to pay to look after and run it....it teaches you some good stuff to help prepare you for when you get a house.

I worked over a year at McDonalds part time while at college...sigh....worked hard too to save up over £1200 for my first car.

me = lucky (or some would call spoiled)
I drove a '94 civic when I was 17, and then last october my parents surprised me with a MB C230k. I am very happy with it. Unfortunately people don't like teenage asians with civics, they also don't like teenage asians with mercedes. I think I'm screwed unless I get a truck (but I think then the asians will make fun of me!!) LOL j/k :p

Nope, no car for me in high school. I'm 20, a sophomore in college, and still don't have a car. I'm hating the dependence, but I have to tell myself that the expense is overrated until I actually save up enough. Then I'll be singing a different tune.

I remember a few times that I borrowed my dad's car out of necessity or convenience. I remember one night driving his car to Wal-Mart to pick up an anti-virus program just to get my computer running to write a major paper due the next day. I remember using his car for off-campus lunches during senior year. Those were a few of the best days of my life. (I lived an hour from school and NEVER got to hang out with my friends except on such rare occasions. I savored every moment of it.) Specifically, I went to a Chinese buffet with my other fat friends (I weighed 225 then) and, on the days they couldn't go from bad grades, I ran out to Taco Bell and Hardees, making orders and bringing them back for them.

Damn, I already miss my high school friends. It's been only a year.

Kinda. I put $2000 towards it, and they paid the rest (got a '99 Mercury Sable, this is in 2000) but I was, at the time, working almost forty hours a week at our family business and getting paid for about a fourth of that. So 3/4 of the work I did went towards paying for my car. They paid insurance, and good thing they did, because I got rear ended and the car was totaled. Insurance bought me a '00 Grand Prix to replace it. I got to take my mom's place playing taxi to my three younger sisters too, which given the amount of stuff they do, is no mean task. My parents may have put the actual money towards it, but I feel like I paid for my car through my own work.
