Yes if you love the job it is. I don't know how to act today it was like a day off. 24 foot seas will do that. About 2/3 of the ship was sick. :Q

Thank gawd not any more. For most of my career, I wouldn't take a job if they were working less than 50 hrs/wk. I lived for my work...(stupid huh?)
I worked MANY jobs, where 6-10's were considered the NORMAL work week, and anything after that was considered overtime. (yeah, we got paid OT after 8, double after 10, x 1.5 for the 1st 8 on Saturday, then double after that, and double all day Sunday, but the culture of the job was that until you worked those 10 hr. days, it wasn't overtime...6-7 days per week...chasing the almighty dollar.
There were times I'd sleep in my truck for a couple of hours, and right back in the seat. Other times, grab a quick nap in a motel, then back at it again...
Refinery shut-downs were always 7-12's...made nice checks, (40 hrs straight time, 18 hours x 1.5, 26 hrs double time every week ~ $4000/week)
Working on the water always brought "tide work" pay, with double time for all hours before or after the "normal starting time".

I've come to the realization, there are 2 ways to get through life:

1) Live to Work.

2) Work to Live.

I think IF I ever rejoin the ranks of the working class, I'm gonna work to live. Fvck all the horrible hours, fvck traveling all over the country and being away from my wife/family...do my 40-50 and go home...

Nope. I don't see the point in becoming a workaholic.

I work for your standard for-profit corporation. I don't get much out of making more profit for someone else even if they end up paying me more as a "reward". Time is more important than money.

Not really. Most of the time all it does is stress you out, and that makes it hard to keep up. Better to take a break and then concentrate hard, take a break, concentrate hard, etc... rather than just working every last minute you can take it just to say you "worked".

Is my life about work? No way at all. My life is about hobbies and making myself happy. If making myself happy requires money, and that requires work, then so be it. But my life is not directly related to work.

I am sitting next to someone right now who has given notice, but is currently in my apartment, on VPN, doing work...

If working like that on what was supposed to be her last day doesn't count as a workaholic, I don't know what does.

I frankly don't understand how people ever become workaholics. It's just like.... how can work ever matter more than your enjoyment of life? It's not even like drugs, where you have the trade-off of getting high. Dunno... I'd shoot myself if I ever became a workaholic.

I was, but I was able to beat my addiction. It's been 4 years since my last job.

See, I actually like my job. I wouldn't call myself a workaholic just because I VPN in and work because I'm bored at 11:00 at night. I'm doing stuff I enjoy. And I work better at night than during work hours... no interruptions.

I just lack interest in other things. I enjoy my job and I enjoy finding ways to do things better.

There is probably a psychology to being a workaholic. It's either to escape not having a life, or to avoid having one.

I've thought about that one before. Sometimes I wish I had some extremely high-pressure, time-demanding job so I would have an excuse to not have to create a life outside of work. Unfortunately my career interests don't lie with any of those fields.

Yeah, you have to like your job. If I didn't like it, it wouldn't be on my mind all of the time.

I work when I have to. *shrug*

I don't mind working late or helping coworkers cover shifts, but if I don't have to stay late, I'm out the minute my shift ends (or earlier if it's slow :p).

don't tell that to my friends and family, though. hehe. I use work as an excuse whenever I don't want to do something ;)

I'd like to start laughing at the thought of being called a workaholic, though I seem to be more devoted to getting done what needs to be done than most. But I do it because it needs to get done, not because I feel compelled to keep myself busy.

When I'm not working, I find I do things just to keep my mind preoccupied. I've got one of those minds that just never shuts up, always thinking about something. Homework doesn't quite do the trick. It just feels so mindless - memorize equation, plug in numbers. Memorize equation, look up information in table, plug in numbers. Repeat numerous times. It doesn't matter if it's calculus or manufacturing design. And physics....the only reason I need that class is for the equations. The concepts are rather simplistic.

But when not doing homework, I tend to do things that just keep me occupied, to kind of quiet down my mind. An idle mind often leads me to depressed thoughts, so I prefer to just disable it with something like TV or Simcity4. SC4 is calming and provides a sense of order.

I guess I should otherwise be one of those workaholics who works to "escape not having a life" KingGheedora suggested, but I don't much care for work; I have yet to find something I really enjoy doing, so I just kind of keep myself in mental stasis for the time being.
Right now though, I sense that I'm getting a bit loopy. I had <6hrs of sleep every day this week, and every day I woke up almost exactly at 4am for no apparent reason, and I've been up for about 19hrs. <6hrs is not a good thing. Ever taken 2minutes to figure out the equation to calculate the area of a rectangle? That's what happens when I don't get enough sleep. Then I go onto ATOT and start long, rambling posts that might possibly make no sense whatsoever. :p

In conclusion: No, not a workaholic. If anything, I've got a somewhat European idea of how work should be. Work is what you do to enable you to do what you really want to do in life, which hopefully isn't work.

I wouldn't mind working 60hr+ weeks and actually love to work.. unfortunately I'm currently at a dead end job that doesn't utilize my potential and has a crappy 8hr slot of work that doesn't allow me to take any night classes cause of time conflicts. Can't wait to find a new job and quit this crap place I'm at.

I used to work a lot. Then one day I realized I was giving myself to the service of others that were making money off of me, while I was spending less time with my family. I finally stood up during a meeting about "doing what it takes to get the job done" and said "screw that. I'd rather work the time I'm SCHEDULED to work and spend the rest with my family- like I'm supposed to".

Funny how my workload and happiness level have changed after that. Now if I could just get people to asking me for stuff all the time, I'd be the happiest guy on earth.

Im the laziest person I know. I work 6 hours a day once a week. Being in school is fun, but gets boring and makes me lazy.

No, I think about work a lot as it is a family business and put in extra hours but I enjoy having a life/friends/relationships/interests.
