I bet there are some folks really hoping that helicopter pilot is anything other than a white Christian conservative male. They need the DEI hire excuse.

From some stuff I saw on r/avaition (relayed through social media) and repeated in the Boston Globe article quoted below, it sounds like the helicopter was under visual flight rules... I'm not an expert here, but that seems kind of dangerous to do near a runway approach at a busy airport at night.

"Less than 30 seconds before the crash, an air traffic controller asks the helicopter if it has the arriving plane in sight. The controller makes another radio call to the helicopter moments later: “PAT 25 pass behind the CRJ.” Seconds after that the two aircraft collided."
Uh yeah, depth perception suffers in the middle of the night while airborne.

info on crash, apparently quite a few US national figure skaters/coaches where on board

/2 Russian world champions as well

The FAA has no head after the current one resigned one year into their 5 year term, even though they were unanimously confirmed by the Senate. Musk was having beef with them for not getting launch permits fast enough. And I'm sure the FAA employees all got the same downsize email, since it was sent blindly with no regard for job functions... Not like ATC is stressful and has been understaffed for years now...

Mayor Bowser giving a press conference right now.

- No survivors found and it is now officially a recovery mission.
- 27 plane passengers found, 1 helicopter passenger found
- Fuselage is in 3 parts in waste high water for them to investigate

The landing aircraft was going for Runaway 33, which is seldom used. The helicopter might have been watching the planes going for Runway 01.

Good thing president shit for brains is on the case. I'm sure the Secretary of Defense, a bottle of Jack Daniels wrapped in a flag, will be providing the answers we all need.
I feel that the first team of Trump won't end the year due the upcoming issues.

While denizens of an online forum speculating on a recent tragedy without all the facts is to be expected, it is also expected that politicians and officials keep their yaps shut until they have something useful to say. Condolences would be appropriate. Speculating on causes is not helpful. The local fire chief knows this and practices this. Trump just can't stand the thought of something happening without his name involved. No class.

Those of us who can manage to remember 2020 might recall how he reacts in a crisis. This is all he's got.

Yes.

But also, everyone should be hanging everything around Trump's neck. This is also an information war.

If it was Hillary or Biden in charge the entire GOP and conservative media would be calling for investigations already.

They are already on Fox implying DEI might have caused the crash. Guess they should fire all the black/brown people at the FAA just to be safe.

A cast of total incompetents are being put into place across the top levels of the government. Naturally this is going to result in the freak show we are seeing in terms of responses but later it will start piling up a body count. Perhaps a really large one.

A circular firing squad of incompetence.

And now we have an administration filled with people who once had jobs blindly speculating on TV - that's going to work out great (exhibit A, Transportation Secretary telling us it is not standard to have aircraft collide).

Yes, we are basically getting a government of Fox News propagandists who have never had to do anything meaningful in their lives except bloviate about how bad Democrats are. They are going to fuck stuff up, potentially in huge ways.
