This surprised the hell out of me when I saw that there was a news/TV review today. Where were the trailers? I have the TV on nearly every second I'm home, and the only 'trailer' I saw was some other product commercial making a mention. Do they think they're that 'bad' they won't need to advertise...

I thought the whole point was that that first scene was 10 years later while the rest of the movie was a flashback. It explains why the kid was going to be hung (son of a pirate) and why he knew the song. If that was not the case, would it of hurt them to hire another kid for $10k?
You could be right however, as one of the characters they show (beckett?) is in that beginning scene when infact he dies (although, we only know he is left floating at the sea...no confirmation of death)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who got confused at some parts. I really thought the lead British military guy had some inside knowledge or something from the way he was acting, but he just froze up at the end. Kinda lame. The fight scene felt like they took every possible option they had thought of and decided to mush it together into one huge scene. Meh. Fun but too long imo. It became boring
Yea it can't be the same kid cuz the lead British bad guy was watching the execution. He said something like "it's about time" when they started singing.

I really liked it. But it was VERY confusing. Around half way , I found myself thinking, wait a minute, what happened the past hour?
But it was a very good movie, but a bit over dramatic. Especially that walk while the ship is disintegrating,
But I found a lot of stuff was left out. Like Calypso(That came and went in a flash), how the Pirate lords did NOTHING. They just sat there and cheered.
The Fight scene needed to be cooler(It was already cool)
Ending was decent, but unfullfilling. It just seems to try to be a closer, but at the same time, open up for a sequel.

Everyone (Jerry Bruckheimer, Orlando, etc.) says there will NOT be another POTC. But this thing is going to make $1 billion+ in global box office.
There will be another one. Jack is off to find the fountain of youth. Will is about to meet his son. Oh... there will be another one.

very dissapointed.
the whole overall plot was waaay to confusing. To me they could've done so much more. Her being the pirate captain gave me hope, calypso made it more interesting but neither actually had a great effect on the story. I thought the fact that the asian guy thought she was calypso would have some effect but it didn't.
The book guy being jack's father didn't really mean anything.
It all felt kinda empty even the fight scenes were lame. this was probably because it was so long. they had better make a sequel simply to tie up lose ends.

true, they just wanted to fit in jack's father as Keith Richards, though, since Depp modeled Jack Sparrow after him.
Did anyone see the Christian cross on the guy who shoots one of the "table of pirates" guy? Seamed really obvious to me that they put that in there for some reason. It was hanging in his hair on the right side of his face, and it was silver.

I thought it killed a bit of Jack's appeal, introducing his father. Jack Sparrow is this crazy pirate who roams the seven seas in search of whatever tickles his fancy at the moment. Giving him a mom and dad kind of made it seem...I dunno, it was like taking the lost boys out of Peter Pan's world. It kind of gave him a little more responsibility than I wanted his character to have; he wasn't independent anymore. But that was a small point.
The whole Calypso thing was kinda dumb. No comeback after she turned into a giant and then morphed into a million tiny crabs and make a whirlpool. And Elizabeth being made the Pirate King was pretty lame too. No real significant impact on the story line. The twist of events that led to her being King was kind of silly too, it was way too easy. Here is how I thought the story should have gone:
1. Intro stuff
2. Big fight
3. Calypso & Davey Jones hook up and get his curse removed
4. British Imperial head dude is a bad guy and gets creamed
5. Jack takes on Davey Jones' role and gets to sail forever
6. Will & Elizabeth get married
7. Everyone lives happily ever after
Was that too much to ask?
edit: for #4, I was really hoping the British guy had some deeper, darker ulterior motive. he seemed too confident to just be a really focused law enforcer.

I was disappointed. though more with spidey 3 than this. After the way pirates 2 ended I didn't expect a whole lot.
things that bugged me
Chow Yun Fat. He was totally worthless. All he provided as ship, crew, map and made elizabeth captain. yes you could say the map was a big deal but in the end he was useless. there was a big deal made about him being part of hte movie and he dies with about an hour or so left in the movie. More on useless characters later.
the voodoo lady, calypso or however you spell it. Umm she gets big, gets angry turns into craps and that's it.
jack's delusions once he was on the flying dutchman. i can see him going nuts when he was stuck in davy jone's locker? or whatever it is but why was he still going nuts.
the other world's pirates were well like chow yun fat's character totally worthless. they stood by a watch. there was no action from them other than infighting. Gathering of the world's pirates and most they did on their ships was raise flag then cheer.

I don't see how the beginning could be 20 years ago and the story being a flash back. didn't the little british guy order the suspension of various rights that most Americans should know and hung all those associated with pirates?
Jack has the map to was used to bring him back. Other than the voodoo lady who was set free no one knows how to bring the british guy back from the dead.
Letting Norrington, the guy elizabeth was supposed to marry from #1 come back seems more reasonable as he switched sides and helped elizabeth get off the flying dutchman.
I'm leaning towards the studio being cheap. pay the kid few thousand and they can film all his scenes in an hour or two at best. heck it wouldn't surprised me if it they put out a call for kids to work for free. capitalizing on the fact that some parents would do it figuring how big the whole pirates series has been.

The movie wasn't a flash back. It happened in real time. It was linear.
The song they were singing at the begining is what triggered the events that followed.
"The song has been sung"
The evil britt a-hole knew this. He was waiting for it. The pirates knew it too. The coin that the kid was holding when he was hung was collected and placed with other similar coins in the Btitt's office.
I don't know why/if they used the same kid in the reunion scene at the end or if he just looked like the kid at the beginning. Have to check the credits on the DVD... But either way, the story was linear... went from start to finish. I don't see how it was a flashback.
I looked up credits.
they list a kid named Dominic Scott Kay as a Young Will Turner. though I can't remember seeing flash backs where a young version of him would come in other than the end credit scene which I missed.
Brendyn Bell is listed as the cabin boy who was the one hanged.

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH just got back from the movie. That was HORRID. Seriously, it went on forever, Depp was more annoying than entertaining, the plot was frail, and did I mention it dragged on FOREVER
Personally I thought this movie was not only the best of the 3, but also one of the best movies I've seen in a while. I'm surprised to see a lot of people were disappointed.
saw it about three quarters of the way three, almost to the end actually. Then the projector in the theater freezes and "refuses to work" and we are all granted rain checks to the movie. that sucks. i havent seen the ending.
