Question Picking a new GPU

My RX 580 GPU somehow got fried. I don't think it's under warranty - it was shipped as an RMA over 2 years ago - so I probably need a new one. I have a nice Acer 34" freesync monitor, which pretty much limits me to AMD. 5700 XT is recommended. This is to go with an older Intel i7-4790, and ASRock Extreme6.

Gaming Nexus ranked them, and said XFX has the word, the best is gigabyte and Sapphire. Sapphire is looking a little better side by side. There are two on Amazon $50 apart, it's hard to tell the difference - only the ports?

I have a 5700 XT Nitro+, I have been super happy with it upgrading from an RX 480 Nitro+. This card is way quieter. I can actually play Witcher 3 maxed at 1080P/60 and the fans stay off most of the time. The fans almost never turn on during World of Tanks.

And even in games where it does kick the fans on, its significantly quieter than my RX480 was.

The Asus TUF 5700 XT is WAY worse than the XFX DD, not even close. Kitguru showed the Asus TUF 5700 doesn't have any cooling on the VRAM. The XFX has a bad cooler but the Asus TUF is just flat out defective.

Hardware Unboxed shows the Asus TUF 5700 XT and it's memory temperatures to be horiffic.

Thanks for the above comment, but can you tell me how it affects the selection of a 5700 XT (including the two I linked); and a broader recommendation on a card, hearing that Nvidia supports freesync (sadly, the expensive monitor is a few years old and has 1.0), not that I have any idea how 2.0 is better).

Budget? Usually like to get a 'sweet spot' card. The ones I linked around $400 (I have $50 off until tomorrow) seem appropriate, but big changes improving the value can change that.

I have an MSI RX 570 8GB, it has some visual glitches @ 4K, but I think that it's usable @ 1080P.

Send me $20 Paypal for shipping it, and it's yours.

Edit: Although, don't let my offer talk you out of a RX 5700 (XT) if you want one. I picked up a RX 5700 reference, and I like it a lot.

Edit: And for anyone else reading this, I believe Craig has me blocked. Tell him I'm sorry I'm a PITA sometimes, but I usually try to help.

Browsing a little, it looks like the 5700 XT and 2060 Super are very similar. The 5700 is a little better value and a little slower. The 'splurge' would be the 2070 Super, which for some reason is $500 at Nividia and $600 at amazon.

5700 is close to 2060 Super at $50 less with the 5700XT being on average 10% faster than 2060 Super and at the same price.

Sure the others say the same, but don't ever buy TUF or THICC from the 5700 series, and GN and Hardwareunboxed have both made comparisons after they tested practically every card, and you can choose from the best ones safely, depending on what you have on sale near or available to you.

I can compare sapphire 5700xt nitro+ with MSI GTX1080TI GamingX and 1080TI is way quieter.1080TI is dead silent with 2 fant around 1200RPM.
Sapphire 5700xt nitro+ fans are alot louder.I can hear them from 1200rpm and in games(1440p max) fan spin around 1600rmp and thats pretty decent vacuum cleaner:)
Also AMD have trash drivers.Tons of people with black screens/crashes averywhere.
NV cards have worse price/perf, but they works.I never had any driver crash/blackscreen for 7 years with NV.Since i switched to 5700xt a had tons of black screens.

God, what a quality advice to a question: which 5700XT is better -> 'stick with a 1080ti because myyy 5700XT kres, nvidi drajver never kres'...

Not sure why you are bringing up a 1080Ti in this thread.

However...

Every review I have looked at puts your MSI GTX1080TI GamingX as being louder under load than a 5700 XT Nitro+. And when not under load, the Nitro+ turns all of its fans off.

"Tons" of people having driver issues is a pretty significant stretch of the truth. The whole reason almost no media places talked about it, and why AMD has had trouble fixing them is because it only impacts a small number of people with specific configurations. We have a lot people on this forum with Navi cards, and only a very few have actually had the issues. I for instance, have had zero.

1080TI have similar TDP as 5700xt Nitro.I had both cards and MSI 1080TI is far quiter.I bringing it up because i had both cards.Sapphire 5700xt nitro+ is not super silent card.I have 2x 200mm@350rmp+2x120mm@400rpm+2xcpu 120mm@400rmp system fans and i can hear it from 1200RMP.In game with 1600Rpm i can hear it even with headphones on.

I will say, a quiet card is something I value, in selecting. I've always hated when fans compete with the game sounds, though headphones help, but better safe than sorry. I actually suspect that playing for years with loud fans in a previous PC cause tinnitus, but that's another issue.

I am aware of the black screen issue, a google search does not prove anything. Especially when most of them are with release drivers, not current drivers which are far more stable.

Its not like new drivers for a new architecture are always perfect. nVidia has outright bricked cards before. Both companies have had their issues.

1: If you've been happy with AMD, and the 5700xt is cheaper, that would be a tough sell for me to switch over. Given the need to check if NVIDIA is compatible with your display.

2: I would use prior generations for the Pulse and Nitro series to get an idea of what to expect between the two cards.
Beside that, shouldn't Sapphire have a page or something for comparison?
Someone who might be their rep is on a show talking about the comparison for the prior gen.

There are reviews of both the Pulse and Nitro+. The obvious differences are that the Pulse has two fans and is much shorter, and the Nitro+ has three fans and is full length.

The pulse is a more budget offering, and will fit in smaller cases. The length of the Nitro+ actually limits it to larger cases. Even some mid towers cannot accept it.

well all he needs is a freesync card, 1080ti will do that, thats exactly what i recommend too. unless you are a die hard AMD fan i dont understand why anyone would purchase one. And YES SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING issues with their cards, not me of course because i havnt purchased a amd card since the 270x and it still runs fine in a pc i gave away.

Sorry, somebody asking to buy a *NEW* card should not be pointed at buying an old used card. And again, "many" is an indeterminate guess.

The difference between FreeSync 1 and 2 is not a big deal. FreeSync2 is more like a certification than a new standard. It means that the monitor meets certain standards. Many older monitors that aren't labeled "FreeSync2" can still meet that standard. The major issue is that in theory a 60Hz monitor can have it but won't see much benefit. If FPS are below a certain threshold, FreeSync can't work unless the monitor's max refresh is rated at least 2.5 times higher than it's minimum refresh. In practice, that means a freesync display with a max refresh rate under 120 can't use FreeSync when FPS are low.

If you get a 5700 XT and are gaming at 1080p, this is not a problem because FPS won't be low for a few generations of games, at least.

I think you're going to be fine with either Gigabyte or Sapphire cards. I would note that the Sapphire is wider/shorter while the gigabyte is narrower/longer in 3 fan config; make sure the cards will fit your case! Despite only 2 fans, the Sapphire looks like it has excellent cooling. I know, because I can't afford either right now and am very ready to replace my GTX 970 now that I have a 1440p monitor: I browser window shop video cards and read reviews a lot.

@Craig234 you may have missed it, virtual larry offered to send you an RX570 as a replacement for the cost of shipping. he also said he's sorry he's a butt sometimes.

The more expensive 5700XTs perform the same (+/- 1-2%) as every other 5700XT so the reason to get one over the other is price or some non-performance related feature, such as looks, lighting, or dual BIOS.

I went with the lightly reviewed Red Dragon ($410). Hardware Unboxed finally got their hands on one at it was small, cool, quiet, and had dual BIOS.

As long as you stay away from any of the trash fire cards, you should be okay.

Red Dragon and Red Devil from PowerColor. Pulse and whatever the more expensive card is from Sapphire. Gigabyte has a good and cheap card.

I really like mine. 10% or so faster than a 2060S and the 1440p performance is stellar. What makes the card such a good buy, to me, is that 1440p/144Hz monitors are the sweet spot of monitors and the 5700XT is an excellent card to drive such a monitor.
