I didn't mention Big Rigs at all. Not sure why you're replying with this.

It's because you said don't yell at me when you suggested Euro Truck Simulator, which implied to him (and to me) that you thought I hated all truck games. He was pointing out that I referenced Big Rigs because it is crap, not because it is a truck/racing game.

I apologize for any confusion I caused by referencing Big Rigs, was trying to avoid getting suggestions of crap just to mess with me. :D

So, does anyone want to break the tie between the four 4 vote games below?

Defense Grid
Faster Than Light
Stalker
Dark Souls

Have my internet up and running now, so will be buying the game today/tonight.

I'm gonna be that guy and muck it up more. I've put more than 100 hours in Fallout: New Vegas, so I'm going to vote that.

Haha, no problem; appreciate you taking the time to vote. So now it's a five-way tie for first place!

Defense Grid
Faster Than Light
Stalker
Dark Souls
Fallout: New Vegas

I've got to say, I don't think any of those are the best pick. I'd play SotS: The Pit before FTL, which I didn't find much fun, for a roguelike. I'd play Divinine Divinity's new game before Dark Souls easily. From what I hear, Titanfall might be a lot better than stalker for an FPS. It even seems a little silly for my pick of Total Annihilation with 4 votes to get the most votes (but I'd play tit before these except maybe Fallout NV). I don't think this voting has given a good list of the games with the most votes.

Divinity: Original Sin and Dark Souls are not alike. Nor are Titanfall and Stalker, so I don't know why you are directly comparing them.

Even so, I would still recommend playing the latter over the former in both cases.

Defense Grid - Zero minutes played, no opinion.
Faster Than Light - immense fun, like Rogue Legacy where death and failure are very regular but loads of replayability
Stalker - one of the best game series ever made, nice long in-depth game with lots of immersion. This one gets my vote.
Dark Souls - Played only a few hours of this, not enough for a real opinion, don't have much positive or negative to say other than lots of other people like this

Ok, thanks TC. So that would put Stalker as the winner. Should I just restart the original, or should I play the more recent version. Or maybe the original with mods or something?

I'd vote the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as well, with mods, followed by the other two in order of release. My all-time favorite game is probably Fallout: New Vegas, but it needs a LOT of modding work to be a great game. With the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, one or two mods make them near-perfect, so you can get to actually playing much more quickly. Time for the rewarding but lengthy Fallout modding marathons after you've logged some play time.

Also, the Fallout games with mods provide hundreds of hours of game play each; starting with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games allows you to more quickly work in some variety.

I'd suggest playing the series in order so you'll know what's going on.

Yes, there are some must-have mods but as long as vanilla is patched up to 1.0004 or 5 then you'll be fine.

Check out Zone Reclamation Project; it's a community-driven bug fix.

If you must have mods on the first play through, check out the Complete mod which is basically ZRP with a few graphical tweaks.

now it's a five-way tie for first place!

Defense Grid loved it; although, i can't see him getting that many hours from it. chasing the gold medals seems less important to me than beating the game.

Faster Than Light although i admit i have said bad things about this space-gambling simulator, i have found myself playing it more and more often. it's a game that you will enjoy if you stay after the brutal first impact.

Stalker *if* played with the COMPLETE mod, then stalker is by far one of the best games ever made.

Dark Souls never played, but i remember my rommate's love/hate relationship with this game. he was always either screaming murder, or screaming victory.

Fallout: New Vegas well, it was ok, but not *that* great. much better than F3 but still flimsy engine and so-so writing.

FTL, Stalker and Dark Souls all take some effort to get into. So, for fear of disappointing, i will vote Defense Grid.

Just so it is clear, I have played the original Stalker before and I found it extremely boring, but that was shortly after it came out and before any sort of mod. I have no problem trying it again though, since people obviously seem to love it.

System Shock 2. It's on GoG now, and should run from the get go (but there are texture packs that will make it look less...dated.)

The Saboteur, this game was honestly a hidden gem, overlooked by so many PC gamers and console gamers alike. Its Mafia meets GTA in a WW2 setting, right in the beautiful city of Paris. Its got great voice acting, cut scenes, beautiful music, great characters, and a beautiful stylistic depiction of Paris. Its shooting mechanics are pretty solid and the game itself runs and plays really well. More people need to give this game a try, I honestly really enjoyed it.

I agree about the Complete mod; it makes Clear Sky actually enjoyable and enhances the other two.

I think Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3 are great games, but they absolutely need mods to be great games. Otherwise they are the Lindsay Lohan of games - they may seem desirable, but are essentially hot messes. Unless your idea of a brutal firefight involves simultaneously skyping with a non-gamer while eating a sandwich anyway, which with VATS is perfectly possible.

Oh, and if you REALLY want to go balls out in STALKER, check this mod out:

Man, I was so excited about Lost Alpha and absolutely hated it. I found it the most boring, amateurish take possible, like a mod that would take a fully modded Fallout game and change it back to its initial ugly, unstable bullet sponge game.

So which Stalker am I buying? Is it Shadow of Chernobyl? Seems to be the oldest one, but is also the most expensive, which is weird.

KT

Edit: looks like it. Strange that it is double the price of the other games.

Thanks Sphinx; I think I already own Dark Souls, so I will give it a shot after I play some Stalker. Bought Stalker and installed the mod last night, so should be able to give it a go by the weekend.

DayZ intrigues me. :hmm:

Well said! It's a love/hate journey with this game. You'll venture forth and have fun and all until you get killed by a skeleton because you got cocky. Then you'll restart from the start of the level and fight your way through it all...rinse and repeat until you finally manage to find the next bonfire.

The feeling of immense satisfaction and relief when you make progress in this game is unmatched by any other game.

Dragon Age: Origins is free on Origin right now so you can always pick that up as well. Can't go wrong with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. though, it may have the best atmosphere of any game I've ever played.

Yeah I grabbed Dragon Age last night, thanks. Can't go wrong with a free game! :awe:
