dayz intrigued me as well, but the vibe i get from various posts and anderzel's videos is that it just isn't good enough and improvements have come to a stand-still.

Hmm, strange. Has the player base dwindled? I thought it was relatively new, so expected they would keep it up to date, at least in the short term.

Way back in the Mod DayZ, I played it constantly for 6 weeks and loved the atmosphere of it. However, it became apparent that the game was just a long path to being just a DM game. Once I realized that I lost interest. From all that I hear nothing has changed with the standalone.

Stupid Stalker crashes every time I change the resolution to my native res. Makes a giant black box in the top left of my screen and I cannot shut the program down; I have to manually turn off the PC each time. Very annoying and I really do not want to play at their default resolution. :\

Edit: figured it out. Had to disable the Steam overlay.

The mod for ArmaII is actually the far more polished game. It seems like the "standalone" dev team has completely lost focus and are worried about adding a bunch of garbage elements despite not having the fundamentals even close to finished. I think they take too much advice from the public. Either way though you can ruin someone's day by killing them once, so this game has the highest tension of any FPS/TPS imo.

Sooo, what's the point of this stupid Stalker game. Walk a few yards, completely miss killing a dude even though you have walked up right behind him and shot him in the head, then have a swarm of Russian dudes kill you. Rinse, repeat?

Good. Freaking. Times.

The point is to follow the storyline that focuses on the entity named Strelok. There are a ton of side missions. There are factions; you can join any one of them or you can choose to stay a loner. The military doesn't generally like you and I don't think you can side with them.

In replaying this game because of this thread, I'm noticing a lot of shots that are not registering even though I can see the damn tracer go through the head.

The Stalker games aren't really twitch shooters. They're more methodical shooters, but I still find myself wasting a lot of ammo with repeated shots that should have been a kill the first time.

Oh, and guns aren't all that accurate, either. They're quite unrealistically inaccurate, even on the first shot. The first shot should be dead on, but the weapons end up sending slugs down trajectories that are physically impossible out the barrel.

I feel like I'm playing Stalker with an E-11. :awe:

The standalone is worse. MUCH worse. There are bugs that didn't exist in the mod, a lot of them, and they haven't been fixed. I bought the standalone when it came out and was promised update time and time again but nothing done so far. Even when the two original modders had a tantrum together and one of them stepped down, the parent company advertised a big patch coming up a month later... that still has yet to be seen.

I gave up on it and will likely never install it again.

Yeah, after I posted I just started trying to be super stealth and it worked out. I cleared the first area without too much difficulty. I guess I just did not realize it was more of a stealth type game, at least to start with. I'm ok with it now that I realize it's what I need to do, was just frustrated dying over and over and over. :D

I agree with you on Stalker, a lot of people seemed to like it but I never cared much for it. It seemed to have super-realistic damage and I'd always end up dead in minutes. Maybe I'll give it another try sometime.

Yeah that's exactly my boat right now. I now remember why I quit the game the first time around, but I am trying to just relax and take it in slowly. We'll see if I stick with it.

Heh, thanks. Played another 20 minutes; after a few more deaths I quit and went to play TF2.

I have a feeling Stalker is just not for me.

Download Path of Exile, you know you want to. It also has the coolest (and craziest) skill tree screen ever. :)

Well I may get to that one soon. :D

I tried playing Stalker and was really turned off by the horrid UI/menu's and sound effects.

Ugh, you're right, the UI does suck. It's so clunky when trying to just pick things up, or manage your weapons. Maybe it is trying to be realistic or something? I don't know, but it definitely makes the game slightly less enjoyable.

I remember playing stalker when it first came out. I tried to like it, but it was so bland and boring. I like stealth games and I like FPS games, but it felt unpolished and aimless. I think if you'd like an older FPS experience, then give FEAR a try. I remember it being kind of fun and its a fast game, so you do not have to dedicate 20+ hours to it.

I played FEAR when it came out and really enjoyed it. Never tried any of the sequels.

Stalker is starting to grow on me a little bit. I've played for about two hours now and I think I am finally starting to get the hang of things. The atmosphere is growing on me and even though I still think the interface is very clunky, I am at least starting to have a bit of fun.

Havent played any of your top contenders, but I can happily recommend

Wasteland 2
Fallout 3 & New Vegas (Skyrim as well)
Kerbal Space Program
Total Annihilation
Minecraft

Really it just depends on what you feel like playing with

If you want something like the original fallout or wasteland, then wasteland 2
If you want post apocalyptic first person, then new vegas or FO3, if you want first person with fantasy setting, Skyrim...

If you want a sandbox game for tinkering with stuff, Kerbal or Minecraft is good

And if you want old fashioned RTS, Total Annihilation is the best of the best.

Oh, good to hear that you're starting to enjoy Stalker. __________________

I really enjoyed Stalker series. Played from original discs, and then Stalker complete mods. I had no trouble with any of them, though IMO the best one is SOC with COP a close second. Acquire money and anomolies, upgrade weapons and if in doubt, peruse a walkthrough.
