so you are saying that based on that obscure site? lol. look at the more well regarded sites and the Thuban X6 is no better than the old X4 was. the i7 is the much better cpu for gaming according to real review sites. hell the i5 is still the best bang for buck setup for best game experience.

Are they comparing overclocked results? Remember, you want to aim for 60 frames, then any additional power won't matter.

If i remember correctly Anand used stock cooling and didn't really push the vcore that much. If you buy this with the intent of overclocking it i bet you'll get an aftermarket cooling solution and push the vcore even higher and 4.0 ghz plus will be possible.

Well, I kind of disagree. The whole point of this chip is that its a cheaper alternative to the i7 with slightly less performance. Upgrade to a non-stock heatsink and you lose the price edge.

Heh, the question I have is why AMD didn't do 6 cores with no L3 to lower prices even more!

why fool with butchering it that much? they already have so many products many of which overlap in performance and price.

@Hacp

this

AMD kept the prices low imo. I mean you getting a 6 core cpu for $199 and another for $285

I'm sure they'll get around to that eventually, if they see a market for it. It took them awhile to release Propus chips (Athlon II X4s) as well, so just give it time.

Lost Circuit

I'm waiting for TechReport's review, but so far I am rather impressed with what AMD has done here.

You mean 6-cores for 4-core performance most of us have had for 18 months? This product reminds me a lot of the Pentium-D.

Then: "Hey! We(Intel) have a dual-core too...it's just much slower and not power efficient..."
vs.
Now: "Hey! We(AMD) have a hexacore too...it's just much slower and not power efficient..."

Was Pentium D 1/3 the Price of its' Competition?

Anand needs to start doing proper OC analysis. Not going past 1.4v? Stock cooling? No benchmark info? Next to useless :|

agree with you, they felt the need to give the X980 a second run so it's only fair that they do a proper oc test on Thuban. If 3.8ghz was achieved on stock cooling and 1.4v i think 4.0-4.2 is possible.

ComputerBase (German)

It's a very comprehensive review with lots of applications. Interesting that it performs slightly better on 790FX than on 890FX.

I haven't built a system in a while so this is going to sound stupid. Will any AM3 motherboard support Phenom II x6 cores? I was about to buy the 3 Ghz Phenom II x4 for $150 at newegg for the system I'm building using this GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AM3 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128397

But if I can get a Phenom II x6 2.8 for the same price, and it will work with the motherboard then I will buy it.

Should work on most boards with a bios update. The only way it would not work is if there has not been an update for it but I would bet Gigabyte will have updates for all their AM3 boards.

All AM3 Mobos should support it, especially from Gigabyte and the other quality Manufacturers.

Yeah but the C3 revision has gotten over the 64-bit hump.
Interesting. Is there anything published about that? I don't keep up with CPUs too much, but it has always sounded like the low clockspeed limit when in 64bit mode was something that wasn't going to be fixed until Bulldozer.

$50 rebate on either. that's a great deal considering that newegg is selling 1090 at $309 at the moment.

I think 1.38v is fine, this is 6 cores, lot of heat.
