I never cared about the guy myself, never watched him personally but he's had a large following awhile now of course.

Hope he has been investing.

Yea I never got why he became so famous. I'd watch him do a gameplay of some scary games and he would just scream like a toddler most of the time.

My nephew watches him. Dude is like, a really big deal with 7-12 year-olds.

I personally think It's a pretty stupid thing to wonder why someone likes him. We all have different opinions about what we like and no all his fans aren't kids. I'm 26, my boyfriend is 30. We love him. Our friends love him too, he's just funny to watch because he doesn't give a shit. Only you-tubers I watch are Dashie, dunkey, pewds, manly and sometimes mark and yanderedev. We just pop the vids on and laugh while we cuddle in bed and live our happy lives. I'm sure the things you like are hated by other people so I just find it weird to ask such a question. As for this, I dunno I can't take jokes seriously enough to rag on someone, and good for him for all his success despite all the hateful people out there.

Rude jokes in the workplace can get you fired. That's why I just keep to myself.

In regard to PewDiePie he'll be fine. He's not going anywhere. With nearly 60m subs he is the biggest YT personality by far. Yes, he did tarnish his brand which wasn't smart. But, if he just does his thing this will all blow over.

Exactly.

I've noticed that people usually make assumptions based on what they do for leisure, work, etc. And how they were brought up. Instead of trying to see why someone likes something thru their perspective, we start dismissing it because we think it's stupid or weird. Hell, there are people who think posting on forums are a waste of time.

Why is Pewds popular? I think he got in at the right time and he was good enough to be successful. We don't get to choose whose going to be popular or not. That is up to the market. The market always makes the choice.

His "thing" is not being smart though. He is immature which is exactly who his target audience is.

“No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.” -Henry Louis Mencken

I like his epitaph too: "If, after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to please my ghost, forgive some sinner and wink your eye at some homely girl."

I find it funny how uninformed everyone is on this.

I don't support Pewdiepie or whatever, and I have NEVER watched a SINGLE video from him since I'm not the target audience... but this is a clear cut case of the media misconstruing and trying to chop someone that is taking from them. Every single thing is a joke that was taken out of context.

I highly suggest looking at this stuff from Phillip DeFranco that is reporting on it often: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtlDC1sZFSg

News media is dying, Youtubers are rising and crushing them. This guy has 50 million SUBSCRIBERS. You think that many people subscribe to the Wallstreet Journal?

I heard an observation recently which puts it all in context.

Modern day journalism is about interrogating people. Especially with tight deadlines and low pay, there are subtle incentives to do quick and dirty hit pieces which grab attention and are fairly easy to make. This is why most reasonable people don't like talking to journalists, because the journalist if he isn't on "your side" and we all know what side that is, will always be interrogating you trying to get you to say something related to race or whatever that he can pin as evil and scary.

Careful analysis in contrast is about taking the time to listen to people and try and see what is missing in their perspective. There isn't so much of that anymore.

Journalism IMO has suffered a steep decline with the rise of Facebook. Now, people don't even bother writing letters to the editor.

It's insane how crazy popular he is, I may have potentially watched some of his videos, but not really more than that. He kinda got lucky really as there are tons of vlogs out there, he was just one of the first that got recognized so well. As for losing the sponsors, people are too sensitive these days and can't take jokes. I'm sure Pewdiepie could not care less, and probably even things it's hilarious as it just shows how much even professional organizations can be cry babies.

What's interesting is that it seems people are more sensitive on the internet than in real life. Racist jokes and stuff IRL are not really a big deal. But on the internet, all hell breaks loose.

Not quite a far comparison, as it is free to subscribe to youtube channels. WSJ costs money.

I agree some people are too sensitive but not in this case. Genocide is not funny and never makes for a good joke. Only completely immoral dbags or immature nitwits with no real sense of humor think it's funny.

YouTube subscribers are typically quite fickle, which isn't a big surprise considering the subscriptions are completely free.

Anyways, I'm happy to see people out there calling out idiots like this.

Uh, what are you talking about? If anything, in my experience, a lot more stuff is tolerated online than it is in real life in most situations. But then again, I don't hang around with 10 year-old gamers.

Seems to depend on the topics. Online it seems religion bashing is more tolerated, but anything pertaining to racist jokes or LGBT related jokes is usually a HUGE no no. But IRL at work and other places we joke about stuff like that all the time and it's not really a big deal. Most of the jokes that come out would probably be bannable at most online places like here. IMO true racism is when you actually HATE a certain race. Just making a joke is not the same as hating. We still agree with equal rights and all that stuff.

Sorry, Kim's body is hideous.

While you might think her body's hideous it's literally the only reason she's famous. Nobody cares about her political views or a single damn thing she has to say or anything else about her.

His fame was the result of YouTube's algorithm for listing their "Trending" a long time ago. There's a few videos that go into detail how the algorithms were programmed that lead to his fame. Essentially, YouTube's programming made him famous simply because of where he lives - ie. he got lucky.

How can the most famous youtuber with almost 60 million subscribers only earn $12 million a year?

im not saying thats a small ammount, but man someone that famous should be not less then hundred millions $ per year..
