It makes me wonder about the environment in Sweden right now. If there is a right wing resurgence there.

I like his youtube vids. They're pretty mindless shit and that's why I usually go to youtube for anyway. A few minutes of absolute nonsense that can make me chuckle.

I never understood the fun of this guy, but he's not even joking about jews, he paid two indians to hold up that message and just made a face. Where is the joke?

Other people do racist jokes but they don't make any money from it, they just have anonymous twitter accounts and troll people, that's it. He should have been able to think about the difference between that and being a disney-sponsored entertainer.

i was confused too why this blew up when it just looks run of the mill internet trolling, could have basically applied to any ethnic group. Of course that implies normalization of anti-semitism which is entirely wrong, but not sure if these fits into a legitimate theme/trend. I feel there is a difference between playing on a stereotype or a historical event, and truly taking it to heart (i.e. making a joke about muslims, vs genuinely wanting to ban muslims).

Maybe its because he was getting to be a big media personality.

Either way as long as he is willing to only live like he makes 1 million a year, and does some investments, he is good for the rest of his life.

Yea I'm pretty sure with all the money he's gotten, if he's smart enough he should be fine. It wouldn't be surprising to see a documentary of him like so many others that got rich quickly and lost it all soon.

If you watch the video and consider the jokes in context, they're not nearly as bad as the media has made them out to be. He could probably have delivered the same message with a slightly different joke, but I don't think the jokes were so over the line that he needed to face this kind of backlash. He was making the point that fiver is causing people to act even worse than usual by allowing people to ask others to do often ridiculous and humiliating things for five dollars. I'm not necessarily defending him, but the context is very important I think.

Like, I get that, but still, why couldn't he have make it an innocuous and equally ridiculous message like "death to all hamsters" or something like that.

Also, there appears to be a pattern of winking racism? In multiple videos? Right now his mug is on the new-Nazi site dailystormer.

Sounds as if it's just that he's not that clever or sophisticated and doesn't have any sensitivity about the topic. Rather than having far-right sympathies.

I mean, it's not a million miles away from what Sasha Baron Cohen did in Borat (and that upset a few people, but he got away with it). But this is just clumsier and less clever in what point it was supposed to be making (also, I suppose Cohen got far more benefit of the doubt due to being Jewish himself). My first thought is he's a clumsy amateur trying to do what the professionals do and missing the critical finer points and so getting into a bit of trouble.

I'm not a fan of Baron-Cohen, come to that. But he was smart enough to avoid this level of self-damage.

He's a dumb kid who's never had to grow up, and he's popular enough for such jokes to bite him in the ass. He can blame the media all he wants, but he still did it. He's never had to learn what's appropriate because he's never had to grow to and be an adult.

His fan base is 98% pre-teen. Sponsors are getting hosed.
98%? are you sure? I thought 99.9% fan base is pre puberty teens. That 1% is himself. I can't stand idiots like him.
Sad that he is Swedish. I am Swedish too I am ashamed.

Don't be ashamed, be proud! For if not for PDP, I would not know of any other Swede in the public eye.

Some other source said he's done 9 videos with "jokes" like this in the past like 6 months, so him trying to dismiss the backlash as fake news and blaming the media makes him look even more like he's pushing an agenda or playing to a pretty specific audience.

I certainly can't say if he is or isn't an "alt-right" asshole or being yet another dipshit who thinks they're making a statement about political correctness or whatever horseshit assholes use when they try to defend doing stuff like this, but there's more to this than he's letting on.

Maybe its just some stupid act of rebellion, maybe its more. But its basically a mix of everything that makes the modern world irritating.

I don't watch his videos but I did watch his apology vid. To me he came off as a child that got caught doing something bad. He doesn't seem genuinely apologetic and the only time he shows emotion is talking about the media and fans that supported him.

He complains about the media targeting him but that's what happens when you're at the top. He's low hanging fruit with enough fringe evidence to write up a smear piece.
That's what happens when you're famous.

If the guy has never had to act like an adult this is a wake up call to the real world. If the average man said something like that in the work place he would suffer the consequences. Why he thought he would be held to different standards is beyond me.

TL -DR
He had it coming

Except he's more of a comedian of sorts. Any and all jokes are open and fair game. Sure some people may not like them and you may lose fans/money, but what the WSJ did was, as it seems to me, is libel. They probably made that article with the intentions of smearing his character, possibly hurt his livelihood, and most important, generate more clicks for the WSJ. The article was behind a paywall after all.

You can argue bad taste, rude, uncalled for, and asshole jokes all you want, but that's your opinion. It says nothing about him actually being, in this case, an antisemite. What happened to news articles that did research and brought good proof. Not clips or sentences taken out of context and then have a whole new angle put on them by the article author.

My point is: making untasteful jokes in the workplace could result in a financial consequence.
