not in every state

I'm quite sure that it's implied that we're only discussing this in the context of the states in which it IS illegal.

I'm waiting patiently for one of these pedo's to pull out a .357 and off Chris Hansen. Now that will be ratings gold. :D

No matter how bad the perverts are, no matter how you look at it, it's a sick form of entertainment.

Jeez... Only in America could a pedophile be made out to be the victim. Good riddance.

Agreed, good riddance. Forget the kids he's chasing around, this guy's the real victim. Maybe he only went after the pedophiles so hard so he could learn where they found their victims.

maybe he was just REALLY into the evidence...

The obvious question is why is the legality different from state to state? Are 16 year old girls more mature in some stats than others? I don't think so.

Because the founding fathers decided that each state should govern itself and wrote it into the United States Constitution?

Dont be so closed minded. Lots of good replies in this thread arguing for, against and indifferent. You cant talk about it if no one brings it up.

And I think NBC needs to pull the plug on this fiasco. The decoys will still decoy and perps will get busted. The sun will rise tomorrow.

Deal or no deal?

That DA wasn't a victim. He made his choices of his own free will, and so be it.

Sense of Entitlement - FTL

But working in CJ, you find that most sex offenders are actually regular Joes that have a slightly twisted mindset, usually spurred by a poor outlook on their own life. These people do need to be helped, but prevention the best solution.
If communities and churches (temples... whatever) were more open to the idea of helping out people who struggle in these aspects and show them how inherently wrong it was while still accepting them as a person, a lot of these people would slowly be changed. Sadly, this does not happen. Communities and churches stigmatize these people as totally different from everyone else (which usually they are not), and the people themselves also do not wish to change. A sad predicament, which would only be changed if someone was willing to lead out some type of outreach for these people.

On the other hand, when they commit the crime, they deserve justice. That is all.

wait a minute! Aren't the churches and temples where these kids often get molested by people of power? Wouldn't the pedo just have more opportunity to participate in such crimes?

Yeah, it seems like they are going for sensationalism and borderline entrapment.

Does anybody know what the D.A. actually did? It says in the op that he didn't show up to the trap house, so what did he do? I've never seen the show (it sounds horrible). What's the set up? How do they advertise the bait? What did he do wrong that could get him arrested even though he didn't demonstrate an intention to have sex with the bait by travelling to the bait's house?

edit: I read the link and I guess he did "solicit sex." I'd still like to know exactly how he did this.

That show sounds really disturbing.

what I find crazy is there are still I believe 2 states where the legal consent age is 14, 14!?! We should have ONE age for the entire US, isn't there a state where 13 is legal? 14 is illegal in California, and to me it's just wrong! Even if I lived in one of the few states where they considered a 14 year old mature enough to make decisions about sex. I would say "that's sick!"
our country is ass backwards.

our country is ass backwards.

For thousands of years.. for hundreds of generations, including the ancestors of many of the people living in the United States and including many millions of people currently living in other countries in the world, they would disagree with you.

What basis do you have to call them "sick"????? Just because the social norm NOW in the United States is for later marriage and I'm assuming a later "age of consent"... are you going to label everyone who doesn't believe what you believe "sick"?

Don't be the ugly American...

I think a 30 year old with a 14 year old is sick and wrong, I don't care if that state has a consent age of 14. I don't judge people, but I have my limits. Hundres of years ago living to be 40 was a long life so people got married in their teens. I don't have a problem with a consent age of 16-17 but 14? that's a child, there has to be a line where it's just plain wrong.

But I see your point, who am I to say a person is sick for doing it, especially if in that state a 14 year old is old enough *shrug*
