I'm expecting the Chinese rover to build a 1 meter sq. artificial island on Mars IATD (Immediately After Touch Down) and claim the planet for itself.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the CCP used the platform for propaganda somehow. Daily updates from Mars or something.

"I am honored to proclaim China's indisputable and historical rights to Mars!"

"Foreign powers should stay away to preserve peace and stability."

"Those Uighur women were already sterile."

Just occurred to me that for billions of years Mars was untouched by any life form and only recently did humans decide to start dumping garbage on it.
Oh well.

oh? It's all fun and games until this thing starts sending back photos of black goo containers

It's amazing to me just how many things have to go perfectly for the "sky crane" method to even work, the track record for Mars landings is not even 50% success and we just landed a rover the size of a small SUV without so much as a scratch on her, all done autonomously no less, great job NASA engineers!.

NASA's track record for Mars landers and orbiters in the past 2 decades is 100%. JPL is amazing.

JPL was landing on Mars long before SpaceX was landing on Earth. that being said, i look forward to the day that SpaceX lands on Mars.

Sure, I was thinking about using rockets to slow down descent.

The helicopter the rover carries sent a message to earth relayed through the MRO. It appears to be functional and undamaged, but they haven't tried to fly it yet. Pretty cool.

According to your linked article, it won't fly for a month or two....and won't even detach from the rover until the copter's batteries have been charged sufficiently enough to allow the copter to "live" independently from the rover, as once the copter detaches from the rover's belly, it's completely on its own.

As an aside...from what I understand, the Perseverance rover is built mostly from Curiosity's spare parts. Waste not, want not...and that was how NASA "afforded" the Perseverance rover.

Yep, the RTG for the rover is 110 watts only, which just barely powers the rover's functions. Anything that has to be charged will take awhile.

Hopefully in my lifetime well be able to have automated greenhouse on Mars, starting the seeding process for creating a luscious green planet.

I just want a trampoline center on Mars: bouncy, bouncy, bouncy.

That would be quite the sight. Given the exponential nature of technology, I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility

Mars has no magnetosphere to protect from radiation and the atmosphere is extremely thin, a "luscious green planet" is a fantasy.
