Oh the edits

First, I write for a living. Also counsel people. Anyone who does the former professionally gets 70% is all about editing, which is a daunting ongoing process, and the product of a dynamic, focused sensibility. We are not software, nor, should we aspire to be software.

As for the rest, I have no say over if the person at the other is a seeker, is open and might harvest what I offer, not one which I come to cavalierly.....but I stand by what I posted re your sad (even embarrassing) and inelegant, weenie wagging throwing down.

Being a real authority is polar opposite of being authoritarian. The latter always speaks desperation and insecurity.

Having said that, I reiterate my sincere gratitude for, at least, the accurate data you offered.

Again, it's not where you go, it's how you travel and where you are coming from, that marks everything.

Ponder.

Please be more specific on where I am authoritarian, sad, insecure and desperate, because if you rate people based on if they tell you only what you want to hear than you will see most people like that.
If you want to accuse me that I was not ever enough nice to you, than it's only because you were not nice to me in the first place.
Sometimes is just better to listen to others, and face the truth, not everyone who is disagreeing with you on some subject is there to blame you, or hurt you in any way, it's just you don't know everything, so don't I and probably everyone else, we only know something and have limited capacity we can work with, that however doesn't mean we can't learn new things and expand our knowledge either alone or with help from others.

K....I feel U. But I explored this inside, and thing is, Matt, what I am about is always delving, learning, chasing clarity until I own clarity and UNDERSTANDING. It's who I am, it's what i do by default.

I was born this way. Ask my mom.():)

And, there is a little light, blinking on the desktop in my head urging me to chase data until I can get clear on this. It is actually not just about wanting normal system beeps which I still do, it is about the former.

That, is dead on accurate.

So, when I can, I plan to chat with another fine Dell techie, given now, I have arrived at the core question: In this system, does the buzzer (#15), require an internal speaker installed (#8) to make normal system beeps?

Period. And if the answer is yes, then I might just get one of the many OEM ones I see on ebay. Then, the lite in my brain will stop blinking.:sneaky:

Remember, had I not spoken with...well, chatted with Sandra, I would no way have known about the new bios update (A14).....cause it does not appear on their official download page for this system. I thought she was fabulous.:D

Oh believe me I am all for chasing a problem to it's core and implementing a solution but if I was tech support I would probably hang up on you.

Oh believe me I am all for chasing a problem to it's core and implementing a solution but if I was tech support I would probably hang up on you.

So understandable, the, you do not, in fact get paid to do high end tech support! Forget, thank God!

See below via one of the all time greats who does get paid to do that very thing.....just in, and with ALL THE ACCURATE DATA.....Kyle at Dell, got up and TESTED THE IDENTICAL SYSTEM.

And, when I email his Supervisor, he will maybe get paid more. I have gotten than done in the past after encountering paradigms for excellence.

Finally, never realized this before yr dissing, but so far in my life, not once has anyone hung up on me. AND, I get things done, often on behalf of other humans, even they can't believe. Again, it's not simply what U know, it's where U R coming from, what u Bring and HOW U TRAVEL.
LEARN!!!!

Agent (ProSupport Kyle Matheney): "J, what I would like to do, if it's OK with you, is run to our PC lab and boot up a 980 real quick and see what happens during post. Would that be alright?"

J: "OMG!!!!!!!"

12/02/2013 02:44:31PM
J: "Yay!!!!!!!"

12/02/2013 02:46:36PM
Agent (ProSupport Kyle Matheney): "If you watch the 1 - 4 LEDs and the color/pattern of the power button change, that will give you all of your POST steps. Each combo of LEDs represents a different test in the POST process and once it is passed it will move to the next code.

That said, be
eps were reserved for critical hardware failures. I removed all of the system's memory, video card, etc. and hoped to bring POST to a dead-halt and get some beeps but the LED POST code basically told me "I'm looking for RAM, but I'm not seeing any" but didn't throw any critical errors because it was still able to actually physically check for RAM.

Ultimately, the only time you're likely going to hear that system beep is if you run into something like a corrupt SMBIOS, bad processor, full motherboard fail

12/02/2013 02:49:33PM
J: "Pls send me follow up email with link to yr Supervisor......so I have have the privilege to jumping up and down on yr behalf!!!!"

12/02/2013 02:50:15PM
Agent (ProSupport Kyle Matheney): "Awesome! I am glad to hear it! You can email my manager at William_Baskerville@Dell.com and that will be in my email signature as well. Is there anything else you had questions about, today?"

Addendum:

(LOTS to learn in this thread, guys.....only in SMALL PART NOW re the absence of system beeps per se.)

Below, what I just send Kyle's Supervisor....and, of course, I copied him.
********************************************

Mr. Baskerville!

First, anytime anyone not discerning disses Dell.....esp in its current incarnation, I leap in to mitigate with hard data.

In my recent dilemma re why my Optiplex 980 (mine with the Lynnfield i7 870 chip), unlike my previous two Optis.....gives no system beeps, something now comprising a giant thread on my tech site (you will see the link in the file, if you have a day or so to spare, pls go there)...

...I have had the privilege of chatting with three of yr techies. All have been professional, knowledgeable, personable, and I learned from all of them. All do Dell proud.

But my final exchange with yr Kyle Matheney represented the ultimate paradigm for what CS ought be in every company....and too often is not.

Beyond enterprise level, but there as well, one on one contact with members of yr consumer base truly is the foundation. But, am sure you already know this, and it is one reason yr support is currently not outsourced.

Kyle was everything any client could hope for. Forget, he was pro active enough in his determination to bring me final, definitive data....to get up and test an identical system!

American business is starved for this species of excellence, Mr. Baskerville. And Kyle is the distillation.

I am SOOOO IMPRESSED!

I told him you would get him a Ferrari, and he could pick the color. (It's the heartfelt thought that counts, LOL.)

Sincerely,
J

Hum! lets stick with the big block vet.ok

IS IT THE CONVERTIBLE, Denis? Is it numbers matched????:sneaky:():)

Just maybe, I deserve one for the sad little attacks in this thread tho. (Kidding.)

Very important it is an original big block. Cause some out there are not.:sneaky:

I know.but still if you look in you manual it tell you about the beeps code.so they should tell about that.hp also

I downloaded both the tech manual and the service manual before I even bid. I see nothing addressing beep codes. Wait: beepcodes are, in fact addressed. In depth. BUT NOT THE FACT THEY THEY ONLY emanate WHEN THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG AND NOT EVEN ON POST!!!!

All this can be found in the Service Manual. Along with detailed grid wiTH color re the diagnostic LEDs. I think you can even download that in French!!!!

I doubt there was any way to get completely clear on all this, other than from Dell itself. Which is how it went down. Good stuff form the mouth of the very healthy horse, if U will.

Tho I am deeply grateful to everyone who tried to help. I truly am.

Hold on.....I will get links.
____________________________________
Can only Link to the download manuals page for the system. But, I looked immediately, and saw nothing relating to the issue. Remember, the reality of the issue if quite esoteric!!! My backup Opti GX620 also has the LED diagnostic lights.....along with beep codes, and including the usual beep on POST.

I NOW GET the specifics of how this system was designed to work!!! That anyone should have had a problem with my being moved to that, or all the other infinite stuff I am moved to get clear on every day....boggles.

http://www.dell.com/support/my-support/us/en/04/product-support/servicetag/116NDP1/manuals

Not, I have the MT....the mini tower. biggest configuration in the line. The manuals cover all the configurations.
_________________________________________________
Edit: While I did get the Administrator's Guide......most of it is so above my pay grade I just moved on. Plus, I believe nothing even in there.....addresses the beep issues. You check it out for yourself if U like.

And Denis......read the chat with Kyle again. Even he, at first, did not know if this particular system was in the old camp with the beep codes, the new camp without.....or something in between! That is why he got up and actually did the test!!!!

Did U get that???? AMAZING GUY.
As it turned out. it is, in fact something in between! My system would, in fact, if something was wrong, emanate beep codes! (along with engaging the LED diagnostic lights). But it NEVER WILL beep on POST!!! And for this system, that...is NORMAL.

Seriously, who outside Dell could have know that? No way anyone here who made snappish, cavalier, sloppy pronouncements about Optiplexes, forget all newer boards. Tho thankfully, that was only a couple of humans.

See, boys and girls, nobody 'hangs up on" any human who is intelligent, emotionally present, open, sincere, collegial and no way some walking incendiary device.

BIG LESSON THERE!

AND NOW.....instead of my former yearning to hear a system beep.....my NEW YEARNING.... is to NEVER HEAR A SYSTEM BEEP!!!
********************************
Edit: Please, all you tech obsessed humans, observe what Kyle said about what the LITES DO ON POST in this system! Not once, since it arrived, have I ever powered it on while looking at the front of the box! Why would I have???? I never assumed they did anything at all on POST! But soon, I plan to do just that! LEARNING, ALWAYS LEARNING!!!!

This is some incredibly engineered machine, boy.

And the vitriol I had to endure from some right here on this site (thankfully a minority)....just after it arrived and I posted feeling soooo thrilled with my purchase in every way including what I got it for. Dissing Dell, dissing the individual chip, dissing my not arbitary choice....and more.

Very sad.

"Hobby".....my butt.

Not just the service, Denis.....the Optiplexes themselves! And, I hope even you learned some interesting stuff!:)

Cause see? this was not about a buggy driver....this was about wonderful (If maybe atypical) indigenous engineering.

Would be amazing, if those building their own rigs, could incorporate some of these fabulous diagnostic features. As Ketchup79 pointed out, would save serious troubleshooting time!!!

Late addenda:

System was shut down, I powered on, for the first time, watching the front of the box. U bet.....the little LED lites, all numbers, flashed, changed patterns several times at warp speed. Self test DETAILS!!! SILENT, but completely visible!!

I had no clue. NOW, I do. And, I think it rocks. It even made my BF smile!!!

And, this puppy also DOES have a beep voice! That round, black, little buzzer on the board...is not dead! But it only engages when the puppy is not healthy and happy. In case, that is, you forget to look at the lights.

The End.():)

There is a lesson here. You chased a simple "beep" at startup for 4 days that you swore all computers did, numerous tech support sessions and probably phone calls only to find out all computers don't beep.

While this post did win you the Sourest Grapes of the Millenium award (talk about dubious achievements)---and I sincerely thank those in this thread who made pure, luminous efforts to abet my journey----unimaginably, YOU are also, STILL getting all the data I worked nobly and hard to come to own, WRONG.

The expression sour grapes is used when someone wants something, finds he can't attain it, and then decides it must not have been be worth it, in the first place. While the expression "sour grapes" is used contemptuously, against someone who is bitter because he or she failed, it is a coping mechanism to avoid what's called cognitive dissonance.
Aesop wrote a fable about a fox who wanted to eat some grapes hanging from a lofty vine. When he found he couldn't reach them, he said they must have been sour, anyway; hence, sour grapes.

Jeez just chill out already and learn some manners, you didn't work on and you didn't find anything, you have been told numerous times that computer does not have post beep, which means it does not have it, ok? It won't be anyhow else, if that function is basically not there, it means it's not there. If you don't trust and listen to people here(whom have much better knowledge about computers than you), why you keep even asking stuff then, and later telling us how mean, harsh and not right we are and how the techie did the great job, instead of us. You are incredibly arrogant and one of the most impressive trolls I ever met. It's just total pain to deal with you anyhow hard we might try.

FOCUS. SCROLL UP, READ. this Optiplex 980 MT does, in fact have a POST BEEP. You....simply missed the fascinating, goosebump-making esoteric specifics.

No, I'm pretty sure after HUNDREDS of posts in this thread that the consensus is no beep on normal power up is "as designed/working as intended" on your new optiplex. You can dance around with as much flowery language as you want but that doesn't change the fact that your journey of enlightenment was an immense waste of time and resources.

At this point i'm not sure if this was an instance of epic trolling or a case study on detecting the onset of mental illness in a post exchange.
