Vigorising, put your fingers on the black round speaker on the board and see if it turns.

Well! Thanks so much for trying to help re this stupid mystery! Hand to heaven, on my way home just now on the subway, it struck me this misery may be mechanical/hardware.

Then I find yr post.

I opened the box and tried immediately, and not sure what it means, but the little black cylindrical speaker (# 15) is solidly secured to the board. Not only does it not turn, it has no play at all.

What does that mean????? Does it mean it is broken?

Thanks so much, Ketchup!

I just started delving, and found this:

http://apurbthegeek.wordpress.com/2012/10/13/why-my-cpu-beeps-and-what-is-motherboard-speaker/

Little cylinder appears to be a part of a wired together two component unit, and in this case, the flat part says "speaker." And to me, whole thing appears removable.

Or not. Sigh.

Mine is dug in, the cylinder, I mean.

OMG! It does seem they are posed to be removable!!!

Wait!!!

See this I jus found!

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000725.htm

Remember my first crazy thought this might be about a jumper on the board?

That white, oblong port with the uneven number of pins? Or does some lead plug into that?

Why is this so disgustingly challenging to troubleshoot?:\ I guess, cause it just is. Unlike RAM or PSU or cooler issues, this....is tiny and insane.

Makes me crazy that everything still looks perfectly normal in Device Manager re system beeps., current W7 driver---unless Wut Denis said about buggy driver is the issue So, would that not indicate this really is a hardware issue?

Wait!

http://www.ehow.com/how_8703157_connect-speaker-4pin-motherboard-socket.html

The little black cylinder is not really the speaker??? Where is my speaker?

And see? It says beeps very important!

Examine the motherboard connection headers. Locate the four-pin "SPEAKER" or "SPKR" connection header for the internal PC speaker

I am trying to let this go but it ain working.:$
___________________________________________________

OK....I see no speaker wires. I can feel how annoying this is getting to normal humans.:|

Locate the speaker. If it is not connected to the motherboard, it will usually be attached to an unremovable section of the computer case, such as the front near the power button. If the speaker is on-board, it will usually be small, black and round. In either case, it should be labeled "speaker."

Disconnect the speaker wires. Most internal speakers are connected to the motherboard by a red and a black wire. The power connector is usually a four-pin connector. Grab the connector with the pliers and pull firmly but carefully straight up from the motherboard.

Ahah! Behold my little internal speaker assembly. I see no red and black wires near mine. I should re open and look again.

This tiny thing costs over $7?????? As usual, made in China.

35 sold? Wut? Now, I did not try to force movement when Ketchup asked me to see if it rotated.....cause I do not believe in forcing. Maybe I should have been less gentle?

Having an interval of TRUE STUPIDITY!!!!!!

Why din I look in my Shop Manual before? I only looked in the tech manual.

Award winning stupidity
. Is why. Gotta go back inside and find this CABLE. Cause MAYBE, my thingy is just not PLUGGED IN???? When I looked, I din see that little lever they call the securing tab. Very much like how CMOS batts are secured.

Just cause someone can replace mobos, don mean they have any clue WHAT IS ON THEM.:hmm: I mean....ME.

To remove internal speaker,
Disconnect internal speaker cable
Press down on the securing tab and remove the speaker from the computer
And, to replace it, naturally reverse all of it.

Just LOOKED AT MY OWN PIC....mine has no visible wires! How is that possible? It appears not to plug ito anything!

O M G!!!!!!!!!!:eek::eek:

Not all of them were ordered with functioning INTERNAL SPEAKERs!!!! There were insane options! WUT?

WUT????:eek:o_O

Now, I am second owner, so no way do I have original invoice, and while I got lots of info on Dell site using the service tag before I bid, no way did it include anything about internal speaker.

Just maybe, despite little speaker appears to be there, my system was shipped INTERNALLY MUTE!!!!! Maybe little black barrel is only a plug and not a real speaker at all! Cause if it were a real one, where are its wires? where is its little LEVER???

WUT????????????????

Hello and greetings from Portugal.
This is my first post here at Dell Forums great community.
I've a Dell OptiPlex 980 with Windows 7 Enterprise x86 version.
I'm having a little problem.
I'm not getting any sound from the internal speakers but if I put an external speaker or headphones on the rear input it works just fine.
I've already updated the driver with no results.
Also, if I enter through a remote desktop session the sound it's redirect.
Can someone please help?

Verified AnswerVerified by DiogoSousa

When you purchased the PC, it had several speaker options -

No Speaker -$9
Internal Dell Business Audio Speaker
AX210 Two Piece Speakers $10
AX510 Sound Bar $20
AX510PA Sound Bar $20
Check your invoice and verify what you purchased.

Hi Chris,
You're right.
I've forgotten to update this thread but after talking internally there was a mixed up with the purchase so...no internal speaker was assembled... :)
Thank you anyways.

Best Regards,
Diogo Sousa

Ok, I am not sure what that means. Probably nothing. I have worked with that speaker very little. And when I have, it worked, so I didn't mess with it.

Are you running Windows 7 or 8? That will help determine how many places you actually need to look for a solution.

Hey! K, did you see my last post? Only took me forever delving to find that. It really is possible, this system shipped mute! There must be some reason I see no wires to my little speaker of the wort in the service Manual and the one I found on ebay. Nor do I see any little lever to uplift it, as it says there is with image in Service Manual. Nor do I see it plugged into anything.

I am running W7 64-bit. Do U think it's still possible this is a W 7 64 driver bug issue? And that I should try to install older drivers as Denis in Canada suggested?

Thanks much for your help.

Again, now that the real possibility exists the system shipped mute---pls see all the options just for the internal speaker---there is nothing I can do.

HERE IT IS BOYS AND GIRLS!

Now, given what I found online and posted above, not all these systems shipped with the speaker......I did something logical: I went to Dell support (don get much better than Dell support, they undid outsourcing too) and real time chatted with fab Sandra.

Had to take a long call from a client toward the end, but she did give me the info I NEED! FABULOUS REP SANDRA IS!!!!!!! I am sooo happy I got her!

(Also learned even newer bios version than what I flashed it to when it arrived.)

I will paste: Just spent forever redacting my name leaving only first letter of my first name....I know it is right to do, but it took too long and was annoying.

PREPARE, CAUSE HERE IT COMES!!!!!

This is why I do online support, the few times I have had to do it (thank goodness). I would hate to give up an hour of my life on the phone, only to get an answer that helped me nill.

She actually did make a good point, which is one of the thing I like about Dell - the lights. They have helped me in troubleshooting more than once. They must have a pretty good patent on the thing, as I don't remember seeing one on other machines.

Hey!

I didn't mind the online chat, and all Dell helpers are domestic and knowledgeable.

Yes, she did make a good point! But I still hope I never see them activate. The lights. Tech Manual has big page of grids with color illustrations for what all the warning light combos mean.

She also apprised me of new bios A14! Cause I had upgraded to A13 when it arrived not that long ago, and on their voluminous page for this system, most current bios still says A13. But I just did a search given what she said, there it was, I got it and ran it and at least I now have latest bios.

She also sent me a follow up email which I answered immediately to thank her.

I now get my little piezo thingy simply isn't the usual one for my model, the normal one with the red and black wires & the little lever affording removal/replacement. Mine must be soldered onto the board.

That it just don wanna make any beeps at all, I guess I will have to just accept. But.....she was so thorough she took the time to check and then said this: 11/30/2013 06:41:40PM
Agent (ProSupport Sandra Mcbride): "I was able to clarify your system has to have the internal speaker attach to the system board in order to hear the post beeps or the beep codes."

Still not sure if she means the internal speaker the system did not ship with, but I kinda think she did. Do you think?

I don like everything Dell, i would no way get any consumer level system from them, but boy, I could not respect and cherish the big business workhorse Optiplexes, so beautifully engineered ... more than I do, in every way. Always luminous reviews online.

I hope she uses the link---told her in the email response I had pasted the chat log---and everyone at Dell enjoys it. Tho bet none of them can figure out why my little Piezo thingy.....is silent.

My SO is annoyed I am yet again on this site. Like Sandra....he has a point.():)

Thanks, Ketchup79!

(I remain) Beepless in Manhattan.:\

PS: my core temps now around 24-26C, and the New WD Black only 33C!!!!

That really is possible.

Sometimes with computers you just have to toss your hands up, accept something is abnormal, and move on. Spending this much time on something as trivial as a beep when you hit the power button on an otherwise 100% functional machine will make you gray before your years.

K....I feel U. But I explored this inside, and thing is, Matt, what I am about is always delving, learning, chasing clarity until I own clarity and UNDERSTANDING. It's who I am, it's what i do by default.

I was born this way. Ask my mom.():)

And, there is a little light, blinking on the desktop in my head urging me to chase data until I can get clear on this. It is actually not just about wanting normal system beeps which I still do, it is about the former.

That, is dead on accurate.

So, when I can, I plan to chat with another fine Dell techie, given now, I have arrived at the core question: In this system, does the buzzer (#15), require an internal speaker installed (#8) to make normal system beeps?

Period. And if the answer is yes, then I might just get one of the many OEM ones I see on ebay. Then, the lite in my brain will stop blinking.:sneaky:

Remember, had I not spoken with...well, chatted with Sandra, I would no way have known about the new bios update (A14).....cause it does not appear on their official download page for this system. I thought she was fabulous.:D

Sometimes with computers you just have to toss your hands up, accept something is abnormal, and move on. Spending this much time on something as trivial as a beep when you hit the power button on an otherwise 100% functional machine will make you gray before your years.

This, seriously.

If it really bothers you, purchase the external speaker and plug it in. Do keep in mind that, if you do this, you do have to turn the internal speaker on in the BIOS. And, you may find that turning the speaker on in the BIOS causes the onboard sound to be directed by default to that internal speaker (either turning off any external speakers you have, or causing an "echo effect" where the sound is sent to both internal and external speakers at the same time. We have HP business desktops where I work that do this and it is very annoying to say the least given that the systems are locked down and common users can't make changes to stop it from happening).

BTW, Optiplex systems are designed for and intended to be used in a business setting. These are not consumer-level machines and, by default, have a totally different intended user base. This may result in a slightly different cant to the feature set as well.

While they will work absolutely fine when used in a home setting, they also may have little foibles that you won't see with consumer machines (such vPro remote management features, or even that onboard speaker option. Many businesses will purchase that cheap $9 onboard speaker option simply to avoid the expense of providing external speakers - for a general business user doing data entry or Powerpoint/Excel, that is all the speaker they really ever need).

SOOO INTERESTING!!!!!!!! THANKS MUCH FOR THIS!

I now know, after Sandra confirmed (tho I see clearly the little white port is empty).....this system shipped with no internal speaker.....need to know if, and if so WHY... THE BUZZER SPEAKER CAN'T FUNCTION WITHOUT IT. My intuitive take, is that they should be separate, independently functioning components on the board. But that is not what she said. I am not convinced she was right in that.

Re Optis.....this is my third one. Way back, I determined these would work perfectly for me, just their engineering thrills me. And this new/used 980 is the only one so far I have had any issue with at all. I LUV THEM. Every part of them earns my respect. They could not suit me more perfectly in every way.

The Opti which is now my backup one (I always have a backup one), my GX620 MT, with the still impressive Presler chip (P D 3.40)...I (needlessly, cause I thought I should then) upgraded the PSU, and as always, added RAM and second HDD......functions as perfectly as the day it arrived, tho now, it is in a closet. Never had a new one....all, carefully chosen, used, in excellent condition on ebay.

I knew before I bid, after checking the benchmarks of this Lynnfield i7 870, perusing the tech and service manuals....that there would only be one CPU upgrade for this LGA 1156 socket. But given the speed & specifics of this chip....for me, it was not an impediment.

You sound sooooooo experienced!!!!!!! I luv that.:D

Late edit; so interesting and sooo sleazoid a business would try to save money by not ordering workstations with the internal speaker, or order them with one to save money on external speaker. I think it's bad for MORALE, AND MORALE IS PRICELESS. Tho I only use my lovely inexpensive Altec Lansings and they do just fine.

Cute! And bless U for hanging in! So, let me get this straight, Denis, you are saying: the buzzer should, in fact, function normally without needing the internal speaker, unlike what Sandra said, what she said in this does not feel right to me; this is a driver issue, and, as U said originally, I should get the not plug and play driver for XP. for the beeps.
Is that all right?

And, Denis, Tylenol has big downsides. i.e. big liver toxicity!!!! You are too special to risk that! Jus sayin.

PS I luv "roman" cause it is so French!!!!!:D

Wait!

Just came up this:

http://www.file.net/process/beep.sys.html

I must hurry and check which services I have on and off! Is it possible mine in this is off???????

PS: reading the entries via above link, it seems maybe we should not mess with that file? But messing with things is what I do, so who cares?
