we've made our own pepperoni in the past, with fresh ingredients.

Sounds like:

"Made with" is also a huge tickery used by the food industry. "Made with 100% beef!". It just means that out of all the crap they added to it, 100% beef was one of the ingredients. They do this with juice too. "made with 100% pure oranges!" and there's a 20 item list of ingredients. :p

Sadly that's the truth for pretty much all food these days. Most of the stuff is not really what it says it is, but it is close enough that it's legally ok for them to say it is that.

My favorite.
On the front in big text: "Made with 100% pure juice"
On the back in small text: "Contains 3% juice"

I was just in Italy and had a pizza with the first pictured meat on it. Call me an unrefined American, but I prefer our pepperoni.

They do have much better chocolate, but I think everyone knows that. I also had my first Kinder Surprise.

With a little toy in it . :) Kinder surprise must be around for at least 35 years.

Or where 10% of something can be considered "good," and where you have a lot of ways of rounding down to zero.

Too much something per serving? Reduce the serving size until it's 0.5 grams, then round down. Zero!

I don't know of many other places where you can add multiple zeros and get a result that's greater than zero.
Yet marketing or advertising people get all indignant and offended when someone says that one of their primary roles is to find the best way to legally lie about a product or service. And if it's not legal, the next solution is to find a way to make it legal.

"This stuff is fake. But I don't want to call it 'fake.' That'll make it sound....you know, bad. But what if we use a word from another language that still means 'fake,' but also sounds good? Would that work?"

Faux leather.
Faux sapphire.

"I'm not lying. I'm intentionally misleading. There's a difference."

I am confused why you would even consider stuffing a mattress with any meat products?

As much as I'd like a bed of bacon to sleep on, I'd eat it before I was able to sleep.

Also, I bet you like your pepperoni well done...

He stares at it every night in a full length mirror.

Mass produced sausage(or just about anything) is usually lacking compared to the traditional form, but it's usually healthier too. Either way, I'd love to try the original/authentic sausage, not sure if it would taste better, but there's only 1 way to find out. It probably would taste better, given my past experience any sausage made by a European trained Butcher making small batches has always been a superior product compared to what's available at the grocery store. Even something as common as Garlic sausage can be spectacularly better from a Butcher shop.

Sadly, Butcher shops are difficult to find these days. Even back in the 70's they were few and far between, but much more common then they are today.

you should try looking for an Abattoir.

they usually have a very good selection of traditional meats.

here is a list:

Americans don't know cured meats, cheese, nor bread.

Visit Italy (or Spain), France, and Germany, respectively to culture yourself.

I approve of this rant.

Never been to those other countries, but nothing better than brotzeit in Germany (literally "bread time"), which is simply a platter of bread, cheese, and cold cuts. I've never understood why even fresh baked bread in America doesn't taste as good.

"Real pepperoni" may not be widely available, but you're kidding yourself if it's not available somewhere in NYC, let alone the entire US.

Eh by some of the best I mean winning such titles in world competitions... but that probably doesn't mean much to you.

Just because you believe that if something is from another country it must be better does not make it true...

Your first pic looks like spicy soppressata to me. You need to ask for that by name to get that in the states. The second pic is obvious generic american pepperoni which is just another word for a dry spicy salami that has its origins in southern italy. The word pepperoni means "peppers" in italian as in bell peppers. Peppers are commonly used to give the meat its red coloring and spicyness and the meat came to be known by this name here in the states.

If you go to italy and order a pepperoni pizza, they wont know what that is and you will receive a pizza with bell peppers on top. IMO, the first pic is infinitely more delicious than american pepperoni and can be eaten without heating.

verified.

the other option I got was a pizza with a hot-dog sliced lengthwise and laid in the center folded open.

neither looked anything like a pepperoni. it became quite clear to me that italians don't get pizza.
