Here is the FBI's annual report. Go nuts.
A total of 13.6k murders in the United States in 2009 (down every year since 2006, which was just above 2005), which is the most recent year for which final statistics are available. An interesting table
here which shows that:
1. More people were murdered during arguments than every type of felony combined
2. Murders by a stranger in the commission of a burglary (basically the scenario you describe) accounted for just 68 murders in the United States (I included "unknown"). So more like once a week (or less, as one break-in could lead to several murders).
If you were instead trying to imply that criminals are frequently randomly breaking into houses and murdering all of the occupants for no reason, then no the data doesn't seem to support that at all.
Frankly you seem to have invented a narrative about "[w]hole families killed while asleep" with no real data to support it. I'm sure that such things do happen, but not with the frequency you claim.
