I think with the Pentium-M Apple could kick some real butt.

If they do go Intel you can bet they'll be using the Pentium-M.

What do you all think?

Hmm ... lower-clocked, high cost, overhyped for the performance it gives ...

Yeah, it'd be perfect Apple material.

No, apple will never cross over, they have too much pride. In their eyes, being different and incompatable is the way to go, but they're just shooting themselves in the foot. One day they'll bleed to death and die, or be taken over. It couldn't come soon enough.

Apple isn't going for the PC market. They're trying to create something different than the traditional PC with all their itunes, imovie, idvd etc apps that work seemlessly with the OS and are free. They don't need any x86 CPUs and I doubt they'll be switching because they have alot of time wrapped up in RISC code.

Nope.

And I doubt Apple will go AMD anytime soon, seeing as it seems quite likely they'll go with the PPC 970.

For some strange reason I like that name: G64

Reminds me of my old C-64. :)

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that Apple won't be going to an x86 chip. Serious rumors have been swirling for a while now. A lot of people "in the know" seem to think they'll be making the switch at some point, it's just a matter of when.

They'd be better off selling an x86 version for OEM under the "OS X" label and keeping their APPLE name exclusively used in their own propriety systems.

A 64 bit x86 version of Apple OS X would be sweet on Opteron or Athlon 64. It would be perfect for them since it could easily run popular windows apps keep the Apple look and be a ton whole lot faster. They could make them propiertery systems still around this and a gain share back. This is the only way Apple will ever gain any share back in the Computer market.

Though it looks like Apple will do either adopt the new IBM 970 chip or go out of the computer business altogether. Shoot the most likely scenerio is that they adopt the new IBM chip and it is still plagued with scalibility problems so they go out of business. With 2 percent share Apple better start doing some stuff right.

typical windows apps probably rely more on the operating system than the underlying hardware

the thing to do right would be to come out with a windows version of the music store immediately

Why the hell would they want to run Windows apps? Besides, there's Virtual PC for that.

From what I've read, The 970 PPC has allready been adopted and is shipping. If I can find the link, I'll post it. BTW, They are profitable, Don't expect them to go out of business.

They have 5%+ and gaining market share. They also do many things right. Have you ever actually sat down with a Mac and used iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, etc. Might change your mind.

I completely agree...The business model is something for music companies to look into. Only problem right now is that it requires iTunes to use.

I would definetly sign up for Apple's music store if it came to the PC as it is what I have been hoping for a long time.
