If you are buying a new SLR, I think you should wait a few months and see if the 40D comes out. It will be the camera to buy assuming that it has all the newer features of the XTi.

not if you're on a budget and just getting into it. It will (hopefully) push down some used market prices.

Or certainly the price of the 30D anyway. You can get the 30D for under $1k right now with the double rebates.

Yeah, I'm basically sold on getting the 30D with a 17-85mm IS USM lens. Should be about $1500 after rebates, including the CF card (2GB, maybe 4GB).

I have a Canon EOS Rebel G 35mm SLR with two EF USM lenses (I think that's their designation, it says that on one of them). Any info on whether these will work on the 30D?

All EF lenses work on EF bodies.

While I'm busy mining for information, how large a print would I have to make before I noticed the difference between 8 and 10MP? Would 8MP make a clear 11x14 print, assuming no cropping? I don't think I'd ever go over 11x14...

I'm not sure what DPI digital photos are printed at. I usually use something like shutterfly, as all I have is a B&W laserjet.

Well, 8MP, roughly 3504? So at 14" that's about 250DPI...

I've done 11x14s with my 8MP. Pictures turned out fine, although you can see some very minor pixelation if you really examine the print closeup, but the fact is that 11x14s are meant to be looked at from a longer distance away. In normal viewing conditions you will not see pixelation on a 11x14 print.

I would be more worried with getting the colors you see on your monitor to match the colors in the print. First you need a monitor that faithfully reproduces colors. If you want your monitor image to match your printer output in color, you need a good quality monitor and a calibration unit, usually $100-$200, and work in software that is color managed, like Photoshop. It's also best to send it to a printer that makes use of color profiles.
