You realize there are close to 100,000 students, right? And that a few hundred people rioting doesn't equate to 100,000?

well, why aren't the rest of them vocal?

It seems to me that the sports media, that is very much on the side of PSU, would be putting mroe attention into showing the students that are not cultists, that are ashamed of the actions of their administrators, that see the real victims as victims, and themselves as nothing but students.

the media is either evil or not evil--not sure which one is right. But there is only one message coming from the student body.

My point was that it's a point of contention and ultimately a topic that portrays the university in a negative way. Any logical person would conclude that being a Penn State grad doesn't mean you're a supporter of the football program or their recent behavior, but school's also rely very heavily on their reputation in order to reel in more students. Although this doesn't affect the engineering program, your engineering degree (or whatever) still says Penn State and this issue isn't likely to go away tomorrow. The school's name is being dragged in the mud because of what a few penisfaces did for the sake of the football program. That's not cool.

If I were paying that much money per year, you'd bet your ass I'd want everything to be revolved around a quality education and not football. This quite clearly was not the case at Penn State and I have a feeling this is true for a lot of these sports schools. It's the same reason I declined a scholarship to St. John's. I don't care about your basketball team or your soccer team, I'm not here for that.

Uh.. football has nothing to do with the quality of education. If you want to take issue with the quality of education, you should look at the research $$ and foreign students/faculty. That's the real reason for worsening education.

the students are outraged about what happened? you mean the students that were outraged when Paterno was fired?

The ones that rioted and protested and held vigils for the loss of their beloved coach?

wait--what exactly where they outraged about?

:hmm:
Stuff they didn't understand. I certainly was outraged... that the board waited as long as they did before addressing Spanier and Paterno.

People want to believe that their idols are pristine. When that comes crashing down on them, they wise up rather quick. I was there last week for a meeting, there was no riot going on about the idea of removing the statue. There were no crowds at the stadium. Once the knowledge of his wrongdoing came to light, the mood shifted VERY quickly. I know I was in shock as I watched the report findings on TV. I wanted to believe that Joe just did the minimum and that was it, as an active part in the coverup... say it ain't so Joe, say it ain't so.

Not the football coach calling the shots and sitting in on administration meetings. That has nothing to do with the way the school is run, right?

That has absolutely nothing to do with academics. You really think Joe told the engineering department how things were going to be run? Then again, that might have been a good thing. He probably would have said "Maybe you shouldn't have so many fucking foreigners teaching class. I can't understand those damn chinks."

LOL. Hard to be insular with so many for'ners 'round? Did you learn xenophobia at State College? (Maybe because those kids go to the library instead of the stadium on Saturdays?)

Yeah, because speaking against having foreign professors who can't speak english and only care about research dollars sure makes me xenophobic

well, all of the sports journalists blasting the NCAA for overreaching and trying to separate this from football, I think, have a vested interest in reporting this kind of thing. They should. I don't doubt that they are out there--I've seen a handful of it in the past--but why aren't these guys doing their research and working on their stories like real journalists?

oh, right...sports journalism.

You're not getting me.

Let's put it this way:

If you knew that coach Paterno had so much clout in those board meetings before you went there, would you have went to Penn State if there were another school who would have offered you the same except they weren't being run by their football team?

I have a feeling a lot of people wouldn't have went.

Does the fact that the football coach is able to dictate conversations and sway the opinion of the board and cover up pedophilia that had supposedly been going on for decades not send a very clear message as to what the priorities of that school are?

It does. An incredibly clear message, in fact. It's very clear that it's football first with everything else, including pedophilia, after -- where do you think your engineering program would be? Hence the NCAA sanctions.

So not only was Joe Paterno a pedophile enabler, he was racist? Or are you putting words in his mouth now, too?

Can't wait to see how you spin "fucking foreigners" and "damn chinks."

I think I am done with this topic. People have their opinions about my alma mater, and my current employer. I can tell you that as a staffer at PSU the mood has been somber since last year and it is more so since the report findings. But you don't want to hear that. I don't know what to tell you other than: visit UP. Ask random students, staff, alums, and faculty what they think. But do a bit of research and not just interview those chanting some nonsense.

pretty much.

The real concern should be encouraging that talent to stay after they are trained, rather than let them just head back home.

? You've never had class taught by a foreigner who was only there to bring in research $$? Nothing xenophobic about wanting a professor/TA who speaks english.

yeah, I have. It sucks.

PSU = research money. to think that football is anything more than a fart in the wind to PSU's revenue is to be delusional.

The research is excellent, too. No reason to discourage it--only sane thing to do is encourage that talent to stay and keep generating useful revenue and knowledge.

But, you know...maybe that makes me un-'murican. :\

Are you kidding me? It would make a GREAT news story if there is a, let's say, organized group of prominent PSU alumni (think a group of celebrities, former/current NFL players, sports journalists, politicians, etc) that came out to the media and strongly condemn the evil five, past and current BoT, the way PSU football was ran the past few decades, and demand that from this point on it is run clean, restore Penn State's name, etc.

The only reason that we haven't heard of this type of thing is because there aren't any.

I'm sure Possessed Freak is right, that many people at PSU either don't really give a shit about football, or think what happened is reprehensible. But if you watch the #pennstate or #weare Twitter feeds, or listen to otherwise intelligent people like bignateyk make fools of themselves, one thing is clear: that culture alluded to by the Freeh report is very, very real.

I'd go so far as to state that that culture is pervasive in a lot of sports schools but it's being showcased at Penn State because of the public nature of the incident. It's one thing for students to be idiotic, you should expect that sort of thing. But seeing this oblivious nature from the alums and journalists is what really shocks me. This country really is full of retarded.

How is it that I've made a fool of myself? I haven't defended the University, Joepa, or anyone else in this thread besides the players, students, and residents of State College.

Sorry if you don't agree with my stance that it's dangerous to think that this could only have happened at Penn State.

FTFY, otherwise agreed. I understand when people at schools like OSU get riled up about the NCAA cracking down on a coach covering for kids who traded tokens for tattoos. The NCAA is arguably faulty in its exploitation of big money athletes, and those are victimless offenses (that aren't even actual crimes). You understand why Tre$$el covered for them because the 'eh, it's really no big deal' thought is, well, reasonable, even if it is wrong.

Covering for a child rapist is unfathomable.

In science we joke that thinking the earth is a sphere is wrong, and thinking it is flat is wrong. But one is much more wrong than the other. :p You can understand why people think the earth is a sphere. You can't understand how anyone could possibly think the earth is flat.

This country really is full of retarded.

It's because football sports football sports, football sports sports and sometimes education.
