I think we have to look at how she travels and see if there is a cheaper way to get her back and forth from San Fran.

Might actually be cheaper to charter flights for her or get her a Jet Card etc etc.

Nice dodge.

No, I don't think it'd be cheaper. First, this is money the US is already paying. The planes and people can be pretty much be sitting there or used - buying some new charter is more money to spend.

Second, there's the primary purpose of this in the first plance, the security of the military travel.

Private travel would be less secure and/or cost a lot to beef up security.

Cheap isn't the issue. Security is. The policy of using government transportation was put in place after 9/11 and she's been consistent in her use of it. Blame the prior administration if you think it's wrong. You ought to know by now I'm not a Pelosi fan. That's irrelevant.

I wonder how much additional taxpayer money was used to attend for the spouses & family who went on these trips?

Whether it's under Bush or Obama's watch, business as usual in DC.

Wingnuts love to hate on Pelosi. Whatever she does is wrong, by definition, because she did it.

Now that it's no longer their punchbowl, they'll throw in a turd whenever they can, try to poison the whole thing. It's a circle-jerk exercise in spite and denial, because they refuse to accept the simple fact that their leadership and ideology failed dramatically and dangerously, and that it will continue to do so if allowed to come to the fore again.

One definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again while expecting different results, something the rightwing exemplifies entirely. They're so sure they're *right* that faith and conviction must be maintained at all costs, regardless of results.

It's probably cruel to point out that they've degenerated into unwitting self-parody, blind in every way, but I'll do it anyway...

There are obvious additional clear security issues with that kind of approach. For instance if both the President and Vice-President are killed while Pelosi is in the air, immediately communicating and giving orders as Acting President over open communications onboard the aircraft can be problematic. (Anyone with a proper radar scanner can pick up ordinary Air Traffic Control communications between aircraft and commercial jet planes.) Basically Pelosi would be potentially be stuck in a crisis situation giving orders that an enemy could be intercepting and immediately aware of. Discussing key classified material would also be a huge problem. I.E. communicating that a highly placed General who is a CIA spy in the Chinese Military has let them know the following about the situation. (Basically Pelosi could be either stuck lacking key information to make decisions or classified sources could get outright blown.)

You also have the issue Al Queda might try to infiltrate the commercial pilot group and arrange for a clean sweep with the pilot suddenly crashing the plane at the right moment. An even more problematic issue is that infiltrators could arrange to be mechanics for a charter or net-jet type aircraft and the like and potentially arrange to sabotage the plane Pelosi is going to fly. Air Force One or military jets in restrict who is allowed to work on the planes, especially the ones designated to commonly fly VIPs.

It should be noted that it doesn't actually take both the President and Vice-President to actually be killed for Pelosi to become acting President. You just have to have a situation where both of them are at least disabled for awhile due to a medical issue. (I.E. one of them is not fatally shot in a coordinated attack, but the serious surgeries involved means the individual will not be capable of giving orders for many hours or even several days.)

This is what gets me. The records show repeated trips where not only do her husband/kids/grands go but sometimes they are flying back and forth without anyone else on the plane except military and police to watch them.

As a progressive, Ms. Pelosi is of the mindset that she is better and smarter than the average person.

logic would dictate, the letters "progress" and "Pelosi" do not belong in the same sentence.

unless she somehow left office and also somehow gave up US-taxpayer-funded retirement benefits. THAT would be progress.

When higher mental functions fail to satisfy, modern rightwingers also tend to let their inner child have its way in pouting, raving and mocking, as Ozoned has done, above...

Even when they really have nothing to say, certainly nothing constructive, no counter requiring actual thought, they just have to say something, anything to arrive at the self-parody I pointed out.

It's a truly sad commentary on the results of 30 years of thinktank generated rightwing propaganda, on just how badly twisted and deformed public opinion has become as a result.

Jhhnn's point was that she has to fly like this because she is second in line.

I am pointing out that the person second in line has as much a chance of being president as the person 52nd in line.

You should have told Bush that it was a waste of taxpayers money but you didn't, so now you just come across as a "hopeless" hack.

Sometimes I wonder if the accusation that P&N is "Liberal", something you hear stated regularly in OT, is actually true. I find it difficult to accept that all these "Conservatives" are actually authentic and feel some comfort in accepting them as Liberals pretending to be Conservatives.

My mind boggles at the monolithic idiocy and I find it disturbing to think some people actually might hold the positions they claim to hold. Especially those positions they have seen debunked before, yet persist in holding them for some special purpose that only they seem to understand.

When Bush was in power there was only ever really one Dave. Now that the dems are in power, many have slid so far to the right that they've pulled Dave to the center. It seems they are going to continue to piss and moan about everything until they get their bubbas and are set down for nap.

This really is a bigger threat to democracy than anything else currently, in conjunction with the commericialization of political propaganda and the unleashing of the corporate budgets.

Out nation could be all Glenn Beck type commentary, all the time, and these people would not think anything was a problem.

It's a little like the people who say they are for free speech but want to silence anyone they disagree with, not realizing the hypocrisy.

Our nation consists of the truth hidden in plain sight, in an embarraqssment of riches of hundreds of quality investigate books that go unread, while the propaganda fills the (corporate consolidated) media.

THey don't use 'free speech' except as consumers of propaganda, so they don't value it, and could easily be persuaded to back the silencing of 'enemy voices', if anyone listened enough for them to get heard.

One of our political factions seems to be more the 'ignorant and irrational', not any more solid basis for distinction. They're the party of id, feeding off the stroking of their ego, party identity, fear.

I've long called them a cult for a reason. Ideology is their fuel. Science has shown the rational brain stays inactive when these people are presented with political issue.

I wonder what would happen if I tried to put Couvasier or champagne on one of my military travel vouchers... HA! Yeah right!

I don't have a problem with any of them using military transport; but, what exactly qualifies them for all of the excessive amenities?! Why can't the extras come straight out of their pockets just like they do for "normal" federal employees?

I'm lucky to get cold water and MRE's when I fly military transport...

How very Spartan of you to expect the same privledges as the Speaker of the House. Hell, you just as well expect some secret service protection also.
