[PCPER]NVIDIA Talks DX12, DX11 Efficiency Improvements

PCPer.com had a great chat with nVidia about DX12 and DX11 Efficiency Improvements. Great read if you want to see how nVidia and AMD can improve the current situation.

pcper is the worst review site I've ever seen. All the nebulous testing methods of toms with the added benefit of plugging nvidia cards as the next thing since sliced bread. They're shills.

Why would AMD care about DX11 or 12. They already have a better API

While I agree PCPer is clearly half an nvidia shill site and half review site, I read that article earlier and there is some good information there about the APIs.

Just lay aside the usual PCper nvidia shill marketing and you can find a few pieces of interesting information in there.

Agreed, to be fair I didn't read the article. I'll take a look.

They're a shill site because of all the frame pacing research they did? FCAT results?
What?

I'm not going to sit here and explain what the word "shill" means, google it. Pretty sure PCPER is right beside the definition.

As far as the article, I feel like D3D has been making less and less progress since DX9. DX9 was a HUGE improvement from DX8 but since then improvements have been minor. Hopefully MS can integrate some of the features in Mantle and lower CPU bottlenecks too.

I dont think the pcper guys are shills, they are journalist and they will do anything for a story, even if it seems biased. Josh atleast favours AMD.

It seems Nvidia think that case specific tweaking makes for good design? will they tune their drivers for every game released?

What cemented their reputation as a shill site in my mind was their GLOWING review of the GTX 480 totally glossing over the temps and noise, then when they reviewed the 290 all they talked about was temps and noise. They consistently focus on any flaw in an AMD card and gloss over everything wrong with an nvidia card. Compare any of their reviews of an AMD card to Anandtech or [H] and they look obscenely biased.

Why would API overhead decrease with more number of cores used? Shouldn't it be the same or even higher because of job distribution between the cores?

I was watching some video review from PCPer and then the "reviewer" was like oh I'll pull out my cell phone in case I'm getting a call from Nvidia since his demo was failing miserably.

Their comments are hilarious, noticing how the nv setup was easier than the amd setup and then pretty quick it went downhill from there when the demo failed miserably. They had pre-release NV drivers and instructions for demoing the 4k screen.

Then when they were supposedly creating/testing the FCAT, it turns out it was partnering with NVidia.

From the article, an otherwise innocent sentence, unless you know PCPers ties to NV.
Though it doesn’t want to admit it, NVIDIA is clearly feeling some pressure from gamers and media due to AMD’s homemade Mantle API.

Do they call physx homemade? It's seems pretty derogatory to use such a term for a technological feat.

The company’s stance is to wait for DirectX 12 to be released and level the playing field with an industry standard rather than proceed down the pathway of another custom option.
Heh, noble.

During a handful of conversations with NVIDIA on DirectX and Mantle, there was a tone from some that leaned towards anger, but hints at annoyance.

Wow, Nvidia has enough confidence in their efficiency to use a 3930K to showcase their performance.

That's a ballsy move, wouldn't expect them to decide to use such a weak CPU to showcase their performance improvements.

Looks like Nvidia wins again.

I googled it. PCPER wasn't beside the definition.
So back to my question?

Interesting observation 😀

Can't even classify the article as an impartial opinion on this unfortunately. It's basically a verbatim PR release from nvidia with powerpoint slides coming from PC(NV)Per. There are a few nuggets amidst the largely logs contained within though.

Great find thanks. Now reading.. I wander what kind of driver NVidia has been cooking up to increase DX11 performance to that degree?

They tested in Windows 7. They probably fixed whatever bug was there for them that goes away when people upgrade to 8.1 and get a performance increase.

Wow, Nvidia is incompetent enough to not know that a good CPU increases GPU performance.

That's a pretty awful move, and it shows that not only does the API they use cause CPU dependence. They don't even know that a CPU affects GPU performance.

So back to my question?

I gave you examples and an explanation. Wand3rer gave you one too. Read.

they showed a chart of how sensitive their gpus are to cpu performance

That's not something that NVidia can fix. The slower CPU performance in Windows 7 (and not just for games) is because of things like slower kernel performance, and a less intelligent thread scheduler.

Haha. Thanx for the best laugh of today. Guys go to 34 min.

No pay to this guy from the nv sponsors this month. Lol.
