Yeah that's a pretty slick move and great idea.
Probably the only rares worth saving/sacrificing then to be honest. All the other options off the Darkshrines are sort of lame and/or temporary.

I think it's been mentioned a couple of times in this (ginormous) thread already, but dual flame totem witch is easy, not too equipment dependent and fun:

I have to say I really like molten strike when I use it in the lower levels. It just seems to plow through mobs pretty easily. I have an old (and horrible) Molten Strike build that I'd like to go back to (maybe start from scratch).

How to abuse darkshrines:

Get a rare with a crit multiplier mod on it.

Make your character naked. EVEN REMOVE FLASKS. Keep just one skill gem in inventory, that you want 20% quality on.

Sacrifice crit multiplier mod rare to darkshrine.

Hope crit multiplier mod is picked (equal chance out of all mods, so on a 6-affix, 1/6 chance). Enjoy your 20% quality skill gem. Go back to town and get dressed again. Repeat for every darkshrine until you're fully 20% gemmed out.

Yeah, Im going to do this to a few empower, enhance, and enlighten before the league ends. Fantastic trick.

Yeah I was working off that. Still kinda crappy compared to all the other builds detailed in the forums. I mean it's workable, but I'm lazy!

Ok Homer... this build is really starting to come into it's own for me. 🙂
I finally got the relentless fury offhand... Physical 1hand main.
Vaal reave and using Faster attacks with Hatred and Phy dmg and its seriously fun. 🙂
I just hit 32

I have a spare Vaal reave for you 🙂
I bought 1 for 1 chaos only to find one an hour after that in a corrupted area. 😀

My gear is not great, the relentless fury cost 1 Alchemy from poe.trade.
My current dps is only around 500 more or less with Reave. (normal Reave)

As for your build you are following the same guide as me.
I went straight for Golem's blood after picking up the intellect node where you are and I suggest the same. The HP regen is VERY helpful.

Does it matter what type of skill gem? I've been trying this on a flame totem, probably done it a dozen times at least with no luck (except at least once it seemed to level up the gem from level 1 to level 12). Been using mostly rare foils.

I picked up a Relentless Fury for 1C. Thing is a beast. My toon attacks in a blur now. Still need to find a solid weapon though -- always seems to be my biggest issue with any build.

The Relentless fury isn't used at all for Reave. its a stat stick so to speak.
However you get the bonuses from it... the big 2 are culling strike and Onslaught.
For main hand you want either a sword, dagger or Claw with the highest physical dmg (physical dps).
From what I gather it does not matter which hand they go.
I will say one thing.
I was using Reave with Physical dmg and Attack speed but Multristrike brings it to another level, especially with how quickly your Reave gets to 4 stacks. 🙂
You get Multistrike in a Quest in Act 4 normal.
You need to then attach it to bother normal reave and vaal reave.
I cannot wait until I have a decent 4L.. nevermind a 5L ... 😱
I can see how with gear this build will push out serious dps.

@ Jax.... I want to tweak Ziggy's build to add more HP nodes... his HP looked very ... shall we say low in the video. What are your thoughts?

Yeha I know it's not "used" for the Reave attack. I'm just saying that by getting it and equipping it into your off-hand, the Reave becomes that much more deadly.

REALLY looking forward to a 5L to toss in increased radius.

The southpaw build I did had 169% increased HP from tree @ level 85, I had 4.5k HP.

In talking with my GF I think we will be skipping Darkshrine to avoid burning out too hard before the next longer league.
