Parents on STRIKE!

So the Barnards went on strike, moving out of their house and into a domed tent set up in their front driveway. The parents refuse to cook, clean or drive for their children ? Benjamin, 17, and Kit, 12 ? until they shape up.

I don't get it, why don't they kick the lazy bastards out?

Their son looks like a piece of garbage.
Until you move out, or start paying some bills, you have no rights in your parents house. They provide for you, and you do what you are told. If you don't like it, leave.

Can they be charged with child neglect? Can't believe something this stupid was on the news shows this morning.

Won't happen. Kids are not that bad off. Kids these days do what they want, and curse and scream at their parents. But you try to discipline your kid, your a$$ is in trouble. This is an interesting approach.

Why should they be charged with child neglect? The children are the ones who got the house, and the parents have to sleep outside.

I hope you are asking rather than implying. How are they neglecting their children? By trying to instill some type of responsibility and values into them instead of allowing them grow up as deadbeat failures? I'd rather them stay out there for months if that is what it took, than to be another parent that didn't give a fvck and let their children run all over them. They've tried rewards, psychiatrists, and now they are trying a last ditch measure. I. for one, applaud them as the obviously DO care very much about their children. The Dad is a social worker for christ's sake. I'm sure he is well aware of what "neglect" really is. I wish half the parents in the US showed such neglect toward their children.

Kids take EVERYTHING for granted these days. Never known any time of struggle so they are never humble and expect things instead of hope for things. Huge generalization I know...

Damn those parents are idiots. Just like so many families these days, the children run right over the "parents".

Didn't you read the bit where it said a "well intentioned neighbor called the sheriff"? Isn't that ridiculous? I think these parents are doing the right thing...I would have busted those kids butts, but then the sheriff would have come over because I disciplinied my kid...this place is crazy, and those parents get kudos in my book!

haha, that kid looks like the biggest pot-heat piece of worthless trash ever.

Wow, I'm all for passing judgement on the next guy, but how do you know he's a pot head. Maybe he just looks that way because he refuses to clean himself as well as do chores.

 The second those kids run outta food, clothes, money, they gonna be thinking twice about disobeying their 'rents.

How so? Looks like they are fighting back to me.

I'll concede that at least they're doing SOMETHING, but they're giving their kids the house - that's insane. They sound like spoiled brats to me, and that's a fault of the parents.

man, that kid looks like a serious pothead to me. i wish those parents the best of luck. i, for one, would have beat the sh1t out of my kids for disrespecting me. but i guess this approach might work also. i wonder whats going to happen when the food in the house runs out. are the parents going to fill it up or are they just going to let their kids starve it up.

The dishes, garbage and dirty laundry would pile up for days when Cat and Harlan Barnard's teenage children refused to do their chores. So the Barnards went on strike, moving out of their house and into a domed tent set up in their front driveway. The [/i]parents refuse to cook, clean or drive[/i] for their children ? Benjamin, 17, and Kit, 12 ? until they shape up.

So basically the kids were already doing all of the work, and when they refused, the parents went on strike - what is it they are not doing that they weren't already not doing before?

I'm not defending the kids, no, but I can't take the parents side on this without more info. For a few years of my life I had a step-mother who made us do all of the chores when we got home from school, while she spent the day cozy on the couch drinking Squirt and watching soap operas. We didn't earn allowance or anything, which is fine, but she wasn't working or helping with the chores.

What are you basing your opinion of the kid? The color of his shirt?

I would have chosen a different method for dealing with this. Personally I would not want my family issues become a slow news day filler.

Well, they do have legal issues to keep in mind. Both kids are under 18 so the parents could easily be arrested for kicking them out of the house. I don't know how the kids got to this point, but the article says they have tried other methods in the past to solve the problem. Despite what you think, you can only do so much sometimes. I've seen perfectly good parents end up with one or two great kids and one really bad one even though they all had the same upbringing.

So basically the kids were already doing all of the work, and when they refused, the parents went on strike - what is it they are not doing that they weren't already not doing before?

You mean other than providing food, a place to live, and paying many other bills (clothes, etc...)? The article states that the parents are no longer cooking for them nor are they driving them anywhere.

Anyway, I'm guessing that things like dirty laundry would pile up until the parents finally decided to to clean the place up themselves. But now they have decided to let them live in their own filth to make a point.

"The tipping point may have been when Benjamin didn't offer to help his sweating, struggling mother work on the lawn Sunday, even though she should have been recovering from oral surgery."
In my house, I wouldn't wait for one of the kids to offer to help, they would be told to do it and would do it. Even if it meant I had to be out there holding them by the scruff of their neck MAKING them do it.

agreed.

Craziness...

I was never a steadfast, bust my buns type kid, but if chores had to be done, then chances are they were done. A swat on the a$$ when you're younger goes a long way to helping instill some respect for your parents. Granted, being 17 I'm sure it wouldn't work very well. 😀

How is it the parent's fault that their kids are greedy unhumble bastards? I've seen parents who raised several great kids, and then had one that would NEVER follow orders. Lord knows my parents did a very good job of raising my brother and I, but I was always very stubborn and headstrong. That is their fault? I guess they should have beaten me unconscious every time I didn't do what they said. The article said the parent's have tried a multitude of things.

Some times kids are just unmitigated pieces of sh!t.
