yea, i think they re-released my mobo or something, but i guess im out of luck 🙁 need a new processor if anyone has a great suggestion for what to get i'd appreciate it, gotta be intel and gotta be p4

The performance boost in games using a Pentium M will be great, but the performance in other applications will be far more worse, cause the Pentium M has a weak FPU. The Pentium 4 EE may run slower in games but will be faster in other types of applications, so the sacrifice doesn't worth it, P4 EE is good enough for now, it is the rival of the FX 53 and can rival the FX55 and both CPU are no slouch.

Sorry. I didn't record the Sandra numbers. I just ran a quick "five-point" benchmark (CPU, Memory, Networking, etc.) and stared at the results. The 2.8GHz and 3.4GHz EE results looked AWFULLY similar.

If I get a chance, I'll re-run Sandra and post the results. But I'd like to wait until I get my 2GB of RAM back from a client that I've loaned it to. I don't plan on running this PC with 512MB, so I didn't want to spend a lot of time on benchmarks.

I also wanted to run 3DMark06, but that benchmark refuses to run, complaining that DirectX 9.x isn't installed. Since Vista already comes with DX 10, I don't think that's going to happen. Can you have multiple versions of Direct X installed? I didn't think so.

Always wondered about the P-M performance. I know it's a mobile chip, but I dont care about low watt, does it preform better then a P4 EE?

in games, yes ... in other apps ... not necessarily

i know my Sandra benchs looked WAAY better with my EE than my C ... i'd call it 'significant'

also ... Vista is gonna be somewhat buggy ... and more than 'occasionally' ... at least until SP1 😉

Did you publish your Sandra benchmark results in this thread? I'd love to see them. If they make the EE look that good compared to the 2.8C, it'll make me feel better. 😉

Incidentally, something REALLY WEIRD happened while installing Vista on the Intel MB with the 3.4GHz EE chip:

When it came time for the actual "install routines" to begin, it took FOREVER. After the first couple of Vista screens, I was looking at a blank yellow-green Vista Install screen. NOTHING was happening. I had mouse control, so it wasn't totally frozen. I'd seen this same thing with an earlier evaluation copy of Vista RC1 (with some special Microsoft-partner add-ons) on a brand-new Core2 Duo 6300 machine with 1GB of RAM. I figured there was a flaw in the those special eval DVDs, so I gave up on the earlier Vista install.

Well, this time, I went away for a while. When I returned, lo and behold, Vista was asking me for my Product Key. But each step took a LONG time to complete. When I finally got to the actual Install, when the files are copied and configured, everything was normal again. The Install took only the normal ten to twenty minutes.

But until I reached the actual file copying part, it was acting like the whole PC was running at 1/3 speed. Even the mouse was extremely jerky.

Now that Vista is installed, everything seems normal. The mouse works fine. I can play DVDs fine. And the benchmarks are "normal" (even if they don't show that the 3.4EE is faster than the 2.8C.

Incidentally, I started an XP Professional installation on this same PC, and THAT proceeded at "normal speed". I don't know why Vista's Install routines are so slow on some PCs.

it was an 'incidental' look ... as i am primarily a gamer ... but i looked and the difference was significant [over 10 or 15%]

and i *refuse* to run Vista till it is needed for gaming ... DX10 games are about a year away ... and i figure by then - when i do the quad-core upgrade - Vista will be "mature" with probably SP2 close.
i am not a beta tester for Mr Gates 😛

i think you'll feel better when you finally run Sandra on your own machine

3.8 seems to be the "brick wall" for Netburst, short of exotic/water cooling. Most likely why Intel didn't offer a 4GHz chip.

I think my 570j may have been the fastest P4 ever released. There was a 670 released with 2MB of L2 instead of the 570j's 1MB, but these two trade blows depending on the bench and only very slight differences either way. The P4 3.4 EE only does better in very few game benches it would seem.

The best thing I like about this 3.8ES is the unlocked multi. Allows for it to run a lot cooler than even a 3GHz Prescott. Saves a bit of power too.
I am not sure if non ES 570j's have the unlocked multi.

very good deal on the P4EE though guys. Good things come to those who wait. That is for sure. Good performance, good price.

So, come the end of April, I will be moving on to a new rig. This ES will be in FS/FT eventually.

I think that if I even tried to o/c this chip, it would just crash however. 3.8 is at, or damn near the max on air for Netburst, as most of us in here are finding out.

ok fellas, i've sent back the p4 3.4 EE, time for a full mobo/cpu upgrade...what is a good choice, do i switch to AMD, or do i keep with Intel, i'm looking for a board that is good, not top o the line 300$ just something that will get me to the next level. then after that its just finding a processor to fit it....guess its easier said than done eh

you hit the top of the P4 food chain in P4EE ... there is Pentium D which is faster ... but if you want highest performance it has to be Core2duo --if you can find a hot deal in your price range ... there are also MBs that will take your old DDR, i believe ... April 27 is a price slash by intel ... if you can wait

i'd say there are also current awesome hot deals on A64s and X2s ... the other guys would know much more about AMD platforms

Core 2 Duo is the ultimate upgrade nowadays. A motherboard/CPU combo can be had for less than $300. The only problem is that you'll likely have to buy a PCI-E video card and DDR2 RAM, too. It appears there are only a few, mostly lower-end, motherboards that support Core 2 Duo along with DDR memory, and it looks like they often use VIA (yuck!) chipsets (which I would NEVER use again).

Below that in performance, I'd suggest looking at the 775 Intel Pentium D choices. You can get an Intel-chipset motherboard and dual-core Intel CPU for about $200, and you can find motherboards that allow you to re-use your PC3200 DDR and AGP video card.

so it seems that with out saving up like 800 bucks to basically rebuild my whole system, its best to not go to 64 bit and stick with normal pentium...i wonder how much i can get for my system on e-bay...hehe might be time for a project...

3.74 is *good enough* for me at stock vcore ... none of my games are slow ... and i certainly don't need better than PC3500 for 1:1 even at 3.8G ...

so ... i guess 4.0Ghz is "out" 😛

but a nice CPU ... for $120 [net $85]

Yep, that would be me... The guy building the '55 Chevy rig with a blown 454... 😀

Anyway, having run orthos all day (and all night) I've discovered a couple of sweet spots!

3.7G (219 1.675v) & 3.8G (224 1.725v) with '0' (blended) errors! I'll fill you in later, if you're interested... 😉

If those voltages *seem* a little high, be aware, they're drooping about 0.050v on load...

I'm not gonna run it any faster than that, 'cause I can actually smell the nb and mosfets burning!

The chip is running cool as a cucumber (hit 50C pushing 4G, otherwise low 40s) but the mobo components are having a tough time keeping up!

You pretty much hit the nail on the head... 3.7G'ish is the place to be, IMHO! :beer:

BTW, I forgot to tell you...

I blew the fuse in my UPS (battery backup) earlier in the evening, running orthos -- 3A 250v slow blow!

Blew it big time! Looked like black spray paint inside...
