that was gonna be my next question...
:p

no there is no certainty ... but it looks good

just like with my Sapphire ...
:Q

i better leave this topic up .. to see if anyone has experienced the IC7 and the 3.4EE

Changed the title :p

it's become an OC'ing thread :)

==============================
latest 3/19 ... tops out at 3.74Ghz ... FSB is 222 1:1 ... nice performance increase over my 2.80c at 3.31Ghz ... a *keeper* :)

UPDATE: cheap upgrade indeed ... from 3.4Ghz > 3.7Ghz with a cheapie cooler at stock vcore
good enough
:)

==============

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=P43400F478
--at the geeks for $119 ... cheapest i ever seen

http://www.intel.com/products/processor/pentium4HTXE/index.htm

it looks like it will but i want to be *sure*

and if so, it looks like a great cheap upgrade over my NW 2.80c @ 3.3 or 3.2 Ghz ... since it should also O/C perhaps even better

i got a x1950p/512M in AGP ... a OCZ 850w PS and decided to "un bottleneck" my videocard if possible ... currently scoring 8075 in 3DMark05 so there is use for a better CPU.

edit: Evidently EE is ok for the Abit IC7 .... now will my stock intel P4 NW cooler "fit" until i get something better?

Cooler suggestions?

it was a pretty expensive CPU ... does anyone have *experience* with it?

what kind of O/C can i expect?

multiplier is locked, right?
... of course .... what did i here about EE?

yes it will work, they work in most mobo's that support the Northwood C (800fsb) P4's, you should be right...as I said in the other thread.

:D

thanks .. you know how i got *stuck* with my x1950p ... and spent a few hundred dollars to bail myself out?

i studied the intel and Abit site and it *appears* to work ... but then some early Prescotts also 'worked' with the IC7 - hit-or-miss :p

i don't want a chance of a miss ... this time

i am running out of resources

:D

and i gotta 'save' for that 2GB PC 5000
[not ... private joke]

I wouldn't worry about it at all. If you want to be absolutely certain, I have a 3.2C that'll do 3.6GHz, make an offer and it's probably yours.

thanks ... i already ordered the 3.4EE - last night ... so it is queued for shipping
--of course, the only way to be *absolutely certain* is to plug it in ... next week

- it is definitely on intel's list for IC7 ... though not on Abit's ... i just couldn't pass up the fastest CPU for my MB for so [relatively] cheap ;)

of course it is a *dead end* upgrade ... but it will at least let my x1950p stretch it legs a bit more ... and i may be able to postpone that PCIe2 upgrade a few more months
[the "manditory" *justification* :(]

of course i now have a P4 2.80c and a 480w TT to "offset" my purchase of a 850w OCZ and a P4 3.4 EE ...
...they'll pay for the tax and shipping :p

:)

I have the same board and a few months ago I was going to do the same thing. I couldn't find anything on the subject (google) and the Abit web site said it could take a 3.2 so I didn't take the chance. Let me know what happens. They are the fastest 478 socket you can buy.

Edit: Let me know if you can get it to 3.7. It may help alot with minimum., average and a little on the max fps.

i decided to *trust* intel ... they are usually more up-to-date on old MBs than ABit would be.

their last BIOS in '04 probably only *officially* supported the 3.2 ... i doubt it will freak-out with a 3.4

OF course if anyone has *experience* with the IC7 and 3.4EE, please LMK ... i can refuse delivery if it doesn't

i am hoping for 3.8 Ghz ... a "worthwhile" upgrade
:)

Good luck with trusting intel ...:p

or with the O/C?

:D

isn't it kind of a "given" 3.4 > 3.6Ghz?
:Q

i thought the later EE steppings had better heat dissapation ... or i am i wishful remembering?

what about a HS/Fan?

will my *stock* NW cooler for my 2.80c also "work" for the EE?

will it even fit?

i'd like to see if it is *worth* getting an extreme cooler?

what kind of OC can i expect?

anyone have *experience * with this CPU?

Please dont go with stock on this one. I would suggest the Zalman CNPS9500 plus some AS5. But then again, what do I know. Please, someone tell me iif they agree. I want to be right on something for once. lol :D

i want to *test* it with stock ... as long as it "fits" ... i can blow ice cold air on it :D

it might be a real dog ... or not ;)

the stock intel P4 NW cooler - i have the heavy one - also worked for the Prescotts, i believe -
of course, tell me if i am wrong ... i have no experience with the EE ... high-end CPUs have been always outside my price range ... even years after. :p

anyway, IF it has potential, i want a better CPU HS/f ... no water, please.

The stock cooler will work, but won't keep up with temps from higher overclocks. Basicly the stock heatsink is only good for stock speeds, and ver slight overclocks(100-200mhz).

whats wrong with water cooling?

I've been using it on most of my rigs for the better part of 5 years, and I've never had any problems with it leaking, and water cooling is generally quieter than most decent air cooling.

Not to forget to mention that it looks really cool as well as keeping things cool.

Eh, the CNPS9500 isn't all that great. If you want suggestions on HSFs, take a look at the benchmarks Anandtech has been running on HSFs lately. Just make sure whatever you get has suppost for s478.

thanks ... so i get to 'test' it ... first :)

*nothing* wrong with water cooling ... whatsoever ;)

--except i am a cheapass and it probably won't benefit the EE much over air-cooling

I have a Zalman CNPS7700 (Linky) on a P4 3.8GHz (570j) and it stays pretty cool. So I would think it would be more than sufficient for your 3.4.

Oh yeah. It is pretty quiet. AFAIK it comes with a speed control, but I don't use mine. I just have it plugged directly into my mobo cpu fan header.

Idles at 38C. Usually never goes above 60C when gaming heavily. And that is with it full of dust as I am looking at it right now, need to blow it out.

ADDENDUM: I just blew it out and now idling at 36C. Fan speed is 1770 rpm.

you wouldn't believe the dust bunnies that were hiding when i changed my PS :p

you gotta upgrade HW every once in a while ...

you DO know i planned this upgrade for over 3 years ... i was almost without hope that i could ever get better than my CPU in my IC7 ... for cheap

isn't this one a little more flexible?
Tuniq Tower 120 P4 & K8 CPU Cooler - Retail
i need a new case, anyway :p

kinda pricey, though

edit: now that my PS is so quiet, my NB fan is bothering me .. any suggestions?

easy replacement?

It should work, I have the P4P800-E Deluxe and both have the same CPU specs support, otherwise I wouldn't bother ordering that P4EE hehe
