Hey Guys and Gals. New Poster here. I stumbled across this forum after googling 3/4EE overclocking. I am a long time Overclocker from way back. My first was a 166MMX that I would run at 200MHz. My next adventure was a PII 333 that was supposed to be multiplier locked, but after scraping off the Bus Indentifier pin I could run that at either 400 or 450 w/100 bus. Next was my 900MHz Celeron that would run at 1.2GHz. I held on to that for the longest time. A couple years ago I did some homework and ended up with the 2.4C wich runs good at 3.3 and would sometimes lock up at 3.4 but I was running the stock cooler. I also had a 9800SE which softmoded and basicly turned it into a 9800PRO but since have upgraded to a 6800GT.

Friday I got one of the last 3.4EE 478's off NewEgg being that it is basicly the fastest socket 478 processor and seeing some of the people getting 3.7-3.8 clock speeds and the 2M L3 Cache which I hope will be here mid week. I also got a ZALMAN CNPS7000B and they are going into my Albatron board. I figure $100 minus what I will be able to sell my 2.4C for, this was a good upgrade and saves me from having to get a new Board/Chip/Mem. I will post some benchmarks when I get it up and running.

Matt

well then welcome ... i am not 'regular' here; i 'live' in Video and Games forums [Hot Deals, of course] ... the guys here are quite knowledgable and generally polite :)
--unless you 'knock' their chosen brand of CPU
:Q

you got yours even cheaper ... i guess intel found a few EE crates that Gordon Freeman hadn't broken up yet :p

i have been *planning* this upgrade for 3 whole years [i used to bug the guys here about upgrading my 2.80c @ 3.31 since '04 ... and generally found because of price it wasn't 'worth it'

when it came into my range ... less than $100 for an upgrade [including HSF] i *jumped* on it and i have been glad to positively influence some other enthusiasts upgrades for the better

let us know how yours performs, please

I won't knock anyone's chosen brand of CPU cause I think both rock. It just happen to be timing and what-not that my last 3 CPU's were Intels but I have always looked at the AMD option each time. It's a good thing we have two major companies as that brings competition which will result in lower prices. It could be worse, we could all be using Cyrix.

me too ... although i tend to knock *both* companies ... and nvidia too ... especially when they are trying to "pull something" on us
--like intel fanboys claiming P4 was an engineering triumph ... or AMD's bogus excuse that r600 is delayed to bring out the midrange cards ... or nvidia's viral marketing

so everyone will dump on me equally at times .. sometimes all at once
:p

since my first processer MOS 6502C - 1.77Mhz ... then a long gap of no computers ... from the early/mid 90s, *all* my rigs have had intel inside ... purely by 'timing' ... they were best bang-for-buck at the time i upgraded [weird, i guess, compared with most everyone else's upgrade cycle] ... i'd love to have and AMD CPU ... even now and certainly with Barcelona

Same thing happened with GPUs ... almost always ATi ... since Rage Fury32 ... except for the first GeForce,SDR and then last month i got the wonderful BFGTech 7800GS OC ... and would have kept it but couldn't sell my x1950p ... 'that' started a mini upgrade cycle ... 850w OCZ, P4 3.4EE, HSF ... WS LCD.

My first CPU was a 386DX running at 33MHz, then a 486DX running at 66MHz, then a Pentium 90Mhz overclocked to 200MHz, then Pentium 3 Tualatin 1.13GHz, then Pentium 4 2.4B, then Pentium 4 3.4C, and now the Pentium 4 3.4EE, videocards only a few since at that age I was only a console gamer, I would use only those computers for basic stuff. I started playing games when I bought the Pentium 3 with an ATi Mobility Radeon (It was a laptop), then I bought the P4 2.4B and a Radeon 9700PRO, then I upgraded to a 3.4C and a X800XT which I flashed to XT PE. Is not a very long story.

Cool. I had a 386DX33 but that was my second PC. I bought this Star Wars game at the time and it needed a CD rom and Windows 95. Here came the upgrade bug. 486XD33 with my monster 16 megs of ram and 2x CD Rocm. I was stlyin :) From there I went to a DX66 and then to a 586. That was when a co-worker at the time brought in Quake 1 and it was all over. Dame gaming bug... I would play that for hours and hours and hours...

Yeah cool. I still remember the bad taste of a Windows 3.1 machine, with it's program manager and silly screen savers and colors. Windows 95/98 unstabilities and This Program Has Performed An Illegal Operation And WilL Be Shut Down message, I skipped Windows Me, Windows 2000 which is nice and I like a bit better over XP. The very first game I played on a PC was Legacy of Kain 2.

I was one of the lucvky ones who had a stable Windows 98 and had the same install for over 5 years. That has to be a record. I had an aocassional lockup here and there, but I can get XP to do that too.

how is this memory? ... it's been SO long

will it do 222FSB? i think most PC 3200 will do 215FSB ... that IS my P4 at 3.65Ghz ... i figure the extra RAM will be useful if performance doesn't suffer much. :p

it is Mushkin 2x512MB PC3200 [3:3:3:8] ... i'd like to replace 2 sticks of 2x256 OCZ with it and pair with with my Mushkin 2x256 PC3500 [2.5:3:3:7] ... for 1.5GB total

cheap enough ... $66 + $5 shipping

mushkin 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)

the first stick is $42.99 after $10.00 Mail-In Rebate - $20 coupon = $22.99 + 42.99 after MIR for the 2nd stick ... $66 plus shipping after MIRs for 2x512MB

doable?

CPU Tests
CPU Test 1 2.3 fps

CPU Test 2 4.0 fps

In the meantime gonna get this memory

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148015

That should allow me to run 1:1 over 4ghz stable.

I had her at 3.9 1:1 windows stable but not benchmark stable.

I'll continue to OC at 5:4 see what this beast can do mayby drop to 3:2. Damn generic ram.

Hurry up GeCube!

so we're all reasonably close ... the OCs are similar ... i could also boot into windows at over 3.8Ghz with the 5:4 divider ... i just didn't want to get a better cooler or up the voltage very much as temps started to climb.

that PC4000 is nice .... but if i got a pair, i'd need two pairs ... and that is about $230 for 2GB ... for only a year's use ;)

and i don't need anything over 223FSB ... the limit of my core ... at what i consider 'safe' :p

so i am looking for good PC3200 or regular PC3500 ... i think RAM prices are still heading downward ... if not, i can survive for another year with just 1GB

looks like it will, Biostars cpu support list makes no mention of any Extreme Edition P4's for any of it's mobo, but pretty much anywhere a 800FSB Northwood or Prescott can live is generally suitable for a Gallatin core P4EE...

But on that motherboard...I wouldn't bother.

how about this- http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configu...p?ktcpartno=KHX3500AK2/1G&promo=hx2shp

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144141

Kingston HyperX 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 433 (PC 3500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail $99.99

2.5-3-3-7 in 2x512MB should pair with my OCZ PC3500 2x256MB 2.5-3-3-7 perfectly for a total of 1.5GB ... for a hundred bucks plus tax and shipping [$5]

i can sell my Mushkin 2x256 when i sell my P4 2.80c and TT 480w PS ;)

good deal? i think 1.5 GB should be enough till the real upgrade

==
and yeah, i'd upgrade from a Celeron if my MB supported it and the rest of the components including PS and RAM were OK ... CPU performance will double

damn, you guys are slow :p

now that my rig is *so quiet* - After THUGSROOK suggested i just remove my NB fan -i figured i'd reward myself with another upgrade
:Q

i ordered the RAM ... it'll be here fri
[--finally got the NewEgg 'preferred acct']
:D

*hope* it works with my other resident RAM ... no reason it shouldn't [?]

speak now --or i have to buy another 1GB Kingston HyperX (2 x 512MB)
---then it becomes too expensive and i could have got the 'cool' stuff for a little more
:frown:

it seems games don't actually yet *require* 2GB ... but it appears they could use more than 1GB
i really want more than 1GB RAM without spending over $100 ... 1.5GB looks 'about right' for another year ...

not too hot or too cold ... not too big or two large ... 'just right' :)
-otherwise unbearable

i *think* i am done for now

letsee ... CPU ... HSF ... PS ... Video Card ... RAM ... MB improvement ... WS LCD ...

did i *miss* anything

after 3 years i guess i can afford to dump a little lovin on my rig

maybe to a prescott or Northwood at 3ghz might be a good idea...but it all depends on what the rig is being used for, what memory it has and what video card is being used.

Got it installed.....I just ran it up to 3.6 and I'm gonna let it "burn" there for a bit running FAH....then see what it will do

I don't expect much more than you guys got, but I can always hope....I have a Thermaltake cooler with a 92mm fan and some sweet Corsair PC3500 BH5....So I might get lucky..:)

Got mine today too.

My Original setup:

Intel Northwood 2.4c @ 3.2GHz
1024 DDR @ 427MHz 1.6 Multiplier
Geforce 6800 GT

Aquamark Score:
GFX 8,796
CPU 10,034
Score 61,160

3dMark05 4916

Now the Upgrade:

Intel EE 3.4 - 512 L2 - 2M L3 @ 3.4GHz
1024 DDR @ 400MHz 2.0 Multiplier
Geforce 6800 GT

Aquamark Score:
GFX 9,192
CPU 10,111
Score 63,194

Didn?t run 3dMark05 at the stock speed

Intel EE 3.4 - 512 L2 - 2M L3 @ 3.7GHz
1024 DDR @ 436MHz 2.0 Multiplier
Geforce 6800 GT

Aquamark Score:
GFX 9,417
CPU 11,053
Score 66,035

3dMark05 5006

I couldn't get a stable boot at 3.8GHz, but I think 3.7GHz is gonne be fine. I ran it at 3.7 for a little bit on the stock Intel cooler, but I was starting to go into the 60's C, so I slapped in my Zalman CNPS7000B and that brought me back into the low 50's.

something *good* , i think

:D

giving a bit more life to some aging and formerly dead dead-end systems

i know i was *thinking* of going the Core2Duo route when i *know* i really want to hold out for quad core ... now i can wait ... without "suffering".
:sun:
now watch these guys upgrade their video cards ... :p

going from a 6800GT or x800xl to x1950p will be a heck of a lot more substantial - in games [30-50%+] - than the CPU upgrade. ;)

expect an invasion in Video ;)

and they are welcome, of course

hmmmm, if i remember correctly... there was an (i875) issue when running 4x double sided dimms, especially if they werent all identicle.

certain bios tweaks needed to be disabled and/or they auto disabled themselves... something like that.

benchmark before and after when you get them.

nope .. i am running 2 mismatched pairs in DC right now ...

2x256MB OCZ -----PC3500 2.5-3-3-6 and
2x256MB Muskkin PC3500 2.5-3-3-7

neither of the pairs works at much more than "slightly agressive" timings by themselves ... i tested this thoroughly back in 04 when i got my 2nd 2x256

and you can still edit the BIOS [with the last one] but they won't run much faster than 'enhanced', i believe ... the next step-up for single 2x256 pairs running by themselves ... not that big a deal at only 220FSB :p

so i will be selling the Mushkin 2x256 and pairing:

2x256MB OCZ -----PC3500 2.5-3-3-6 and
2x512MB KingstonPC3500 2.5-3-3-6

what's the difference?

of course, that might be part of the reason my CPU score is a bit lower in 3DMark05 ;)

anyway, i will check it ... newegg is really cool about "exchanging" stuff without paying a restocking fee

the 256mb modules might just be single sided dimms.

i dont remember the exact issue, may have been the GAT tweaks, one of the big guys from ABX Zone did all the testing on that and he did run into certain issues.
as long as everything is running the way you want it to and there is no performance hit i wouldnt worry about it.

just do your testing and find out.

of course ... and thank-you

i believe i remember issues when you were at the limit of your 'mismatched' RAM ... the aggressive and 'turbo' timings wouldn't work - period

since they don't work - anyway - i should be OK

if they test much lower, i will return the Kingston and ... sigh .. buy 2x1GB PC4000 and go for broke :p

i am just trying to do this whole "upgrade" on the cheap

and so far ... it seems to be working
:)

i still can't get over how quiet it is ... including that 850w OCZ
