Lowest on Pricewatch (www.pricewatch.com) is $8 plus $5.50 shipping.

At prices this low, shipping will be an overwhelming cost factor. Any deals on cheap shipping? :)

IMO, at about the $8-10 mark, mail order purchasing starts to become uneconomical.

Yeah, the shipping on these small items will get you every time.

I had been planning on going to one of the big computer shows this weekend and grabbing a few 8 Meg cards. In my area (NYC) Coast-to-Coast Memory lists them for $8 on the Web and they usually show up at the shows.

Kwad Guy, in my experience you can sometimes find reasonable deals on the little "Zio" CF USB readers...they're nice and unobtrusive...work great.

Got my frame (actually a present for my wife) last weekend! Looks great. Nice rosewood type frame. Loaded up 200 of my digital snaps resurrected from the black hole in my hard drive (about 16 Meg of a 64 Meg card) and tested it out. I am really happy with it. Today I ordered another one to take to work.

I use a 5 in 1 Flash Reader(with internal 16 Meg - $35) from Newegg (my camera uses Smartmedia and my son's mp3 uses MMC) to read/write the 64 Meg CF media (also from Newegg $25). I love the 5 in 1 Reader; very easy, very fast.

Still 1100 left at Compgeeks!

Go for it!

1081 left!

They had 1465 at 12:30pm today. They are movin' out at about 48 per hour. At that rate you better order by about 7:00pm EST tomorrow. :)

First rule of sales? Always leave them with some FUD.

Sorry! We cannot fill your order of 6969 units, but we can give you 981.

Going like hotcakes people. Giving this a well deserved bump. Saw this in a local camera shop for $399.

Zio's can be had at compusa for 29.99 - 10 MIR = 19.99. This is compared to 24.95 online + shipping. The problem with the comment about how for small items it's uneconomical to purchase online, that does that make sense in this case. They are cheap online but check out any local stores like staples and compusa and you will notice the costs are much higher, coupled with tax too. So even though it hurts to take such a large shipping hit, it still evens out at least.

These are NICE ! I had a kensington all ready to give to the parents for xmas, got a Kodak one also, it is SOO much nicer. I feel ashamed I was going to give the kensington frame to them! ;)
Definetely worth the extra $60 !

These are going a lot slower this time. I was kicking myself for not getting a lot bunch of these for ebay, but I'm glad it didn't :)

I love mine.

I have ordered from Star Components before and was perfectly happy with the order. The base shipping charge covers a lot of items i.e. I believe I paid something like $10-$12 for a motherboard, two hard drives, some memory and some cables. Classic mail order problem -- some places are expensive for one item, but a great deal when ordering four or five items, other places are the other way around.

I also wanted to echo various comments in this thread.

First, THANK YOU for posting this deal to this forum. The last time I looked into this kind of item was a couple of years ago when I bought my first digital camera, and they were way too expensive. Not only is this a great deal, but this is the kind of interesting item that a lot of folks can get into. (Not too many Hot Deals for grandparents, but this is definitely one.)

Second, to all the fence sitters out there, I bought these for basically all my major Christmas gifts -- sight unseen -- based on the great reviews here in this forum, and I am 100% satisfied. It will be easy to update / add photos for the relatives later with CF cards, and this is much more practical than the alternatives. (We had been using Ofoto but it's become clear to us that no one ever manages to get around to ordering any prints, so while it's a neat idea, it just wasn't working for the family.)

Thanks again and if you're on the fence, order away, you won't be disappointed.

Does anyone know how well it handles higher resolution images? Like if I take higher res pics, and just drop the cf card in it, will handle it for me, or do I have to do that separately?

Yes you can pop any sized images in there but be forewarned. Anything over 640x480 native will take forever to load it. Simply copying it over or viewing it took me about 30 seconds (to view) and upwards of 1.5 minutes (to copy), each.

YOU GUYS ARE KILLING ME!
I ordered one even though my credit card already has way too much on it - I just hope my wife likes it - she tends to see through these kinds of gifts. Yeah, it's a cool gift, but I think the geek factor is way too high - she's gonna see right though it ;)

SOOO... I don't know anything about compactflash. From what I see, I need a compactflash card and writer... if I only wanna put like 50 pictures on the card, how many MB do I need? What's the cheapest writer out there? I really need your help on this one!

Looks like there's 646 left - hurry hurry hurry!

Yeah, don't you guys hate it when you give someone something with a high geek factor and they totally don't appreciate it? That happens to me all the time, in fact I kind of expect the friend I am giving one to to totally not understand it. She'll be like "um okay". I cannot afford to get her a CF and reader too so I am crossing my fingers she will do it on her own so she doesn't have to look at the same pictures recycled over and over

Radioactiveman,

I know how you feel. I started this thread and I have the same fear. I bought two. One for myself and one for my mother for Christmas. The geek factor is ok for me but how will my mother like it? I guess I'll find out in two weeks. I just received both of them in the mail yesterday. I really like them.

The screens are nice. But I have to admit, I was looking for slightly better brightness. Others have posted that these are active matrix screens. Personally, they remind me much more of the HPA screens, which, although active matrix, suffer somewhat when viewed at an angle.

Anyway, to get 50 pictures on a memory card doesn't require anything huge. You should only be putting 640 x 480 prints on the screen anyway and they are "usually" pretty small. My best guesstimate is that a 32 Meg card should be more than sufficient.

I used a 64 meg Mr. Flash CompactFlash card and it worked without any problems. The photos were in 1280 x 1024 and I definately saw the delay that others are mentioning when the screen has to downsize the image.

As for a CF reader, I have the same one that ehuffman refers to. It's a 5 in 1 reader from Newegg.com You can see it at:

5-in-1 reader (last item on page for $35.00)

I have it and thinks it's great. It handles CompactFlash (CF), SmartMedia (SM), Secure Digital (SD) and Multimedia Cards (MMC). In addition, it has 16meg Flash internal that you can access so long as you do not insert a SM card (they occupy the same device drive).

Hey guys, I need your help. I just received the frame and I'm having trouble loading pictures from my CF card to the frame. the manual said to:

1: hit menu
2: highlight copy
3: well, I can't even get to step 3 because when I hit ok on copy, I get this message that my product is not registered and to either go online to storybook.com and register or call them. well, I went to the website and it said it's closed, so I call and the rep cannot help.

Did I get the network version? how do I convert it to the non-networked version so I can use the frame.

TIA

You definitely got the network version. Have CompGeeks exchange them.

How do I remove the glare screen guys? Thanks.

prince, you got the networked verson, call the geeks to exchange it, or buy one of ours on eBay ;)

to remove screen:

look at bottom of frame. for two tabs
press the tabs, and just pull off the wooden frame.
pull it off from the bottom first.
you'll see the plastic now.
