In a friend's dad's car once got to like 140mph or so, in my own cars only around 110-115 since they were all beaters. Didn't bother me too much, it was on interstates that were nice and open, no traffic late at night.

I've been a passenger in an 03 Cavalier doing 98, it wasn't fun listening to the car shake and imagining what would happen if a wheel fell off or something equally catastrophic.

Exactly. It's a crappy American four-banger, and I doubt it was intended to go anywhere near that fast. I don't think I'll ever be taking over 65 again, just for the fear of it coming apart at the seams.

I hit 160mph in an Aston Martin Vanquish that my dad was looking at. The sales director offered me a test drive of my own, in order to incur more brownie points with my dad to encourage a sale. I've been up to 140-150 in other cars.. TT Supra, E55 AMG to name a few... but this simply blew them away in terms of sheer, brute power; engine sound; road feel; and the number of stares you get in an Aston FAR FAR FAR outweighs what you'd get in anything else. The roadways of choice were the 118 and 405 freeways in So Cal at 2pm on a weekday... which were surprisingly empty and the few cars there were tooling along at 90 already. The sales director said with a smile, "feel free to go as fast as you like; you pay your own tickets" and so, I jumped on it! At 160 the car was still pulling like a bloodthirsty beast but my courage ran out :(

That was three years ago... still the best automotive story of my life. Sadly my dad declined to purchase that car... I want to smack him. He's an old fart... he needed more creature comforts than the Aston could offer. But I had my day in the sun that day.

My car: 110mph in my 89 Accord on a long straight downhill in the boonies. Following my friend in his new mustang.
Friend's car: 130mph in my friends new Eagle Talon turbo on a long flat deserted straight.

I went 140mph in my Camaro Z-28 on I-75 once.. Totally open one evening. Though, when I passed a truck going my direction and it went by as fast as I normally go by trees, I decided to slow down quick.

35mph on a bicycle on a flat road with no hills. I could not support this speed for more than a quarter mile.

68mph on the same bicycle down a long steep hill. This speed scared me since the front wheel was vibrating.

70mph on a dirt/road bike on a backwoods gravel road attempting to clock my brother's speed on a 250cc motocross bike. This was just before he took a spill at a minimum of 60mph, slid 30 feet over the gravel while wearing those slick motocross pants and pads, brushed himself off, got back on the bike, and continued riding.

136mph on a Kawasaki Ninja 600cc motorcycle.

I did 155mph in 1970 Nova and thought the wheels and hood were going to fly off. That car was neither made to go that fast nor did it want to go that fast.

I imagine that 155 in my 2002 Z28 would be much more uneventful.

I did 110 in a 2004 Honda Accord. This was in rural Idaho/Utah where 110 actually felt slow and the exits were labeled Valley and Ranch for 30+ mile stretches at a time.

250km/h, a long time ago, in an old 200 Quattro, it reached that without any problems what so ever.

I've also driven an Audi 80 from 87 with a 1.8l carburetor engine at 220km/h on a straight open road, i never thought i'd ever get close to that speed but i did, the speedometer only goes as far as 220 so i don't know if i went beyond that.

176mph on GPS on a modified 2002 Kawasaki Ninja on a state highway.

EDIT: Oh, and didn't feel that strange or anything. Wasn't scared until after I did it and really thought about it. When you are going that fast, you don't have time to think. If you think you're dead...That's a hell of a gamble with a $9000 bike....lol

I think I got my '92 LeBaron Convertible up to 111 when I was 16. Never doing that again, car was shaking like mad and it took forever for it to go up 1mph.

Many many years ago I went 140 at about 2am on the interstate in the middle of town in my friends 1979 V8 Chevy Monza because he was too drunk to drive. It was a very stupid thing to do.

Much scarier was on a motorcycle I went about 95 at around 1am on a city street. This was also a bad idea.

Maxed out at 132 in my old 2006 Civic, on I87 towards the Bronx, NY.
Maxed out at 119 in my old 1996 Galant, same area.
Haven't passed 90 in my 07 Jetta...waiting to break her in first.

135 MPH in my Altima, definitely felt like it had a little more in it, but I was approaching a bend in the highway that state troopers like to hide behind. Let off and started to coast a little, when I started to brake I saw a state trooper driving really slow make a quick u-turn and clock me. He got me at 91 in a 70. Now I never exceed 85-90, and I only get to that speed if I'm on an empty highway.

People didn't know this?

My car reads a few percent high, my motorcycle reads a full 7% high.

Exactly.

Exactly both of you are morons, who will end up killing somebody innocent.

Race somebody on racetrack?

No one here has been "racing" someone at the time, and indeed in almost all cases it's been on an open, empty road, where they were endangering no one but themselves.

Your average cellphone talker is more dangerous on the road than someone who speeds when there's no traffic or curves around.

I've seen 140mph in a modded Mustang GT but I think speedo error probably really put me at around 125-130.

I had a Lotus Elise up to 120mph on public roads a little less than a year ago. It would have gone faster too.

The Mustang felt really light and not at all confidence inspiring. The Lotus was the complete opposite though. It felt completely stable with no hint of lift whatsoever.
