Where's all these cons who have the vapors when a confederate military person statue is torn down, "you are destroying history".

Turns out they were always completely full of shit. Unprincipled jackasses. That's why you don't see our resident dunderheads ever say anything negative about Republicans.

I believe the current line is trying to whatabout the whole situation with a claim that Obama spent millions in 2008 refurbishing the White House (ignoring that 1. Obama wasn't in office in 2008; 2. The work was instigated by Bush because the WH needed it; and 3. Congress appropriated the money), so that somehow makes this okay.

The Economist magazine is trying the reasonable thing. Talking to the other side. Except the other side is completely insane....

Its good that The Economist are having a swing... but its a complete miss. In my mind they are just serving as an echo chamber for memetic messages that are easily installed in folk with low critical thinking ability.

Maybe the only good thing from this piece is it being a concise summary of MAGA's thinking coming from one of the main players.

I kept thinking about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance during the video... does this make me a bad guy?

Surprising we haven't even reached 2026 yet and Trump is ranked among the top of the list; yeppers #1 he is #1 among the worse!

Recent scholarly rankings
The 2024 Presidential Greatness Project Expert Survey found that a group of 154 political scientists and presidential experts ranked Donald Trump last among all presidents, placing him at 45th. The survey was organized by two political scientists, Brandon Rottinghaus and Justin Vaughn.
Historian divisions were evident in the same survey. While most scholars ranked Trump in the bottom five, self-identified Republican and conservative experts still ranked him significantly lower than President Biden.
Other low rankings for Trump include a 2021 C-SPAN survey that placed him fourth lowest, and a 2018 Siena poll where he was ranked among the bottom three. These were his first rankings in those respective polls.

Lighten the fuck up Francis.

Also are you still claiming tearing down part of the east wing including reinforced concrete floors is just a “facade”?

It appears that they are tearing the entire east wing as such down. No big deal IMO. Its not like Presidents haven't ever changed things at the White House before... Take a deep breath it will be alright.

How many of those were done without proper approval?

Just the facade, right?

I was quoting what the linked article said. I also provided a link for the definition of a facade.

The east wing was built in 1902 and not a part of the original White House.

Basically the only "original" part of the WH thats left is the residence outer shell. The Truman era reconstruction had to hollow it out and rebuild from the inside out. The East Wing as we all know it was built in the 40s mostly to cover a bunker for FDR who if he was to need shelter during the war had to be schlepped over through a tunnel into the basement of the Treasury Building.

It is accurate that many presidents have made alterations to the WH both big and small. The larger changes all had at least informal assent from congress and the relevant historical commissions. Ripping down the East Wing to build a giant corruption party room is not comparable to anything that's happened before except for when the British burned the place down.
