Opera 10.6 Arrives With More Speed, New Malware Protection

If you check opera:config, there's a setting 'Use Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnails' which can be used to turn it back on.

I'm using Opera 9.63, 10.54, 10.60 beta. It looks good, haven't yet tried the Unite/web-server feature yet but the idea is pretty cool. And most likely would become popular in future. For ad-blocking I'm using privoxy (privoxy.org) with it and it works good.

Some issues:-

I tried to update opera 6 beta to opera 6 and the update-installation popped up a message about .Net Framework 4 update/installation on my vista system (by SYSTEM user) is not complete. So it couldn't upgrade it.

I thought maybe I can just disable the Microsoft .Net plugin thing in Opera just like I did in other browsers I use. So I went to Menu options, 'Preferences' etc and found only 'Quick Preferences'->'enable-plugins'. That seems like enable or disable all plugins. No easy fine control over plugins.
Googling led me to opera😛lugins which lists all plugins installed. I want to disable at least following plugins:-
Windows Presentation Foundation,
Google Updater,
Google Update,
Yahoo Application State Plugin,
iTunes Application Detector,
Google Earth Plugin,
Picasa

Found this knowledge base hack for single plugin disable hack:

It seems to be an ugly hack only designed for tech savy people. Where's the easy one for lazy people?

I recently traveled to another country and was using my laptop there. Tried Google and Yahoo on Opera and it kept showing me Canada specific results even though I use Opera in 'private mode' with personal data (cache, cookies, history etc) deleted. Firefox was behaving fine as it was showing that country specific google, yahoo page.

Hmm.. So after much time spent ignoring Opera, I finally caved in to check out what all the fuss was about.

Great time to really start eying the browser, 10.6 seems to be one of the best browsers out right now as far as base browser and software package is concerned.

A few minutes after tinkering with it and browsing a few webpages, I definitely like it.
In fact, I think it may displaces Chrome on my system as the go-to browser to load up a page real quick.
It isn't replacing my Firefox install just yet.

Critical shot against Opera at the moment - no LastPass support. LastPass Bookmarklets, hmm sweet, but no thanks - not enough to be used extensively. So it seems that Firefox will remain my browser of choice for secure browsing of websites to which I must submit information, be it credentials or forms.

But I think, while Firefox will remain my go-to "main session" browser, complete with a host of multiple tabs, I do think Opera may end up getting set as Default Browser, to quickly load up links and generally browse the net. But if I have to log into a site, it has to remain in Firefox I guess. But that could trim down the number of sites in my main Firefox session, and thus could make the memory usage more friendly and keep Firefox as an even more attractive browser.

More time will be needed before I make that decision, but at the least, I definitely think I'll be uninstalling Chrome. Nice browser for sure, but it's not really secure, and I've heard good things about Opera's security.

One of the upcoming trials for my Opera install?
Email. So far, I really really really like Thunderbird 3.1. First time I really made a serious effort to get into Thunderbird, and with the Lightning plugin and Google Calendar support it will be tough to compete against imho. If Opera's email package can rival what I am doing with Thunderbird right now, that might make it really easy to make Opera the default.

What will help with keeping Firefox as a browser for any site I use a login with, is that I have my Firefox install so insanely customized, I just enjoy it. It gets bogged down when keeping 50+ tabs open for days on end, and crashes randomly, so if I split that between two browsers, it might really work out well for me. 🙂
And the sites I really care about, as far as page customizations, I tend to have a username on said sites.

And I must add, FWIW, Opera looks really really nice on Windows 7.

OperaMail (M2) is not as full featured as Thunderbird. There is nothing like a calendar. The mail client by itself is quite good - ability to compose in tabs and incremental search being 2 features that put it ahead of Thunderbird (apart from being tightly integrated with the browser). Just setting your expectations so that you arent disappointed.

Hmm.. snip

Opera doesn't have real LastPass support but it does have it's own password manager called "Wand".

Chrome is pretty secure which it's tab sandboxing. Opera is probably secure because of it's small user base. Firefox, unfortunately, is probably the least secure of the three... at least only when taking vulnerability numbers into account and not how fast they are fixed.

Or swap over from LastPass to Keepass...which i'm pretty sure has an plugin that will convert the LastPass database into a Keepass database... i'm a big fan of Keepass as i can use it on any app that requires a username/password, instead of needing a plugin for my browser

Anyone knows the keyboard shortcut to open 'New Private Tab' in Opera? Right now I do 'Menu'->'Tabs and Windows'->'New Private Tab' to open it and that's a lot of distance to cover, i need a shortcut for it.

Hmm..

You know you can install multiple versions (firefox 3.6.3, 3.7a5pre, palemoon, 3.0.0.x, etc) of firefox and modify their desktop shortcuts to point to different profiles. This way you can run multiple versions/instances of firefox simultaneously and maybe each one customized for different tasks.

Quick check and seems there's a default ctrl+shift+n for New private window but you can easily create a New private page shortcut.
Menu -> Settings -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Shortcuts -> Keyboard Setup -> Edit -> Select Application -> Click New... -> Input your own shortcut, for example "n alt shift" and then click the Actions box and input the command as New private page. There you go.

Keepass can't be ran on phones, nor can it be used without a flash drive if on another system.
I haven't decided just how I want to go about the whole passwords issue

anyone else having issues with 10.6 not remembering links you have followed? you know how they change color if you have clicked on them. on these forums for example mine change to yellow if i have entered a thread and are blue if not. for some reason they keep resetting making it hard to remember posts ive already read. i haven't changed any settings and this didnt happen before

it used to happen back in the opera 8 or 9 days randomally as well

You can save a premade .ini file that will block ads similar to the subscription lists in adblock for Firefox. Alternatively you can build your own list by right clicking anywhere on a page and selecting block content and click on the ad to have ads from that provider blocked. This will save any ads you add to a .ini similar to the list I linked.

Also to enable noscripts except on trusted sites go to menu settings preferences. Advanced then uncheck Enable Javascript.

Then on sites you trust right click edit site preferences in the tab scripting select enable javascript and refresh the page.

Thx. The ini file worked great.

Something else that is kind of annoying me with Opera since I have been a long-time Firefox user.

Opera is now my default browser, but Firefox serves as my "trusted" browser.

The annoyance:
In Firefox, you can have a ton of tabs open, and the tab bar is "scrollable" is that a flick of the scroll wheel will change which section of all the open tabs is in view.
In Opera, there is no such thing. You can open the tab switch window, but so far it feels far slower. If you enable the Show Tabs button the tab bar, it keeps only some of the tabs in view, the rest can only be accessed by clicking the button and then selecting it.
And on the tab view, it doesn't stay in the same order.

I love seeing thumbnails of tabs, but right now all my open tabs are super tiny tabs and the thumbnails are worthless. Since I cannot scroll the bar and have the tabs stay somewhat larger, it feels so backward and against logic.
Apparently in Opera it is not very efficient to have 20+ tabs in a single window, and this is extremely annoying to me.

Thanks, created 't ctrl shift' for new private tab/page.

The new FF 4.0 beta looks very similar to opera. Opera indeed leads the way yet never gains marketshare lol.

Wow Opera is slick.

I have been trying out Firefox 4 beta for a week then Chrome Dev 6 & now Opera....

Chrome seems a bit smoother than Firefox....Opera seems even slicker. However I think because of add-ons though. I'm most likely to switch to Chrome than Opera....However I am still giving Firefox hope too.

Now to test Opera then Safari next week. So far Opera is awesome. The turbo mode is a must for laptop users connecting to slow hotspots.

opera has widgets, though they seem to suck. But most of my addon needs are met with opera, opera link for xmarks, adblock list for adblock. Fast dial built in, invented by opera i believe? Others i am not really missing.

I have found some issues with opera, flash menus over flash videos on espn have issues for instance. But nothing like i chromes case that pushed me back to FF yet...

ONe thing im missing is download bar addon, but managing.

Privacy issue : Do you guys know equivalent of firefox's 'Better Privacy' extension to manage Flash Cookie.

I think now all major browsers have Private Browsing mode, so when someone is browsing in Private Mode the browser shouldn't allow setting Flash Cookie or should automatically delete it on exit.

Going to Adobe site to manage your cookies is just wrong.

opera has private tabs, right click on a tab and you will see or go through the menu.

You can prob make a quick key to it, but i dont care to.
