Tab. Why would you use anything else unless you had like 12847 websites open?

Depends. When reading threads in ATOT, I use both, but I think I prefer new window because I can open a thread, read/post, then close and return to the other window with the threads listing.

Tab, unless I want to see the two pages side by side.

Side question: Is there a way to open a link in a new tab without right clicking it and selecting 'open in new tab'? (Firefox)

I use the Add-on called "Tab Mix Plus" and it has an option to make "Open links in a new tab" the default action for clicking a hyperlink that would otherwise open a new window.

Window.

I prefer to view as much at a time on a page as possible and having the tab bar at the top cuts into what I can see.

I have that selected and links do open in a new tab, but that tab is on top. When I right click and choose 'open in new tab' it keeps the current tab on top and opens the new tab behind. This is useful for opening a bunch of picture links or anything that you expect will be slow to load.
